Dig into the science of how anabolic steroids and their recreational use can affect your body, organs and brain.
--
Steroids. They’ve caused global scandals. They’re banned in most athletic competitions. Yet the same properties that help elite athletes and bodybuilders improve performance also make steroids valuable for treating many illnesses and injuries, such as AIDS and cancer. So if steroids are used as medicine, they must be safe to use recreationally, right? Anees Bahji explores the effects of steroids.

Actually a pretty good video compared of most "educational" videos on the subject, but one correction. The testicles shrinking isn't mainly due to feminizing effects, but due to the suppression of the HPTA that testosterone causes. In short, exogenous testosterone will cause the testicles to stop producing their own testosterone, which causes them to shrink.

This is actually due to the fact, that you expose your body to external testosterone or other steroids binding to androgen receptor and so your body (testicles) will stop producing natural testosterone and thus be shrinking. This is in most cases reversible.

Long term anabolic steroid user here. This is a pretty decent video. One thing it misses is that a lot of the side effects you hear about (anger, hair loss, liver problems, etc.) are not general to steroids as a whole, but unique to certain steroids specifically. Your liver really isn't at risk from any injectable steroid, it's oral steroids that harm your liver. The anger issue is really only present in stronger drugs like trenbolone, nandralone, or halotestin. I think the general populace tends to generalize all anabolics as just "steroids" but there is a world of difference between different compounds.
@arandomwarlock7414
@arandomwarlock7414 2 жыл бұрын

@@arandomwarlock7414 I would actually say that on the whole, I injectables are significantly safer for the Gen pop. The main concern is that their longer half-life means that if side-effects do present, the compound will be in your body much longer.

I've been thinking of taking steroids for awhile now because i have been working out for well over 2 years and my body has not changed much except for a few kilos being added. I wanted to ask if a person were to take steroids in a small amount just to get fit and then stop and keeps working out without them, would that effect a person? and if so, in what way.

i think people are missing the important context that testosterone levels have dropped in half since your grandfather's generation. Many reasons for this, and some of them are hard for an individual to control, like microplastics in animal feed or hormones in the water supply absorbed in-utero. So the decision isn't 'TRT vs natural state', it's 'TRT vs low-t' which also comes with its own physical and mental health problems, especially in men.

I know a few guys that were "recreational" users just trying to get bigger and bigger in the gym. The first problem is that no matter how big they got (and they did get a lot bigger) it was never enough and they just kept using more and more. A couple of them were even good about trying to off-cycle and do it as safely as possible. Unfortunately a couple of them are also now experiencing health problems with their liver and kidneys about 10 years later. Moral of the story,... it's not worth it because you'll likely never feel satisfied with the gains you get from them anyway (even though you will get significant muscle growth), you will lose most of those gains rapidly when you do decide to stop taking them, and you will very likely do yourself a lot of harm in the process. Absolutely not worth it unless you want to devote you're entire life to professional powerlifting or something similar.

Question: Whenever I see videos similar to this, I always wonder what the baseline intake the science is referring to for each type of steroid. For example, those same bodybuilders in the 50s-70s never had a lot of these issues. At that point it was still experimental. Doses were lower. Nowadays, the bodybuilders are bigger and one of the main reasons is using higher doses. In that same time we have seen these newer and younger athletes pass away due to issues and complications. So, what I’m asking is if there is a place where you can see the amounts that these studies refer to? Because there is a big difference in the intake for bodybuilders of the past and bodybuilders of today.
@nomobobby
@nomobobby 3 жыл бұрын
IDK, that answer's probably buried in medical papers somewhere, and may or may not be accessible online. Also if the dependency issue is true, then wouldn't those bodybuilders still run into those issues over the long haul? Especially as they got older and it got harder to maintain the muscle growth?
@Kakyyoin
@Kakyyoin 3 жыл бұрын
Purely anecdotal evidence, but I’d say why you see bodybuilders look more freaky and have health complications are likely due to a these few reasons; one, the use of HGH and insulin. Abusing these two can lead to enlarged organs. This is where the bubble gut likely comes from. In the 50s-60 bodybuilders likely just ran test and maybe nothing else. Trenbolone wasn’t even invented until 1963. Second, more people are doing bodybuilding now. This leads to a larger group, which leads to more people on the extreme end of the spectrum and also increases competition. More competition leads to people taking more drastic measures.

Just the sheer amount they take these days… When Arnold and the boys took 100cc, doctor-administered, a week of Test, today they take 500cc a day, if not more. Also, as mentioned, the variety available. Back in the day there was only Test, maybe one or two more, but nowhere near the volume of today!
@bobbo857
@bobbo857 2 жыл бұрын
Bodybuilders of the past used to take literally insane amounts of anabolic steroids, some even stating they were in the realm of 5000-10000mg per DAY. That would be considered by today's standard very high for a week, let alone every day. The main difference between then and now is the introduction of other components like HGH, IGF-1, insulin, etc. Bodybuilders are dying so frequently today because of insulin and diuretics. Both are extremely dangerous and extremely effective. The problem is unlike steroids, where you can be pretty flexible with your dosage for short periods of time and "push the limits" so to speak every now and again, with insulin, miscalculate your dose/carb ratio even a little bit and you can go into an instant coma/die. As for diuretics, every time you hear of a bodybuilder miss a show because they got the "flu" the day before, what they're really saying is they overdid the diuretics and are cramping so bad that their heart might stop... No bueno.

I've been using AAS for years and most users will keep getting their bloods done every few months. This way you can see your cholesterol, liver function, kidney function and many other things. Testosterone aromatises into E, but you can keep this in check with AA medication. The side effects are not as bad/common as this video makes out but they are certainly there and you can't go into this expecting you wont be experiencing any of these.

And the irony that this guy speaks about steroids but it is given so freely to our women and there have been no long term studies to understand the effects of these drugs on women... Look up testosterone replacement therapy. Basically answer to your question is that it is used in “micro” doses compared to what bodybuilders cycle forever can make you just in the upper range of normal for test and this can be good. An actual micro dose less than that would literally do nothing. Remember it’s not a binary of do you have steroid in your body or not, test is the main natural anabolic steroid and any dose that doesn’t really increase over your natural amount much will have no muscle building effect. It may have a bag effect since if your body detects exogenous testosterone then it may produce less of its own to compensate and when you are using so little it is a problem of actually reducing how much anabolic steroid is actually in your blood.
