I totally agree with @Dr. Rahman here whose comment I am plagiarizing - “ Good productive research but it’s far from being acceptable as theory that muscles don’t directly pull the wings but instead they change the exoskeleton! The fly wings are perhaps driven by pneumatic throbbing. That's why distortion in the thorax takes place.

Exactly my opinion. One cannot make a hypothesis into real theory with just one observation. Can they make a small change in exoskeleton to produce such big muscles movements into flight ? Let’s wait and watch.

Make sure you go collect a bunch of cicadas. You could make them into cheap drones and do studies. They’re big enough you should be able to recognize the inside and get them to fly, even if you have to build some custom mechanics. You can try flies after you get this perfected. 😂
