How Do HEX Color Codes Work? (in 60 seconds)

You may have seen color codes like #5BC0EB and #FFFFFF around. These numbers convey a color to a computer but can be read by humans too.

I love how straight to the point this is, It even explains stuff I already knew about hexadecimal but managed to not drag it on as to be boring and overly long winded. Even though the only part I needed clarification on was which order did the colors corresond to the hex bits but it is such a short video that skipping through it is unnessecary. Love it!

Thanks I did not know that the hexadecimal values are based on 16 and that that's how each pixel calculates what color to display on the screen out of the colors red, green and blue and also how the umbers go from 1 to F with F representing 15. Like 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A=10 B=11 C =12 D=13 E=14 F=15. Cheers again!

When working with numbers, it's more efficient to go backwards, as we use "arabic numerals" which were introduced by indians. Arabs read from right to left, so their way of seeing numbers is more efficient. In # AB CD EF A has the position 5 (start counting from 0), F has the position 0. The reason why E is 16^0 is because it's the first number in the red group. 255 (dec) = (2 * 10^2) + (5 * 10^1) + (5 * 10^0) EF (Hex) = (E * 16^1) + (F * 16^0), where E is a constant for 14 F is a constant for 15.

Ignore the exponent and placement. Think of them all as two-digit numbers. In decimal we have 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9, and to go higher we start over to 0, and put a 1 next to it, to get 10. Hexadecimal does the same thing, but adds A-F, so the letter "F" = 15, and in hexadecimal "10" = 16, and "FF" = 255. It's just like counting, but with more number symbols. The reason we use this system of 0-255, instead of 0-100 or something, is because modern computer standards break up binary (1s and 0s) into sets of 8 bits, so 00000000 is 0, and 11111111 is 255. To represent 1 "byte", computer programmers often use two sets of hexadecimals, because 00 to FF represents all possibilities in 8 bit numbers.

F is the biggest digit in hex, like 9 is the biggest digit in our numbering system. So the biggest 2-digit number in hex must be FF. That in our numbering system (decimal or denary) is 255, so there are 256 options. It's just the way the cookie crumbles, I guess :^)

RGB is an additive process, meaning all the colors add to make white. Paint is subtractive, which means they would add up to create black. So I assume it wouldn't work. Also, hex codes are simply a way to tell pixels what to do so it may not be all that useful with paint even if it was possible.

thats exactly what is used 255 is represented as 11111111 in binary (what a computer uses) hex lets us group 4 binary letters into 1 hex letter to make it easier for us to understand and usee. 1111 is 15 or F so 255 is represented as FF (2 sets of 1s 4 time each)
