This is a sign blank I painted and talk about how pinstripers get their art incredibly symmetrical! This is my first Pinstriping video ever, and I plan to do many more. The goal here is to motivate new artist to action.
Let me know what you think! I could really use some feed back.

I started pinstriping as a in 2005 just to break up the monotony of work and school. Little did I know that I was going to get hooked. I started my career as a custom car builder then transitioned to a body man doing insurance work and hated it so transitioned again to education working at a Community College.To make a long story short, I stopped pinstriping for 10 years and just got back into it because a young co-worker let me know he was interested striping. I started giving him advice to get him started. That has now sparked my interest again. Thanks for your video. I had some trouble getting knowledge when I first started and it's good to see people being so honest about this dying trade.

I’ve watched several guys and their techniques and I’ve gotten attached to your instructional ways. I am 60 and have a bit of an artist in my, or at least I’m somewhat crafty. Nothing of significance but I’ve drawn and painted, but I’ve never felt like I could do something that seemed like it needed a lot of precision. Until now. I picked up the hobby of repairing classic old bikes and part of that involves pinstriping. How can I fix these old classics and not have pinstriping on them? That would be impossible, so I began to look hard into what I’d have to do to make that happen. Lo and behold, as you’ve alluded to, I started noticing that there wasn’t as much precision to this as first meets the eye. I began to noticed the “flaws” and how they were “hidden” and while I will never do portraits, I can do lines, lol. I especially got a ton of experience watching the video of you and your neighbor sharing some Jack and coke and laying down some stripes. Thanks Max. You convinced me that I could do this, and now my bikes are joining in the reappearance of classic American metal cruisers back on the road again.

Love it ALL, Max! I do lots of stuff, but haven't painted a sign in 40 years, or detailed in 30. Have a commission, wanted to refresh my memory (I agree with all you said about KZbin, young kids, and just picking it up). You have a great style of painting and teaching I'm a fan. When I get the sign done, I'll share. Haven't done much with KZbin (or TikTok) yet, Facebook was where things took off for me, but now the kids are grown, I'm reclaiming Mom's artist time. Part of my problem is I do too much stuffs already, and I most certainly don't want to dedicate a bunch of channels. But I do love the idea of working with others and the young, and having all that inside my head go to anyone interested, rather than having it remain there and be useless.

Part of the beauty of pinstriping is that you are doing something my hand which is a one of a kind. No it may not be machine perfect but it's not supposed to be either. Just my opinion. I always loved pinstriping but the building and remodeling business was a much more stable was of making a living. I also enjoyed seeing David Hightowers work.

Hi there Max. Absolutely love your style. The way you incorporate your framing lines into really dynamic elements within the main artwork is great. This elevates your artwork far beyond the standard pinstripe designs that are contained within a set frame and are therefore very static, beautiful in their own right but much less engaging when compared to your artwork. I feel that this engaging aspect combined with all of the visual character of a timeless Art Deco piece definitely enables you and your artwork to occupy a very recognisable corner of the pin striping art space.x 👍🏼

I personally would rather hand painted lines as apposed to the new technology that is out today for cars . Your so right to say it's becoming a lost art 🎨 I like it better and to me it last longer and yes it takes skills and a lot of concentration to achieve what you are doing! Ty for sharing!

Graphic Artist here, this is Amazing. I know it's used for different things but I first thought it could be used with typography and to help design students learn why hand techniques are better than computer art. I'd prefer this to digital art any day. You are so right, it helps your mind focus and fine tunes your senses, that's why it should be taught to young people to keep it alive. I was very curious to see how to keep my lines straight too.

Actually, it is taught to Japanese students. It's basically the same as their "calligraphy" class they are usually required to take. But this sign painting and pinstriping stuff is rapidly becoming extinct.

Great work Max! I am just getting started in this. My biggest issue is when I have a blank panel, palletted brush in hand, and my mind goes blank because I don't know where to begin. How did you overcome this when you were getting started?
@maxkilbourne3142
@maxkilbourne3142 2 жыл бұрын
Simple! Draw a line down the center with a grease pencil ... do the 2 lines on either side of the line coming down into a point. Bing, you've started! Look at someone else's work, and pick the lines you like the best, and copy the shit out of it! That is how you start. After a couple if those, you will develop a knack! Let me know how that goes.

Glass! It is hard to paint on glass. The better your work gets on glass, the way easier to paint on a painted surface. The reason i tell people glass is: you get lots of your first mistakes out of the way on something that is easy to clean, and is reusable! Junk cars are fun to paint on too. No one is complaining.

Hey max,seeing as you mentioned asking a question...... I remember you suggested in another video that lettering is best done with *mack 179s..no.8 and 3 to start*...my question is , with that particular model there are 2 sorts of 179...some brown and some grey i believe ....are the colour differences of these 2 just cosmetic as I don't want to buy tbe wrong ones for lettering....thanks for your advice as always!
@maxkilbourne3142
@maxkilbourne3142 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, I didn't know there were brown AND grey! Somehow I just bought the brown ones always. And, sorry, I don't know the differences between the two. I have always used Mack brushes. But I also don't paint, (or buy brushes as much as I used to). I will definitely look into the differences, and get back to you!

Never understood why people will put a design like this on a classic car. The natural body lines of a classic car and the fact you don't see these cars all over the place are what makes a classic car unique, not stupid looking squiggly line designs.
@maxkilbourne3142
@maxkilbourne3142 3 жыл бұрын
It is true that lines and the 'look' of classic cars are amazing! And that there are so few of them, radically enhances the level of 'uniqueness'. So, I suppose putting different wheels, or a different color of paint, or frenched antennas on a classic automobile could also be construed as "stupid". The way that I see it... even the most beautiful women in the world... wear jewelry. And makeup. What I can't understand, is why people get tattooed! Or wear hand-made clothes!
