i really enjoyed this video and needed the pep talk about being hard on myself too, wanting my first sign ever to be perfect & so much self critiquing

Looks like smoothie was taken off the market-do you recommend a substitute?
@maxkilbourne314227 күн бұрын
I haven't used Smoothie in so long.. didn't know it was gone. I rarely every did need to use it! But, when I did, it was pretty important. I won't be doing the homework on the substitute till I need some. So... to answer your question: No.

Where do you find all these supplies? A regular art store or a hardware store?
@maxkilbourne3142Ай бұрын
My favorite places to shop are Amazon and Coast Airbrush. (Coast sells lots of sign stuff).

@@maxkilbourne3142 Thanks for the answer! I ordered everything through Dragging the Line :) I was happy to find a small Canadian sign painting supplier.

What brand of brushes do you recommend?
@jameswulzen5902 ай бұрын
I'm on the Big Island and being 84 I love the art work and still striping, did very little sign work. I use to use One Shot and sign painters paints that are hard to find here. The art supply store here has a good supply.

Wow, the boy did good. I was not expecting such nice lines from so early in the process. I have seen custom car painters bring in a pin striper after spending weeks and a ton of money on the paint so far, and being nervous as all heck in case they messed up.

This is just sound life advice! Listen and learn folks... Thank you Max, your enthusiasm is infectious and the morale support sure goes a long way. I've got my paints out tonight for the first time in a while, all thanks to getting inspired again by your good self. Appreciate it sir, wish you well.

You've quickly become one of my favourite channels on here, really appreciate what you're doing and showing us new guys the ropes. Hats off to Gary too, better than my first attempts and you both seemed to have a blast doing it. Certainly got me in the mood to give it another go. I've got all my gear out, just waiting for the missus to bugger off to bed later then I can crack on! Massive thank you sir, stay safe and keep having fun 👍

Thank you so much for this mini-series how to, really appreciate the insights and inspiration/motivation to get my ass into gear. I'm at the frustrated early stages, still in awe of how you guys make it look so effortless, but only practice on my end will fix it. Look after yourself sir, cheers 👍

Well we'll well. I got myself some paint (alphanamel) and a kafka #3 stroller. Got a picture frame w glass s. Palleted the brush. Dipped the tip in some mineral spirits and re-palleted. Put the brush to the glass. Holy crap, I have a new found respect for you and the others on here making this look easy. 😢 Couple thoughts.. The paint went on very thin, not great coverage. What did I do wrong?
@maxkilbourne31425 ай бұрын
To thin. There is a place where the viscosity of the paint is just right. What color are you painting with. Some colors thin better than others.

Where do you find the fonts to use? One painter said I should use the classics. Okay, what's that. Lol. Clearly a novice here. Thanks
@maxkilbourne31425 ай бұрын
That depends on what font you want to use!! Try typing in classic sign painting fonts. There are some sugn painting font on signs that you can't find anywhere! Some guys make stuff up. Check out a website called Letterheads. And, Sign Craft magazine. And of course Facebook sign stuff. If you see a sign that you like, write the artist and ask what it is.

Is there a reason you recommend blue vs black stabilo pencils? Thx
@maxkilbourne31426 ай бұрын
I never used a black one before. Sometimes blue is a little difficult to get clean. I imagine it would be worse with black. Whatever works best for people is the best for them.

Are all 3 jars filled with the same thing? Mineral spirits?
@maxkilbourne31426 ай бұрын
Yes, mineral spirits. Sometimes I will use something stronger if a brush has sat for a long time and stiffened up.

Did I miss it… what was the shark sign made from?
@deannak18418 ай бұрын
Yeah I’ve been looking at all the materials and tools, dang they are costly, sadly I was going to use my artists oils and just buy brushes
@deannak18418 ай бұрын
I know u been doing this a long time..but… if you use something like a wooden bbq skewer, laying it across the cup of ur spirits when u pour, the mineral spirits will run neatly down it, and won’t run down the cup, we use when pouring essential oils cuz they’re too expensive to spill a drop.

I was just watching a psychologist and she was discussing how school has paralyzed us we were taught to sit down shut up and get the answer right not to make mistakes and to truly learn through those mistakes you are correct keep it up you will mess it up but you will grow with any crap The Joy comes with learning and struggling through to become more proficient

Tha k you I definitely put down lines then wipe em off ,then put another line down of course like many im not happy with the lines soooo i wipe em off and start again thw hardest part is getting the paint mixeg to meet the environment around you

Love it ALL, Max! I do lots of stuff, but haven't painted a sign in 40 years, or detailed in 30. Have a commission, wanted to refresh my memory (I agree with all you said about KZbin, young kids, and just picking it up). You have a great style of painting and teaching I'm a fan. When I get the sign done, I'll share. Haven't done much with KZbin (or TikTok) yet, Facebook was where things took off for me, but now the kids are grown, I'm reclaiming Mom's artist time. Part of my problem is I do too much stuffs already, and I most certainly don't want to dedicate a bunch of channels. But I do love the idea of working with others and the young, and having all that inside my head go to anyone interested, rather than having it remain there and be useless.
