How do Red Wing Boots age over time?

PART 1 of our Better with Age series of shorts. These Red Wing 0877 boots age differently depending on how you care for them. Sam goes over how the leather and sole holds up over time, comparing a brand new pair with ones which have been worn for a while!

Those are 2 different boots. The first one is the heritage 877 and the second is the work 10877. They use different leathers.

Colour is not that bad. I like it in the both ways

These are two different boot models with a slightly different leather You can tell by the colour of the eyelet metal There was a line change at some point so the second boots may gave been called the 877 originally but they are what you would consider the 10877 nowadays The patina comparison is moot as they are different leathers

They are indeed somewhat different, these are an early pair of the heritage 877s from before the release of Oro-Legacy leather. At this time, from 2007 both the work boot and heritage variants of the 877 style used the same "Oro-iginal" leather as one another, which was yellower and less oily than modern heritage 877s and older Red Wings decades before. The Oro-Legacy leather came in 2013 to get that redder, traditional look back into the heritage line - this does mean that the modern 877 won't age exactly like these pre 2013 877s or the modern 10877, however they will still change colour and fade over time with different approaches to care, which is what we were trying to get across. We did not have a post-2013 pair of 877s to get a direct comparison, however for reference the patina effect is generally more apparent and will usually be redder on the modern 877 as the "Oro-Legacy" leather is generally more oily and redder as standard. It is also worth mentioning that the modern 10877 work boot still has minor differences to the pre 2013 heritage 877 although they are very minor.
