Just some extra thoughts: This model of a generational creation mythology is actually *incredibly* common across Western and Eastern myths. In Greek myth, one version of the story places Chaos as the first entity, and one of the entities that came *from* Chaos was Gaia (Earth). Then from Gaia came the Ourea (mountains). Likewise, *from* Nyx (Night) came Day and Light (Aether and Hemera). In one Hindu story, *from* Preservation came Creation. In Lakota mythology, *from* the Rock (a primordial being) came the Earth and Waters. It was really cool to see this very same theme in the Avatar mythology. There are all smaller divisions of the being that came before them, in a sense. I'm also not sure that this 'parental' relationship is voluntary. These concepts/physical things come from one another whether or not the spirits choose it. This would somewhat explain the estrangement of Koh from the Mother of Faces. ~ Tim

What if Koh realized his mother was slowly dying by giving herself away. @Balance of The hill I'd assume the first spirits either belong in the distant universe as spirits completely off the planet. Or the first spirits were likely Vaatu and Raava. Probably starting with Raava as she is creation and order, then Vaatu came right afterward as chaos and death follows behind life. Though I suppose it could also go the other way around, where-as the universe is inherently chaotic and life only exists because of chance, then order came along as life grew. Personally I think they were born at the same time as each other as twin gods of the universe. As the universe is inherently chaotic, but also follows a lot of patterns that can be mistaken for design or order.

The idea of spirits branching off from parental spirits definitely makes a lot of sense. I actually read up on some lakota mythology with similar ideas in how the primary spirits of the sun, earth, rock, and sky birthed all these secondary/tertiary spirits like the moon, stars and even mountains and animals.

If The Mother Of Faces was the spirit that embodied and created individuality and separateness, wouldn't that mean she had to be the first spirit. Raava and Vaatu wouldn't have been two sides until there where two sides to embody. Likewise, balance between two things such as yin and yang, push and pull because if all was one then all would have acted in the same manner. Just a theory but, wouldn't that mean all spirits are her children because she gave them all their faces and personalities. Koh may have simply been more attached to his mother than most.

My favorite, I'm gonna kind of cheat and say Twi and La only because I don't feel it's right to say one without the other. I like Twi and La for what they represent and how Koh the Face Stealer described them. "Their spirit names, are Twi, and La. Push, and pull, your moon and ocean. They balance each other, push and pull, life and death, good, and evil, Yin, and Yang." I know Rava and Vatuu (probably butchered that) have the same thing going on being order and chaos, but it doesn't have that same feel. Twi and La are in constant balance, always circling each other, keep each other safe while also keeping each other at bay. When the moon spirit was killed, he (I'm going to assume the ocean spirit is the man in this Yin Yang relationship because Yue becomes the moon) joins with the avatar and goes on a rampage against the fire nation for what they did, and gave a special punishment to Admiral Zhou, but as soon as the moon was restored, he stopped his rampage and returned to be with the moon once more. Rava and Vatuu on the other hand are described as being in a state of perpetual conflict. Rava is Order, so she must keep Chaos at bay, but by doing so she creates Chaos herself. We see in their very first seen that Rava keeping Chaos at bay is more of a lesser evil at best, their conflict is destroying the forest, driving the spirits away in fear, and all in all she doesn't seem quite orderly when she's the one with the anger in her voice yelling at Wan to stay out of it. Vatuu is Chaos, but other than making the spirits angry (mainly at humans) and wanting the spirits to claim everything as there's he doesn't do much to show it. He doesn't just destroy everything in his path, he doesn't do the more subtle things like get in people's heads and make them fight each other over even the pettiest or simplest of things, in fact he seems to only have an affect on spirits. It's said that if he wins at harmonic convergence then there's 10,000 years of darkness, but we didn't exactly get 10,000 years of light and order when Rava won so why would it be pure darkness and chaos when Vatuu wins? Don't get me wrong, I love both Avatar the Last Airbender and the Legend of Korra. I even love Rava and Vatuu and their stories. However, if I'm going to choose my favorite spirits from what I've seen, I will always choose Twi and La.

I feel like Koh represent a more sinister concept. What I imagine is that he represents envy. The desire to have exactly what you yourself is missing, fits with the fact that he steals peoples faces and what makes them individual. another theory: in buddhism reinkarnation is something that people try to avoid so that their spirit can rejoin nirvana. What if the mother of faces represent nirvana, and Koh were ment as a guide to help the essence of people back to her, once they demised, but he abandoned his job and started keeping the essences for himself. it has little to no grounds this theory but I think that Koh initially had a different part to play but somehow became corrupted. As MoF says she initially named him something else indicating that he somehow have strayed from his purpose.

Cool vid! It makes me wonder how Koh and his mother became estranged if he misses her so. And the simple answer is she's mad at him for stealing faces. But another possibility is that his fundamental nature IS to be estranged from his mom. What she says separateness came into being through her and that they've been estranged "from the beginning" maybe she referring to the same thing. That by creating a "child" she created a being "doomed" to be separated from her by definition. And he's trying to undo that eternal torment by gobbling up as many faces as he can get his pincers on--the many becoming one.I think that's a cooler theory than then just having a fight and he likes stealing. Like mentioned in your pinned post, I can definitely see how spirits would come from primordial beings of bigger, superfluous concepts. Nyx is especially a fun topic, in my personal opinion. In one variety of the story, she and Erebus (Night and Darkness) spawned from Chaos. From them, came Hemera and Aether (day and the atmosphere). From Hemera and Aether, spawned Gaia, Ouranous, and Thalassa (Earth, Sky, and Sea), and so on and so forth until you get the Olympians, and their very human attributes and affiliations. But that's basic. The most interesting side are the theoretical gods that spawned from Nyx and Erebus, or just Nyx. Thanatos and Hypnos (Death and Sleep) are just a few among their many children, as they have so many dark ideas that spawned from them. Geras (old age), Eris (strife), Moros (doom) and the Fates/the three Morai (the last FIVE being spawned solely from Nyx), Momus (satire/sarcasm), Apate (deceit), Oizys (misery), Dolos (trickery), and so many more demons relating to nightmares...but also interestingly, Philotes (friendship), Eleos (mercy), and Phanes (procreation). These gods - Nyx, Erebus, and their spawn (though for some, their parentage is everywhere from those two, to the Titans, to even the Olympians, Eris being one example) - are more conceptual than anything, and represent this huge concepts instead of being narrowed down to something like War, a very human concept that wouldn't exist if Life and Death didn't. It honestly would make a lot of sense if spirits in the world of Avatar acted this way, this kind of timeline and hierarchy of creation based on what the spirit represents.

Graphic Novels: Mother of Faces, Lady Tienhai, Kemurikage. TLoK: n/a (Raava and Vaatu were awesome, but they only made it possible for the incident with Aang, Roku, and everyone else at the end of Season 2's penultimate).

So, since I'm fairly certain more people will be watching this soon, I had another idea of What Koh embodies. Jealousy. Before his mother, all were the same. But once individuality was born, then came jealousy. The lust to have what others did, to take it from them. The legends speak of Koh 'missing his mother so much he takes faces', but I think that's honestly just myth. He's doing exactly as he's meant to. He is jealousy, so he takes others individuality to use it himself. He's jealous of their happiness, their sadness, their...everything that makes Them Them. So the only way to stay safe with him, is to not make Any expression with your face - be as neutral as possible. He might seem 'evil', but jealousy, or Envy, can be good. To give us a goal to work towards, something to work to become, rather than just being Fully content with ourselves and never striving to be better.

What could be interesting and possible is the fact that the mother have faces said Koh had a "different name" originally which might imply that Koh had a different purpose. Maybe Koh was meant to be a sort of bridge between Non-identity and identity but as she said something must have went wrong as he was separated from her and then out of despair he became twisted and instead of bridging the gap sought to distort and destroy the gap whenever he could. He himself also may have had a lack of identity since he probably was something in the middle and thus also seeks out multiple identities to fill that void as well as his mother puts "to feel closer to her" and ease his despair. ..... either way amazing video as always so happy to see your channel is growing - you very much deserve it!

So I may be a bit late to the party, but I enjoyed the video and your interpretation of spiritual reproduction further developed a theory I have regarding Koh. I think it would be interesting if Koh is a more important or fundamental spirit. But what kind of spirit would he be? What is as timeless as individuality? I think an argument could be made that Koh is the spirit of envy, for a couple of reasons. If we go with the premise that ideas and concepts can give birth to new ideas and concepts and this is how spirits reproduce, what are some things that come from individuality. Envy of anothers' looks, beauty, identity, and personality is something that would happen as individuality came into a world that did not have it before. Envy is widely considered an ugly thing and Aang makes a point of talking about how ugly Koh is. Also the condition for Koh to steal your face is not just that he sees it, but that he sees you express emotion. He has to see you express part of yourself or your identity, if you will, before he can steal your face. If you know nothing of another person, how can you want something of theirs? You can't want something that you don't know exists. Beyond that he refers to the stolen faces as his collection, possibly inferring that he doesn't have any desire for them beyond to simply have them. And while his mother says that he wants the faces because he misses her, she specifically says "the legends say." Suggesting either she doesn't know for sure if this is the reason he wants faces or if she does but just does not want to say what the real reason is. TL:DR Koh could be the spirit of envy birthed from individuals' desire for aspects others have.

So if Koh embodies conformity to societal roles, and the loss of indentity: 1. It makes sense now that he'd take Kuruk's wife on his wedding day, partially to symbolize how Kuruk had to sacrifice his free-spirited nature to take on the responsibility of the Avatar, or to "settle down" and become a good husband. Also, she lost her freedom and identity by being wedded to the Avatar. She was no longer her own person, but "the Avatar's wife" and that made her a target for his foes. 2. It also makes sense that Aang had to keep a straight face and avoid expressing his emotions around Koh. Koh steals one's face when it shows expression, which symbolizes how sometimes society discourages free expression of emotions, and values objectivity and stoicism.

the intro killed me, congrats. Love the video, I like the theory, it's a very nice concept! Unfortunately I'm not really deep in the avatar lore, and it makes me wonder, you mentioned that most of the spirits we meet throughout the story, they're spirits of exising things/places (rivers, mountains, etc), it'd be interesting to see how the spirits embodying concepts would turn out! Sure I wouldn't want to meet a spirit of warfare and the like, but imagine meeting a spirit of acceptance or familial love!

Your thoughts of individualism reminded me of the swamp episode where Hu, the protector of the swamp, explained that the separation of the elements was an illusion; that time and death was an illusion. The “one became the many” could be connected to that I think.

My Avatar fanon revolves (lol) around the Sun Spirit. Thanks to your explanation here, I was able to fit him better into the cosmology, and even justify and create several other spirit-based characters.

I didn't think you'd be able to make this video in a way that didn't seem memey and ridiculous, but I think this is my favorite ATLA video by you. It really adds to the story having a concept of how the world formed out of a chaotic mess of ideas and concepts. Only problem is... what's going to be the new inside joke in the comments :p Edit: My favorite spirit was probably Koh the Facestealer, I just like his voice and the little speech he has about Tui and La. That or Wa Shin Tong (Spelling?)

I think this actually goes a long way to explain the forms that spirits take in Avatar. A lot of them look like animals or other natural features present in the Physical World, so if they're embodying concepts of real things, that sort of implies that the Spirit World exists as a reflection of the Physical World but on a different plane of existence where everything is more conceptual. That lines up with common belief systems in real life, of course, that believe in a spirit world that more or less inhabits the same physical place as the real world, but on a different plane of existence. The really trippy thing is that Vaatu was able to break a couple of holes right through one plane of existence to another. Silly Vaatu, that's not how metaphysics are supposed to work.

I wonder if Koh was something like a first try for the Mother of Faces in attempting to create beings, but something went awry at some point (possibly Koh only gained by taking from others???) and so a rift formed between them, leading to where they are now.

Well Koh is indeed a nasty creature (insectoid). It makes sense to want to look prettier and shape its identity by stealing faces...However it should be stealing bodies instead, if it wanted to look more likeable...

I'd have to say my favorite Spirit of the series is that one from Wan's flashback in TLOK that calls him "Stinky" I cant remember if they had a name or not, but they were my favorite.

Spawning in mythology is always funky. In Greek myths Athena pops out of Zeus's head. In some native America stories a God popped out three children by accident. Other gods are formed from mud or someone wishing really hard. It's pretty amazing.
