So what if, theoretically, the US where to go to war with a fairly well-equipped country. Maybe like Iraq in 1990. Your platoon is supporting an infantry advance into an urban area. You're watching a main road and a T-72 flies around a corner and that bitch is looking right at you. You have to go through all that before you can shoot?

No, Boom is the first thing heard by the platton. TC: Tank GNR: identified loader: up TC fire GNR on the way. Then TC: will call a contact report to alert the rest of the platoon.TC could also designate tank.

As a US Army Tanker, I approve of your video. The way we train on M1A2s or on the M1128 MGS(Which is now a Calvary Scout platform) is just as you explained in Doctrine. Our movement to contact, our bounding, our battle drills. It's quite amazing to finally hear from someone knows their stuff.

As a former Abrams tanker this is 99.9% accurate. Well done! Only little thing was we have two different callouts for targets. Yelling "CONTACT LEFT! 10 O'Clock!" would mean, I see a target of unknown disposition that is not engaging us, to the left of our direction of travel. You can get more accurate with distance and direction after that. But typically, it's telling the TC and the gunner that they need to find the target and figure out whether or not to shoot at it. The PL might want to get the entire platoon into a better firing position for instance. Calling "ACTION LEFT! 10 O'Clock!" is calling out a target that is actively engaging you. The gunner and TC now know that as soon as they can ID and lase the target, that they should fire since the target is a known enemy, and we do not possess the element of surprise Also, nice work finding that video of the .M1150 ABV firing off that MICLIC! I've never even seen one of those vehicles in person, let alone firing off MICLIC.

I used to think tank camouflage used to be as simple as applying a few spots and patches of paint so you can hide better. My brother who was a former armored recconasiance commander and armor modeler said camouflage is more sophisticated than that. He used to spot many critical mistakes in how I painted my tanks saying how the wrong pattern would draw the enemies eye faster even with the right pallet of colour for the terrain. Camouflage schemes must do an effective play on light at differing sight ranges. The camouflage must not only make a still tank hard to spot but buy a tank a few seconds of being dialed in by appearing to be heading at a different angle as a gunner thinks or appearing out of focus. I have painted many great tank models only to discover later I made several critical mistakes in the paint job. After several models painted I still feel I never properly learned exactly how the camouflage scheme is supposed to work in differing environments, time of day or when the tank is in motion. Since I never served in an armored platoon, I can never get it. I would love a couple videos on the science and psychology of tank camouflage

Good video as always, Matsimus. I was surprised to see a video on a different channel, about the lack of laser detectors on Abrams. Due to budget constraints, the tanks are vulnerable to targeting lasers used by peer/ near peer adversaries. An Abrams crew apparently won't know they've been targeted until a round hits them. A video from you on this subject would be appreciated, if you haven't covered it already. As with everything, the story behind this is no doubt more complicated than on first glance.

last time I was in an M1 (IP) was clear back in 1994 in the MT ARNG was an E5 Gunner. I was also a Tank Crew Evaluator & a Conduct of Fire Trainer (COFT) Instructor/Operator. The standard for your "Time of Start" on a defensive engagement was from discharge of the weapon OR the stopping of all forward movement of the vehicle. We only had the older 105MM rifled main gun on the IPs, but the stabilization was so good that I would just fire from the GAS (after I had first IDd the target from "in the hole") as we cleared the berm. The driver knew to stop & reverse once the round went off. IF it were a multiple target engagement the driver would stay put & we would immediately traverse left/right as needed to get on the next target (Again, pre-IDd from cover, usually a "soft" (HEAT) OR possibly longer ranged SABOT target). Regardless, we had some super quick kill times (time of flight for 105MM SABOT (TNG) to 1600M was about 1.2 seconds if I remember correctly?) since time started as that first round discharged. We had some combined multiple tgt engagements as low as 7.2 seconds in our Company. LOTS of fun!! ;) Now, shooting from the BFV (M2A2 - Not ODS but w/heavy fluted barrel) later when we reorganized. . . Well, let's just say you don't get into a "gun fight" w/an MBT whilst in an IFV!! LOL! NO multiple tgt engagements either since time-of-flight for a 3-round killing burst just took TOO LONG! {:] My first BC had also been a tanker (also a Tank Crew Evaluator & COFT IO) & we gamed it out several ways in the BFV COFT & it just could't be done! Team work/Section Gunnery was critical in those BFVs! Good summary of contact drills, etc. here in your video. Miss those days!

Though not official some British crews will identify their target to the troop - "Lead tank, MINE!" This prevents multiple tanks engaging the same target. Another trick is to use a pencil as an antenna, this drastically reduces the radio range, but is perfect for inter-troop communications. BTW, my boss co-wrote Armour.

If I was in a good firing position and for whatever reason I was going to stay there for a while, I would switch off the engine and go to APU anyway. There appears an implied assumption that the M1 has a huge heat efflux which I dispute also. You should bear in mind, that in a hot environment, heat signature from the engine is almost useless anyway.
@jonny2954
@jonny2954 7 жыл бұрын
So you just assumed that #1 we're talking about a longer time the tank has to stay on position and #2 we're in a hot enviroment? Actually it does matter in a hot enviroment since it doesen't need to be *much* hotter, but *simply* hotter. The defense industry is developing thermal repellent armor (AMAP-S) and addon solutions (barracuda, solarshield) for a reason. Hot exaust is still a issue.

It is possible to put contact rings (in which a contact picks up from at any point around the ring) to ensure that the bundle of cables do not get wound up by continuous rotation of the turret in one direction. However, this can be quite bulky (especially if you have 10+ wires) so I would imagine that a digital wireless signal is sent with low powered transmitters (the hull should prevent any rogue signals from going in or out.) and they just have 2 contact rings for power. I cannot say for sure what it is but that would be my best guess. I have seen this kind of system used for observatories. They could just provide a certain length of cable and let it get wound up and have the turret stop after 2 or so full turns but I do find that the be impractical in some scenarios.
@johno9507
@johno9507 7 жыл бұрын
phinix250. You don't necessarily need one contact ring per wire. By having a multiplexed system you can use a single contact for multiple systems. And besides, all the turret control computers are in the turret. The minimum thats really needed is power and comms to the driver. The turret is really a self contained unit and they are tested independently before being installed in the hull.

If the enemy is well dug then tanks only fire from a distance by changing positions (caterpillar, side stepping etc) and the infantry goes in to clear the opposition. Tanks have limitations. Vulnerable to anti tank fire and obstacles. If the position is lightly held then tanks blaze through it and infantry captures as follow up

The best fire command - "FIRE!!"
@peterking2651
@peterking2651 6 жыл бұрын
In a British MBT the commander places his MRS mark on the target, squeezes the dog clutch to bring the gun on to target. He will then give the fire command, ending with ON! The gunner replies ON as the target is identified. The gunner also confirms ammunition type and range (gunner may give the commander the range - his TLS is more closely aligned with MRS). Once the target is "killed" the gunner reports target, and the commander will respond with one of the following: "Target stop", "Target, Target fire", "Target, next target left/right, FIRE!" I must say I like the US gunner reporting "Away", instead of "Firing, NOW!" The reason NOW is shouted is that's when the gunner pulls the trigger the tank recoils. Delays in shouting NOW can result in the commander getting a face full if sight as the gun/sight recoil.

The Gunnery Qualifications are graded, Distinguished (best), Superior (good), Qualified (OK), if you don't Qualify your Tank goes down range with the next unit to do Table VIII (oh goody an extra 30 days in the field, for 150 that year instead of 120, and that's peacetime). @emmahstone3106
@emmahstone3106 7 жыл бұрын
Zach that is untrue. It depends if your unit is under strength (needs more crew members). When you come out of basic training and are assigned to a tank crew at your unit, you'll either be a driver or a loader (both are entry level positions), although the driver is most often the newest crew member. I was a gunner as a Specialist because my unit was really under strength (half of our tanks didn't have a full crew). The gunner is a "sergeant" position, but the rank isn't a requirement. As for commanders,only the platoon leader (commander of the 1 tank in a tank platoon) is an officer. The LT's wingman (2 tank) has a Staff Sergeant (sometimes Sergeant) as a commander. The platoon sergeant (most often a Sergeant First Class, but sometimes the most senior Staff Sergeant in the platoon) is the commander of the 4 tank, while his wingman (3 tank) is a Staff Sergeant or Sergeant like the 2 tank.

James Mc: I don't know what its like now but when I was in RTR (during the Cold War) you were taught 1 "trade" (either driver / gunner / radio operator/loader) during basic training. When you got posted to your regiment you were then taught a second trade. All crew members had at least 2 trades and the commander had all 3.

reddevilparatrooper the gunner needs to say the range to the target after he identifies it and before the TC gives the command to fire :-) And on the second engagement, since the command "fire fire heat" was given with a sabot battle-carried, the loader would say "heat loaded" to which the gunner would reply "heat designated". Shooting a HEAT with SABOT designated would make you hit waaaay short :-)

My last gunnery was in 2000,my unit still had M1A1s.The M1A2 SEP fire commands were different from M1A1 fire commands because the TC had to designate targets.When I gunned on the A1,once I identified I lased,got the range.I wait for my TC to announce fire.Yes the HEAT engagement the Loader announces "HEAT loaded.Then the gunner indexes from SABOT to HEAT.My buddy in the next platoon forgot to index HEAT from SABOT on a practice engagement.Sometimes we forget even though we spent hours in the MCOFT.I have never gunned on the M1A2 or TCd in one.

Not me. I have heard of old stories back in the day from the older TCs who were on the M60A1s and early M1s which had the 105mm. Trying to lapload a 120mm round especially HEAT would be a pain in the ass. The 105s were easier in the M60A1s because the turret was larger inside and the rounds were in honeycomb racks exposed without the ammo blast doors on the M1. The old TCs said that they did lapload during static defense CALFEXs (Combined Arms Live Fire Exercises) to bang away on pop up targets. My gunneries back in the late 90s on Tank Table 8s the tower would listen to my fire commands and every noise inside the turret going through our CVC helmets. They can hear the ammo doors open and close to include the loader hitting the knee switch and the loader hitting the tabs to remove the rounds. If they hear the ammo doors open more than once and the tabs being hit on one firing cycle. The tower will call a safety on my ass. So as they say "Be warned!" don't fucking do it.

About the whole sudden stop throwing off aim.... A milisecond delay or even less on the pedal so a sensor can detect it and help the gun react to the sudden stop. Would that probably help? IDK just some idea popped up in my head. Also play carrier deck. It is basically flight deck spotting on a Nimitz class as you try to launch recon and strike aircrafts while also having them land and receive cargo.

It's a mine clearing charge. The long string is a hose filled with high explosives. The rocket carries the hose across the minefield which is then detonated - clearing a path through the minefield. (An even then the first tank across should be the one fitted with a mine plow or mine rollers.)

One exception does not make a rule and America has a reputation pushing their arms systems even into places where they are not appropriate. Look at the millions in dollars of bribes (at 1970's prices) to get F-104's sold into Germany. They had to be altered so much for German requirements that it totally negated any positive qualities and turned them into "the flying coffin".

My last Tank was an M60A3 TTS, I freely admit NO familiarity with the Rheinmetall 120mm Main Gun. I was a Tank Commander, & so during Gunnery Qualifications, my job was in the cupola. But I liked to Load (lowest ranking position), so when any crew was short handed, they would take a crewman from another Tank to fill out that Tank for its Gunnery Run. Kind of hard o the Loaders if they have to work two vehicles, the ammo was a little lighter, but a main gun round still weighed 35 pounds (15 kilos) give or take. doesn't sound like much, remember the Loader had to help load the Tank before the run, then load the main gun 20 or 30 times for each run. Your running on 3 or 4 hours sleep, interrupted by the night engagements of the rest of your Company or your at the end of the line waiting to make your run, either way short of sleep & loading one Tank is exhausting, loading for two Tanks will kick your ass. So I usually loaded for 2 or 3 other tanks. Once with a pile of surplus ammo left over after gunnery I loaded for the Platoon Sergeant, we got off 22 rounds of 105mm main gun ammo in just seconds over one minute, call it 3seconds per round, lets see that German 120 do that! By the way when a TC gets cannot identify from his Gunner, he alerts the crew with, "From My Position; On the Way!" Doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

in WWII Heinz Godarian wrote the script for blitzkrieg with his book Achtung Panzer. I believe that this was the first COORDINATED battle strategy for a fluid battle plan. Simply put; Tanks and mechanized forces sweep in decimating everything in front of them. if there are fortified enemy points ahead of the armor they radio in and the Dive Bombers are called in for precision destruction of the target, thus allowing the armor to roll on. and lastly the slower elements of the assault would follow behind and clean out then prepare to hold the captured ground. this was all evolutionary thinking at the time. I was wondering what kind of place, if any, this strategy in current day battle strategies. Has it been adapted, updated and refined or discarded as out of date?
