When I recorded that Bosmina pooping, I thought it was funny. But I laughed out loud when our producer Matt changed the soundtrack right at that moment, now I think it's hilarious! :D Just a little note, we don't have microbes pooping footage with our new microscope. They kinda get stage fright and it's a bit challenging to record them pooping, these clips were recorded over the past couple of months. - James

That's hilarious. It's interesting to me how funny humans find poop, pee, burping, farting, vomiting. It's as if we use humor to mitigate the discomfort or disgust of these actions. Gotta love it.
@theworldoflivvy31504 жыл бұрын
Hey, are bosminas related to water fleas? The bosmina fella kinda reminded me of some water fleas I found in the pond by my house. I thought they were cool because if the light hit them right, you could see their little hearts beating through their bodies. I still can't tell if they only have one eye or if they have two... (Edit: Never mind the water fleas question... I guess bosminas are a species of water flea? Cool. Wonder if they're what I have.) hey and this is a weird request but Would it be possible to fit one of those egg sacks pond snails lay under a microscope? I'd love to see what they look like up close as they develop. I've been raising a few pond snails lately. -(Mostly because they're easier to care for than shrimp...)- I didn't realize how tiny the newborn snails were! Honestly, I thought they were just dead eggs floating on the water until they kept attaching to the side of the bowl on their own. The newborn snails couldn't have been any bigger than some of those water fleas! Baah, I wish I had a microscope. Leeches, water fleas, snails, sideswimmers, damselfly larva, swimming beetles, caddisfly larva... They're all cool. But unless I find some water mites I'm running out of things to see. Well, things that are visible, anyway.

i believe they just upgraded to an exremely expensive new microscope, but it's still light based microscopy. there are other forms of microscopes that use much higher frequencies like xrays instead of visible light to get much higher resolution. but these forms of microscopy are usually used for imaging single proteins, or something of that nature. but for real color light microscopy, i believe they're currently using the best of the best.

On Saturday, during a state-wide Snapshot Wisconsin water-sampling project, I spotted a tiny leech emerging from a tiny snail's shell. the snail was perhaps three millimeters across and the leech was obviously about the size of a thread. Some of your observations are just outside of the range of what's visible to my naked eye, and I was wondering if you are ever able to see things like this? I love seeing the different sizes of leech in my pond and in my home aquarium pond, where I have three large leeches and an unknown number of tiny guys. I was initially worried about being able to feed them, until I sorted out that only one of them specializes in mammal blood, and the others are capable of living on snail blood, or squished crustacean pulp.
