I had my blood drawn today. The vacutainer couldn’t “suck” my blood out. They moved the needle around and in and out while I started to sweat and turned white until I told them I was going to pass out. Don’t watch when they draw your blood 😰

For your safety, the person was not in your vein if the blood wasn’t flowing. Don’t let them “fish” for the vein, it’s not always going to happen but depending on what vein they are using they could hit a nerve and cause damage. You can always request a new person, if the first person is not get it.

I grew up getting blood work as a sickly child and love to see the needle go in. It helps me prepare myself. It does hurt when they fish around but I understand that im a very hard poke and my veins literally roll and disappear so I always tell them to do whatever they can and what they're comfortable with. All my nurses love me haha. The easiest place to get my blood is actually on my hands. Some nurses hate to try it but I've never had a problem there. Though it is a smaller area to work with.

Having a rare genetic condition ive had this happen to me a lot. Back in school my AP psychology teacher was going around with the myth that your blood was blue before it was oxygenated, needless to say we had a huge pissing contenst where she tried to belittle me for being younger. Her, not knowing how many vacuseal containers ive filled in my life, was dumbfounded that she was indeed incorrect

I learned the hard way.. if you're dehydrated your blood will be really thick and might not flow through the needle quickly. It will take A LOT longer to fill the tubes so drink plenty of fluids before getting bloodwork done 💦

This is the big difference between venipuncture/starting an IV as a nurse vs as a provider. The nurse will find a normal vein, wear gloves, and you won’t get an infection. The provider finds the big elbow crease pipe, no gloves it, and infects the client with staph because coincidentally they also didn’t wash their hands

OMG I had a nurse tell me I must have high blood pressure because my blood came out that fast and that I really need to have it checked out. I had just had my blood pressure taken and it wasn't high. I've always been terrified I'm going to just silently stroke out since that day and monitor my normal blood pressure constantly. What a b. I've been crazy paranoid for 10 years. I also had another nurse at the same obgyn/midwife practice tell me, that my blood was really thick and I needed to drink more water. This was immediately after she told me how easy it was to find my vein because I must stay pretty hydrated. She like took it back. I asked my midwife about what she had said and she just blew off my question like the nurse did not just say that to me.

For the second one, you might have eaten something heavy or fatty earlier. You probably were hydrated, but fats get absorbed into the blood and can make it harder to draw blood

This video jogged an old memory from when I was in the USN during Vietnam. I had to undergo surgery and the day before they wanted to draw blood. Simple right? Not for the USN! The young corpsman poked and poked my left arm over 8 times and collapsed my veins. THEN he went to the right arm and on the seventh stick I yelled "STOP!" He'd collapsed those veins. I screamed at him "WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Haven't you ever done this before??" His answer "Well not on a human, I've done oranges though@" OH MY GOD Help!!!
