Can't believe this only has 5K views.. I have been searching for this topic and this video is the most comprehensive with great presentation by far. Learned so much and thanks for sharing such detailed and valuable information. But I still have a problem so I would like to ask a few things if you don't mind. Problem is when my car (2007 Corolla) is jacked up, the wheel spins well with parking brake off, and they lock wells with parking brake on. But the parking brake doesn't work while driving. The car wouldn't stop and it will just roll with only tiny hesitation. Checked all parts, cleaned, checked cylinders/cables/joints/pivot points, no rust/crack, checked drum diameter, and replaced front (leading) shoes as they were 1mm. Back (trailing) shoes were 3mm so didn't replace. Nothing seems to help. Also, adjusted star wheel and cable tension, but nothing helped. You mentioned about the chamfer but upon checking the brand new drum for my car, they don't seem to have any chamfer. And as you mentioned in the vid, I bought a drum brake caliper and the diameter seems perfect without any chamfer. A couple of things I want to point out 1) If I force hard to turn the wheels with my hands while parking brake engaged (while jacked up), I could actually spin them a bit which I suspect it shouldn't happen. So I suspect the shoes are not biting the drum with enough force. 2) The cable tension was loose before (10 clicks) so I adjusted to 6-7 clicks. At some point it felt a bit loose again, but now I can't adjust anymore under 7 clicks as the adjusting nut is maxed out. I was able to adjust it much tighter before (even up to 3 clicks). The cables are working fine. I am quite desperate to find the cause and any advice would be much appreciated. I hope you earn way more subs and views that you truly deserve.

Yeah me too. I pour my heart and soul into my videos and it's maddening to not have it found in the sea of youtube videos out there. Maybe you can help me with this and share out my channel on your social network and they can share out on theirs. Thanks in advance. Some of the newer vehicles parking brakes suck even when everything is ok. That being said there are some things to check. You always change both shoes when changing your brakes. Check your setup as an incorrect placement of the drum brake parts could be causing issues. Make sure your drum diameter is only 1mm bigger than the diameter over the shoes (use a drum brake caliper). You need that clearance so your brakes wont rub but you don't want them too far away either. Disassemble the star wheel adjuster and wire wheel the threads clean and lube the threads with never seize. Make sure you don't mix up the left and right adjusters as they have opposite thread directions. Make sure all 3 brake cables are free to move. Find the adjuster on the cable and adjust so the parking brake lever/pedal is tight at 2/3rds of the overall movement. Make sure you do a bedding of new brake parts to match the contour of the drum and the shoe linings. Check that both sides are evenly braking, one side might not be grabbing as hard due to a cable or poor adjustment. Check the caliper pivot for the parking brake, they can seize up and not provide all the power to the brakes ( depending on the system). Do a couple hard brakes in reverse to allow the adjuster to self adjust if it needs it. If re using shoes, lightly sand lining and drum surface to remove glazing. I also change all springs when I change shoes, cheap insurance for $15. Hope you can figure this out, good luck and thanks for supporting my channel. Cheers!

I did drum brakes for the first time about 40,000 miles ago, and just inspected them. All is good. If you do need to replace shoes, you have to also replace the little springs and doodads too. That's called a harware kit. BUT: a regular kit doesn't include everything, you can also get the self-adjuster replacement kit as well. It's cheap, and easier than cleaning up and re-lubing the old one.

Great information! I just recently had my drum brakes replaced. At first, they couldn’t get the drum off on the right side. The mechanic said that they were going to have to bang on it until it came off, and in the process, could do more damage to the rear and could potentially cost up to $800 in repairs. They eventually were able to get it off, and put the new shoes and drum on. Shortly after getting them replaced, the brake started squeaking. I took it back the next day and they told me it was normal for drum brakes and the noise would eventually go away. They said this without looking at it and just sent me in my way. I kept driving it and the noise got worse and the brake started squeaking even when I wasn’t pressing on the brake. I took it back and they said something about the part they needed was on back order from the dealer and had to adjust a new part they put on. When I left the shop, the squeaking stopped, but it began squeaking shortly after. So now I’m driving around with a squeaky brake again and I don’t know what to do. I drive Lyft/Uber and haven’t been on the road because they squeaking is so loud and unbearable, which means I’m not making any money. What should I do?
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 6 ай бұрын
Sounds like you may have a poorly adjusted star wheel adjuster and maybe the brakes are sticking on. Do you smell a burning metal smell? Do you have grabbing of the brakes with light brake pressure? The banging to get off is usually fixed by removing the rubber plug on the back and loosening the shoes out from the groove in the drum. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, I might suggest going to another mechanic. Good luck!
@deannawilson3421
@deannawilson3421 6 ай бұрын
I haven’t noticed a smell. I mostly keep the windows up because the noise is so loud. When I first start driving, the noise is t present, but when I brake a few times then the noise comes back. It has progressively gotten louder with a soft touch of the brake. Is the star wheel adjuster something that can be fixed or are my brakes doomed? 😢
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 6 ай бұрын
Hard to say without seeing it but if the brakes are just too tight, they can be adjusted. If something is wrong like a broken or misplaced spring, then it needs to be changed. Like I said, it's hard to know for sure.
@deannawilson3421
@deannawilson3421 6 ай бұрын
@@wayofthewrench Okay, I see. I just realized right now that my emergency brake is loose. It goes up without any tension or pressing the release button. It stays up when placed up and goes down. But it’s very loose. Does that also have to do with the Star wheel adjuster? I wouldn’t mind adjusting what I needed to if it’s not too bad of a fix. The main reason why I took it to the shop is because I couldn’t get the drum off by myself. I’m just hoping it’s not too bad because I need my car for work 😓
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 6 ай бұрын
That's a high possibility that it is part of the issue. You might have a seized brake cable that won't return or some hardware has come loose causing the parking brake to be malfunctioning. Hard to tell through messages. It depends on how skilled you are with drum brakes. If you aren't very skilled, then I would highly recommend you take it to another shop. Drum brakes can be very tricky and putting the part in the wrong way can cause issues, which have huge consequences if your car can't stop. I wish I could help you more but keep me posted Deanna. Good luck!

Thanks so much for this video! I do not like guessing at adjusting drum brakes, so I ordered a brake resetting gauge. I have 3 cars with drum brakes. Subscribed! While I'm at it, I have a question: I want to change a wheel cylinder that looks wet inside, it's rusted to a brake line which is rusted to a flex hose (which is probably rusted to the next brake line). When I do this, do I need to replace any springs, etc? (I would replace the brake line, flex hose, etc.) 150k miles on the shoes, 4mm of thickness. Quite old. Let me know if you need more details. That's how they work probably because they can't charge ( or can't charge much for checking) your drum brakes. For people with some time who want to inspect their drum brakes before you have problems, then it's a good idea. Your time is free, theirs is not. Sometimes the shoes can wear into a groove which makes it tougher and more time consuming but still doable. Hope that helps. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!

That's expensive yet still cheap, most shops around here are 150-200 an hour nowadays.

Stuck lug nuts are the worst! I just dealt with one on a steel rim and had to cut the lug nut in half as much as I could and then hammer and chisel it until it split and fell off. Then Zi had to install a new stud. So maybe that can help you out. Good luck!

So what if you need to bleed your brakes. Where's the bleeder screw ? I didn't see one
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 9 ай бұрын
All calipers ( disc) and wheel cylinders (drum ) will have a bleeder screw. They are usually near the top and usually have a rubber cap on them. I need to make a how to bleed brakes video, it's only list to do. Thanks for the watch and keep an eye out for a future video on bleeding brakes. Cheers!

I think you said the vehicle is a 1991 but it’s more likely an 01. Not really important but just wanted to point that out 😊
