Today, glasses help millions of people with poor vision be able to see clearly. But how? Andrew Bastawrous and Clare Gilbert help unravel the answer by explaining refraction - the ability of a transparent medium, like glass, water, or the eye, to change the direction of light passing through it.
Lesson by Andrew Bastawrous and Clare Gilbert, animation by Andrew Foerster.

I have myopia and have glasses but only like to use them in class or to watch a movie. But on the odd occasion that I forget to take them off after class and go outside with them on, I get this crazy moment where I realize how detailed the world really is, like HOLY COW I can see individual leaves on a tree. WHOA! Usually when I have these moments my friends think I've gone mad cuz I started examine random objects like they contain the secrets to the universe XD

Has anyone been asked "can you still see things, without glasses/contacts?" that is they're asking it as if without seeing aid we're completely blind? I have had to a few times explain that poor eyesight doesn't equal blind, but rather blurry vision.
@DecoyBlackMage
@DecoyBlackMage 8 жыл бұрын
+ArtisticAsian1014 At the same time, being blind does not equal a person being unable to see anything at all, complete blindness is overall rare. Though those who do have pretty negative stats on their vision without glasses can be labled as blind to an extent if I recall correctly. Then we have double vision (( I suffer from this at times, nerve damage )) which can require prisms to correct if permanent or until your brain creates a new auto correct which could take 3-8 months. So to an extent yes really poor eyesight can label you as blind from a medical standpoint anyways.
@ArtisticAsian1014
@ArtisticAsian1014 8 жыл бұрын
DecoyBlackMage Interesting. I've heard of double vision but not much on it. I'm assuming the nerve your talking about is the optic nerve? You do have a point though; extremely poor vision can be labeled as blind to an extent. I guess in my case, I just don't like how the people who have asked me in the past (tone and wording of sentence).
@DecoyBlackMage
@DecoyBlackMage 8 жыл бұрын
ArtisticAsian1014 Yes and no, I suffer from MS so yes to an extent the optic nerve can be damaged. But in my case I have had scars forming in my cerebellum a couple of times, which has damaged my brains ability to put images together, the brain requires time to create a new setup but generally double vision is not permanent. Eye damage is one thing but we can also gain vision problems if damage happens to the optic nerve or cerebellum, and the results can be quite weird at times.

I'm not really blind. I'm almost completely blind though. In my left eye. It's basically useless, and sometimes it just wonders off. Looking at something random. My right eye is looking straight ahead, when my left eye is looking somewhere to the left, right, up at, down, whatever. Some think I'm cross eyed. But are my eyes crossed? No! They're just looking in different directions..

Just got my glasses a few months ago. I can still remember way back then, i thought that the world was seen that way. I thought it's normal to not clearly see objects beyond 5 meters from me. But when i learned about glasses and eventually had one, i can still remember how teary my eyes were as i was then able to clearly see every object and the leaves of the tree and the people passing by. It was my fist time to appreciate how beautiful the world where you can see even the very detail of an object. Right now, i still have it as i write this, and i am grateful as it really helped me in various ways. (Sorry for my English) Cheers to all who has myopia and astigmatism. ♥️

I'm super near sighted. When I was young I was fascinated by nature photography because of the intense detail that I thought could only be picked up by cameras. When I finally got my glasses, I was near tears because I realized that that was what the world was made up of all around me. I didn't realize that other people saw trees that way all the time and I drew them over and over again for a while. Before glasses, it was silhouettes that I loved. After, it was detail. PS: Does anyone else take their glasses off to eat?

I was supposed to wear glasses around the age of 12, after a year or so I just eventually refused to wear them. Now 26, still don't wear glasses, can drive just fine and last time I went to the eyedoctor my eyesight has improved. Always nice when everyone tells you you need x only to have it turn out you really don't.

The first time I put on my glasses a year ago (at the time), I was like" 'GASP' THERE ARE LEAVES, I SEE DETAILS ON CLOUDS, EVERYTHING LOOKS SO MUCH COOLER!!", until I brought them to school, and I felt so awkward, knowing that I just came to school with FREAKING GLASSES. I got over it :). Oh and I can still see things far away, it's not a bad myopia. I can go to water parks, going to the beach, riding a roller coaster, anything you're not supposed to bring with you.

And of course, many thanks to those people who invented contacts, being short-sighted, I am wearing them for 4 years already, and they changed my life completely!) I remember when at school, classmates used to mock me because of spectacles, calling me nerd and blind) but now when I am wearing contacts, people don't even know that I have eyesight problems)

I've been wondering lately, why is this "bad eyesight condition" so common? I'm short-sighted (myopic) and so is my mom, while my step dad is long-sighted (hyperopic). Nearly all my friends use glasses, I'd say 80% of them, either all the time or just when they need to. And let's not even mention the rest of my family! How did this gene grow into humanity so strongly? Is it even a gene or what happened?

When I was really young like 3-7 I had pretty good vision but then as my eye grew my eyes were shaped kind of like a rugby ball so I had to get glasses because I was short sighted. I stopped wearing my glasses because I thought I didn't need them and then next time I went to the optician at 11 my right eye was still short sighted and my left eye was long sighted. They told me I should wear my glasses more often because it could help my vision. So even if you don't feel like you need your glasses on please just wear your glasses once you get them often because it can really help.

I was so excited when I saw the video and realised that it actually explains what astigmatism is. As a shackled prisoner of this disorder, (way too dramatic, yes) I've had to explain what it is (read : explain how to pronounce it ) , and describe what it "feels" like a countless number of times. This video is probably what I'm gonna show every curious acquaintance from now on! Thank you, Ted-Ed. P.S : Any fellow astigmatism-affected folks out here? Relatable?

do animals experience same eye problems as humans do ? why so many people in the world, like 400 million, have bad vision ? why our eyes are so prone to work so bad , while we don't have any deterioration problems with our other senses ? how can you explain bad vision with evolution ? Aren't genes that cause bad vision suppose to disappear and if so why it's still so prevalent ? I wish you could answer these questions too .
@thefinnbomb8321

@excessvoltage

@114757710086722053084 but they certainly diminish in number. what I aimed to understand is why eye problems are more common than say, nerve problems that effect touch or nasal problems that greatly reduces your ability to smell. Why our eyes more prone to detoriate 'compared' to our other senses
@excessvoltage
@excessvoltage 7 жыл бұрын
just found out the answer to this question. the cells in our eyes never regenerate or replicate, contrary to other cells in our bodies. Another example are the cells in our ears which aid hearing. So as we grow older we lose our hearing and vision the most because the cells there start to die and new ones can not be produced.

I got my glasses almost 2 years ago and I had very minor myopia back then but recently got diagnosed with astigmatism and the situation of my eyes are getting worse and I've been kinda stressed about it given the fact that the eye condition gets worse day by day. Times like this I feel like why me? No other kids in my class wears glasses and can see the board perfectly even if sitting in the last bench but I can't see it clearly even when I'm not in the last bench. So during a random eye checkup I couldn't see anything after the first big 🔠. I directly went from no glasses to glasses with -2 power. And god I couldn't believe that how was I able to see so much details. And now after 4 Years I have -5 as my number. Blind AF without glasses like I cannot even see read a book kept 25 cm away. Thank God I have glasses now otherwise life would be very difficult.

...Not including using binoculars, obs, just glasses LOL. Internet says the best recorded human eyesight is 20/10 (at 20ft you can clearly see what a person with 20/20 vision can clearly see at 10ft) - but Internet didn't say if that person was wearing glasses or not.
