At least in my case nothing could be further from the truth. I started at $53k when I emigrated to the US at age 36. I only cracked $100k for 3 years during the intervening years and my Wife made $25 to 30k. During that time I built two fast airplanes and flew all over the country in them and Wife had a horse. Not a cheap hobbies! I also doubled the size of our house. The difference was we saved for everything and paid with cash and did it all with our own bare hands. My cars have never seen the inside of a mechanic's shop either. All during this time I was very content and didn't feel I wanted for anything. Ken is wrong on this issue. He trashes the FIRE movement often, and what I have found is that the type of people to trash it, are the type of people who cant help but be a little jealous. And it makes sense, because it goes back to the old saying "misery loves company". I have found that people get really upset when a normal middle class person ends up doing so well, that they can stop working or quit their crappy job and start doing something that is a "fun job". Even though the person who gets jealous usually makes plenty of money, but has a bad habit of trying to buy happiness with "stuff", they want everyone to do that. A person who achieves FIRE did it on their own, and isnt living off the system, so why would people be annoyed at them. Ken has shown many times on this show that he wants people grinding away at a 9-5 until they are old and brittle, and then retire to enjoy possibly 10 years before they kick the bucket.
@alecweibel593511 ай бұрын
Well, A) Dave is against it, so no one on the team will dare speak up otherwise. Heck, Dave even says he wants to “help you retire with dignity”, not be financially independent from the current capital structure. B) You’re definitely right, though. People do get upset. Especially capital owners (business owners) get upset. They don’t think anyone who isn’t also a capital owner deserves to be wealthy. They need your labor to produce a return on the capital they’ve deployed in their business. Look how upset they are at the “labor shortages” (I say in quotes) that are still so prevalent. And, yes, I say all of this knowing if you own stocks, you’re technically a capital owner.

@@alecweibel5935 , Its quite a phenomena for sure! Im frugal too. In my youth probably to my own detriment. What ive learned about myself is i hate spending money. But. If im accomplishing all of my financial goals. And im able to buy that self indulgent thing. Even if its for show. What really am i harming? That said... i do follow up with the question of if its for show or foma or me? And theres got to be a reasonably high percentage of me in there. People don't care about your nice car. Your nice house. Your cool toy. So you might think your buying attention. But the reality is other people care a tiny tiny fraction that you think they do. Your McLaren you bought i drove by the other day. Yeah. It was cool to see it. But i don't care whose in it. And i won't care one bit when i see it again. But this isn't to say buying things is bad. Another test i use for myself is... will buying or not buying help with my relationships? While sure materialism is bad.. most social events require some kinda skill and some kinda equipment. If buying the equipment makes maintaining relationships easier & it doesn't hurt my goals then ill buy it. For instance. Maybe i have a goal to start hosting get togethers at my house. Well... a grill might be one tool to help maintain those connections. I mean theres other nuances to this but... You can buy Chargill for $200. Or you can buy a traeger for the price of a small house. Both accomplish the goal. But one is an indulgence arguably. One is "look at me!". So maybe the chargrill is good enough. If your a master griller maybe not. But thats not my point.

All my friends make relatively the same HHI, some of them get money gifts from parents and what not but we all fall in the same income categories. We have a friend that lives in a small condo and one with a million dollar house, the rest of us are in modest houses, or renting. The ones with the million dollar house buy new cars, expensive furniture, expensive everything. I have no idea how they afford it as they make no more than 30% more than us MAX and yet spend 300% more than us. My guess is family gifts and extremely over leveraged with financing.

Her car maybe feels new if she compares it to my Saab from 1999, the color is rust (if anyone wants to know).

Do whatever you have to do to retire early. With dignity. Not everyone can work in a heated/air conditioned studio.

It is simply. Buy things that are quality made that last for a decade. Buy things like Apple computers, Toyota cars, Barbour jackets and so on. And above all else do not develop a shopping lifestyle.

She's on the right track then. Studies do not support the idea that marriage and children are good for a woman's emotional or physical health.

Everyone borrowing wealth to be produced in the future is contributing to the higher costs in their present. Imagine if the USD supply did not increase since 1971. How much value would $1 have today?

So many times of these zoomers and young millennials are so worried about what other people do and accept. Even the fire movement the fall into. I blame social media.

32 and wants to retire at 50. I would ask if she married, has kids and if she's actually being realistic about such goals. For he and her along this may be a realistic option but life changes if you want other things in life.

She can still do that with a family. It really just depends on motivation

She has insecurity issues. No way you live for other people at 32 years old. The mind has matured by that time.
