Which pickup pattern do you use most often?

Honestly you nailed it in the video with the lobar pattern. Super versatile in how it handles sound especially for video production. Id say that and the cardioid patterns are my most used.

Question .... When is Deity going to offer replacement parts on your website .... Yellow coil cables, foam windscreens for lav mics and antennas for Deity Connect?

I don’t even own a decent mic yet but this channel makes me love your brand. Someone at DEITY is a marketing genius. These videos are dope af and the fact that they’re not brand-centric elevates my respect for Deity. How do I get a free mic for my first documentary? 👀

I love your videos. They are so helpful. Could you do a video on how to place a flat lav under someone's clothing - like a countryman EMW or a Rode Lavalier II? I know you have covered round lavs, and that's great, but it doesn't seem to work with those flat, front facing lav mics.

#mailbag When shooting an ECU, mere inches from the actor, is there a method for mitigating camera noise by either dampening, shielding, absorbing, muffling or isolating the camera’s fan? Are any of those the correct terms and do they have different meanings? Put another way, in cinematography we use things like solids and black wrap to block errant light. Is there an audio equivalent to a duvetyne solid?

I'm hoping somebody else will be able to chime in on this. Interpreting the question. the easiest thing to deal with it's simple get a camera without a fan there's your problem if it hurts stop doing it. Traditionally on camera mounted microphones are more of a shotgun/super cardioid pattern as the Null or cancellation zone in the pick up pattern blocks out most noise behind and around the camera. If you want to you can almost think of the pick up pattern in reverse as light outputting rather than receiving, and the way the microphone is built it acts the barn doors kind of block off where the light goes. I am taking ECU to mean ENG electronic newsgathering style? (and not engine cooling unit?) aka person in front of camera speaking. Getting a microphone away from the camera and onto the talent is a possibility that will get clearer audio. This is usually done with a handheld dynamic microphone in most cases dynamic although anything with a reasonable low handling noise can be used. alternatively a lapel are used to get a nice close clean audio signal.

@@imark7777777 I think we’ve had a little miscommunication. ECU is cinematography speak for extreme closeup. I should not have assumed that it’s an acronym of everyday use. All professional cine cameras have fans which is almost never a problem because we don’t mount mics to camera. Mounting a mic to camera would be more of a blogging thing than a film production thing. The circumstance I was thinking of is when the camera is positioned extremely close to the talent’s face, just a few inches away, and the talent has lines to deliver that need to be recorded. Even a shotgun mic at that distance will pick up fan noise regardless of it’s narrow polar pattern. And a lav would certainly pick it up. I’ve never seen a sound recordist use a textile or any other form of sound dampening shied. I was just wondering if it’s a thing.

@@carlitoshuanes I said that because I knew it was gonna be somewhat vague when the first/ all response on a DuckDuckGo search was engine related. There's the context I was missing. I've done a lot of watching from the sidelines (since I was really young, so sometimes lack Termanology) most news stuff will have an on camera microphone as a back up. hmmm yeah that would be the I'm hoping somebody else chimes in on this. I also couldn't resist the bad joke in there. I have a lot of live Music sound experience, and the last few years I've been broadening my capabilities. If you can't get rid of fan other than directional microphone and maybe some foam I can't think of anything other than Software removal. It would definitely be worth playing around with placement though. Or you can water cool your red like on LTT.... No that's a bad idea.

@@imark7777777 I appreciate the response, thanks! I wonder if they just use the audio for reference and wind up ADR'ing it. It does seem like a challenge to match if the entire frame is the lower half of a face.

@imark7777777 2 жыл бұрын
@@carlitoshuanes yeah I hope somebody chimes in with an answer now I'm curious. From what I've seen done in behind-the-scenes stuff it's usually microphone just out of frame and or wires (wireless Lav) but that doesn't account for the fan issue. oh I also had a "new" instead of "news" my previous comment. ADR is expensive, time-consuming and can lack the original performance so generally avoided unless absolutely necessary.

I understand that a shotgun microphone has a small diaphragm but feel it is a little misleading/confusing to refer to it as a "small-diaphragm condenser," which would usually imply a microphone without a long interference tube... Am I just being difficult?

I don’t need it to be sound proof but even the click of a pin or the creaking of the mattress can be easily be heard through the walls. I just want enough so that I can have a conversation and not wake up the entire barracks.
