Thanks for this insight into how things work in the US. I live in Germany and have found that there are some variations. There are lots of coops, municipal galleries or non profits who have open calls for local artists. OK, perhaps these are not the ones to take you to the Venice Biennale but they can get you started and are also good for networking. It would be interesting to bring people from other countries to bring in different perspectives -since I have a feeling your audience is also quite international. This was an excellent look behind the scenes to understand what options are available and what tips and tricks might work. Will definitely give them a try.

Thank you so much for your valuable insights 🙏 I actually went for it & had my first solo show last year. It was not a commercial gallery, but an incredible space with a huge community engagement. I loved organising it all by myself & it lifted my confidence in giving myself opportunities instead of waiting for them. It's empowering ☺️🙏💫

Imagine my delight putting on an Art Prof video while I eat breakfast and seeing my own comment on the screen! Great advice in this video, I’ve been considering working toward a gallery show one day, and this gave me a lot to think about in terms of what goals to have going into it.

I've been painting, teaching and selling my work for 40 years so I'm in the final segment of my career and life. In all that time I've exhibited in every sort of gallery from bottom to top and had a lot of small successes but have never had a solo show apart from those I curated myself in my own studio. Several things have happened to give me extra challenges at this already challenging stage of my life. We moved to another county which meant two studio changes. Covid came along and I started painting abstracts. I may never bother with a gallery again but set up my website for selling online.

Fantastic video! I used to be part of a gallery co-op for 6 years and it was a very mixed experience. I was also in a local art gallery for 4 years and loved the idea of it but did not get the sales and engagement I thought I would...probably me. Thinking this time I will try the online store thing. TFS!!

I once emailed a gallery owner my random images that I was thinking of painting and was totally ignored. We had met in person and I thought she really liked me! People are really busy, so I'm not offended at all. Making quality friendships is so undervalued in all areas of life, including landing any good job. Don't ask, give.

Yeah, likely the gallery owner was awash with emails, it's a high pressure, communication-intense job! Even if a gallerist does like you, sometimes you have to follow up. -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist

This is mental. It's been proven that 5 galleries respond positively to every 100 galleries you contact through email. You have to research the gallery to see what they represent and if it matches your style demographic and price. Then form a list.

I'm a member of a local art group who has as one of their missions to give scholarships to local college students. The school also sponsors non-juried shows of whatever our group has been doing (probably as a thank-you). I never would have anything in any gallery if it wasn't like this! The students hung the show, and they did a wonderful job presenting both 2D and 3D (mostly books, like my three pieces) works. It's still kind of scary to get your work out in the public like that, even if all I had to do was show up with my art (not even an entry fee).

I'm in the Boston area and have shown at some local some local and regional galleries and would like to approached the NYC galleries but it seems so daunting. Is it possible to send a letter asking for an interview just as an introduction but not to show work? Ed

Most galleries really really don’t like it when you try to contact them as an artist, or send them anything that is unsolicited. Which, of course makes it feel impossible to break into the scene. I would recommend doing some major research on galleries and try to really target one that is a good fit for what you do. Most of the reason why a lot of artists have trouble with galleries is that they haven’t done the research and are sending their stuff out to tons of galleries, without knowing what the galleries are really about.-Prof Lieu

I’m an artist in Bergen, Norway, and have not been able to get any type of exhibitions or anything. I’ve worked on my art since 2006, but I am clueless as to how to get interest in my work. I often post on Instagram and Facebook Pages but that’s it.

I’m so grateful for your videos, they are so informative & helpful! I truly appreciate you guys! I am wondering if you’re looking to do an exhibit do all your pieces need to be the same size & also have the same color palette in order for them to be considered as cohesive?
@artprof2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching!! To answer your question-- your pieces absolutely don't need to be the same size, as long as they are formatted similarly! For example, making sure the frames don't clash, consistent labeling, etc - Mia, Art Prof Staff

@@artprof thank you so much for your response! Should the color palette be all the same colors in each painting?

I think rather than galleries, there should be outdoor art camps which can increase sales, improve connections between artists and people

I have tried everything, going to openings to galleries I liked for years, asking friends who would get so offended... it’s an incredibly pretentious really non accessible and non progressive way to promote art and artists... the opposite of inclusivity, accessibility and equity!

What percentage go to galler owner ?
@bluewren652 жыл бұрын
It depends on the gallery. If you are lucky, then 30%. In Australia 50% to 60% to the gallery is the norm. You basically decide on how much you want to get paid, then add that 50% or so and then decide whether or not your work is likely to sell at that retail price. If you have a gallerist who is really behind your work they can often advise you about how much they think their patrons are likely to pay for your work. If you have had other shows and sold work before then galleries are more likely to be interested in your work and you are likely to sell for more. Don't ever sell yourself short though. Putting too low a price on your work undervalues the work and sometimes will put off buyers ie if it's too cheap they think it's probably not all that good.
@artprof2 жыл бұрын
Typically it's 50% for commercial spaces, and 30% when you're working with institutions or organizations. -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
