I am not Korean, so I can’t speak for them. But from an objective perspective, I think one of the best things Japan can do is teach their citizens the whole Japanese empirical history. Japanese don’t need to feel ashamed of being Japanese but they should at least fully understand how their nation has affected others in the past. I think understanding, though it may not be a solution, is at least a step in the right direction.

I totally agree with you. As an italian I can compare this to ww2. As you know Italy supported Germany and back in the days they did horrible things (horrible isn't even enough to describe it) but in school we learnt about every single details of it, there are a lot of project where we met people that survived to Auschwitz and other places like that. So I think that education is very useful to do not repeat the same mistakes, they don't need to feel ashamed.

Constantin Klose didn't japanse also tell blacks to suck up the micro racism aimed towards them? Wasn't their excuse "we don't know better". Why can't Japanese people ever take blame? Same for the woman not wanting to get married or have kids but japanase people blame it on society, instead of trying to solve the problem they just blame another factor and keep living they are 100 percent right.

I think as a Korean, apology means noting. I just want Japanese government teach their young generations more about WWII history. That can be your proud history of Japan but also your past war crimes too. I also know about Vietnam war history. We Koreans did many war crimes like you no matter how big it was. I really feel sorry to Vietnamese who were suffer from Korean soldiers back then. But how did I feel sorry to them? The answer is education.

BLACKOUT in Vietnamese, we don’t mention about the war crimes that Korean did during that war, we even didn’t know that the South Korean were involved in our war, caused we hadn’t been touched about it in school. We can only know about it through the internet. North Vietnamese know nothing about the South Korean War crime, but South Vietnamese does. Fact all the war crimes is happened in South Vietnam and to the South Vietnamese civilians. U.S pay South Korean money to protested the South border and the South Vietnamese people, and to kill NVA and Việt Minh, but instead South Korean came to South Vietnamese village, then killing and rapping everyone.

But hating current Japanese for their ancestors' sins is totally wrong. I'm Indonesian and my laye grandfathers are the victim of Japanese empire too. But I don't hate current Japanese people because their ancestors did mistakes in the past. You can only hate people if those people did the mistake by their own hands. And tk be honest, sering Korean people hating Japanese indiscriminately making me start to hating Korean.

@@thefourthreich2039 No one hates the current generation of Japan though. They hate the education system for keeping Japanese students ignorant of how their Empire treated their colonies, which means we can never be sure if they will grow up ignorant enough to repeat past mistakes. We don't want the kids to be ashamed of being Japanese, we want the reassurance that they will know better. And that's coming from a Filipino. My country has long stopped hating Japan, and Spain, and the USA yet we know we can never tell S.Korea when to forgive Japan if they skipped the most important step on their part when asking for forgiveness.

I 100% agree with this comment, but their is also an aspect og shame and dishonor that a none japanese will never understand. And if you keep bringing up the past like South Korea does, then you constantly plant seeds of hate in the new generations, and this hate will turn into a new war one day. Korea is using anti japan sentiments to fight against japan. If you do not know about it, you should look it up.

As a European, seeing this is really shocking. Japanese from all ages and generations don't seem to be aware and are completely clueless of the horrors japanese did. Most because they weren't taught, others as that old man who prefers to close their eyes and accuse other countries of their wrongdoings too. He seemed like a kid honestly. I am truly shocked. The japanese government and media is completely at fault, I've searched more for it, and they've actually distorting their history in their history books at school. That's why young generations are completely clueless. I was quite even astonished that young girl knew about the comfort women, but as she explained it's because she saw a woman protest and learned about it. My heart is with all the few victims still alive and still suffering because they're still waiting for a sincere apology, and their families.

Korean soldiers raped many Vietnamese women during Vietnam War. Many half Korean-Vietnamese called "Laidanhan" exist in Vietnam. It's really strange I never heard about half-Japanese -Korean in Korea. They are trying to decieve foreigners with K-pop which is more accessible than J-pop because they don't respect copy right. Japanese block foreigners to access J-pop through internet. That's why J-pop is less Known than K-pop. Not because less quality. Actually K-pop looks like copy of J-pop in late 90's. Young foreigners don't know it.

It's human nature to become defensive, at first. Then once there has been time to ruminate upon it people tend to view it more objectively; even if it is just within their own minds. The important thing is that the conversation is going on and that people are trying to address, and if at all possible, resolve or mend such an issue. The problem is is cannot truly be part of history until it goes from the hearts of people into their minds. Which, with that said, we're human: so there's a long road ahead.

Interesting segment. As an older Korean keenly aware of historical conflicts across the globe, it was interesting to see Japans perspective on relations between the two countries. I would have to agree that the world would be a better place if we can focus more on a prosperous future together and let old wounds heal. If we go back in history far enough, the people of Korea and Japan are not that far apart. We are in many aspects related cousins.

It isn’t even only past racism/colonialism that Japanese are responsible for. Disregarding past atrocities like Unit 731, Sado Gold mine complex, they still think of Koreans as inferior subhumans with examples like: Manga Kenkanryu. Racist anti-korean literature dominates Japanese bookstores and racist anti-Korean protests are commonplace: so when a certain ethnicity hates you that much, its only naturally to be wary of them. Historically they’ve always wanted to rape and pillage us just look at the Imjin War. But Koreans need to bring more recent racism to light so others realize that Japan never stopped being racist and backwards.

Japan: Power of Facebook -- Comfort Women Narrative Crumbling bit by bit The Wall Street Journal and others now are picking up reality about the Comfort Women issue, straight from my interviews and from this Facebook page. Until just weeks ago, there was never mention of the 2007 IWG report. Team members I was working with independently found the buried IWG report in the US National Archives, and they provided it to me. We studied it in detail, and weeks ago released its existence: Now it is breaking open: "Primary source information was also missing from the article regarding the facts behind the issue. Instead, the article simply regurgitated what others have claimed about the comfort women. "The only evidence that the article provided to back up the narrative of forced prostitution was the words of the alleged, former comfort women. The author failed to submit any additional primary source materials. Earlier this year, the Asahi Shimbun apologized for reporting as fact without performing any background checks Seiji Yoshida’s discredited claims that he “forced comfort women into enslavement”. Perhaps the New York Times hasn’t yet learned the folly of reporting without due diligence. "What the New York Times article failed to mention was primary source information, such as the Interagency Working Group’s (IWG) report on Nazi and Japanese war crimes, which it submitted to Congress in 2007. After spending 30 million dollars to go through over 8.5 million newly declassified documents, opened to the public under the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act and the Japanese Imperial Government Disclosure Act, the IWG was unable to find any evidence that gave credence to the claims of forced prostitution by the Japanese government or military. In fact, the report goes on to give an apology to the special interest groups who were eagerly looking forward to such evidence. "Furthermore, “Report 49″ provided by the United States Office of War Information (OWI) in 1944 described the interview of 20 captured Korean comfort women. The report clearly identified them as paid prostitutes instead of sex slaves, and went onto describe how they participated “in sports events with both officers and men, and attended picnics, entertainments, and social dinners”. The primary source documents clearly noted that the comfort women were highly paid prostitutes. "Interestingly, a group of South Korean women recently sued their government saying that U.S. forces in South Korea treated them as comfort women. While the U.S. media immediately responded by saying that they were prostitutes, those same media outlets have continued to refer to those comfort women, who had served the Japanese military, as sex slaves. "Both Japanese and U.S. military bases, during their respective times, had “comfort stations” where men paid for sex with prostitutes. But curiously enough, those same prostitutes became “sex slaves” in name when served the Japanese military. "Perhaps it’s time for both the Japanese and Western media to return to primary source research and to deliver the real story." Michael Yon

It's a complicated issue. I'm a Korean who enjoy jpop, anime and other japanese culture, and I genuinely like Japan. But it still makes me uncomfortable when a japanese friend asks me why Korea's independence day is the same date as Japan's remembrance day(V-J day). I am not saying all that all japanese are like this, but there are people who just don't care about history much, especially the younger generations. Koreans also have this problem when it comes to the Vietnam war, we always talk about how Japan harnessed Korea but little do we care what we did to Vietnam. I think it's not about education, at least not anymore, but about japanese and korean citizenship not being ready to embrace the global era.

I always feel strange when I hear people saying that Japanese schools do not teach about the negative aspects of Japanese imperialism. The reason is because I (a Japanese in my 20s) have actually learned a lot about Japanese atrocities like the Nanjing Massacre and the Comfort Women through my junior high and high school years. If I'm not the exception, the real problem may be the general atmosphere in Japan, in which divisive topics like Japanese imperialism are regarded as taboo.

I'm going to be honest. I do feel slightly annoyed at the lack of knowledge regarding this issue. I think the tension wouldn't be as bad if the Japanese were more aware of what their country did. The ignorance of the wrongdoings of their country is frustrating. The countries who were affected by Germany during WW1 and WW2 don't point any fingers at them because they have shown tremendous growth and reflection while this looks to me, like they're just trying to bury it. China, South Korea and Japan seem to be countries with extremely high pride too.

In German people didn't even dare to mention Hitler or any WW incidents and were deeply sorry even tho it's not them that directly did the wrong things and that to me shows respect and remorse, while Japan, China and Korea were just burying the truth and just showing the good things about their country. I’m Japanese. I noticed many people are writing how children in Japan don’t learn the history so I wanted to write my opinion here. While Japanese textbooks downplay some of the events that happened during the imperial time, I don’t think the content was “whitewashing” nor pro-Japanese. It covers key events with a fairly neutral tone. If anything, we were told this was something we should be strongly ashamed of. Our teacher also showed us a graphic documentary made by NHK, that filmed atrocities committed by the Japanese army in Asia. I can’t speak of other people, because the content of textbooks slightly differ depending on the publisher. But all I’m saying is, we do learn the horrific events happened, including Nanking massacre, Crackdowns on Koreans during March 1st, Korean massacres during Great Kant Earthquakes, the controversies surrounding the comfort women to name just a few. That said, I think we should make more efforts to let the students think more about the history of colonial era with more details, especially the time when Japan aggressively expanded into the Asia Pacific regions and caused a significant damage to the local people. I’m not proud of the war crimes committed during the war, and I’m not nationalist at all. I strongly believe those who suffered need recognization and appropriate compensations. But I do hope people would at least make some efforts to actually look into what we learn at school before making an assumption.

I just hope that the future generations could lead Korea and Japan to become close friends. I think it would be better for the students from both nations to learn history from the same history textbook just like students in France and Germany are doing. Maybe that could help students to learn history objectively.

First of all: Thank you! It was a very good and informative video! My heart was really pounding as I saw this video. One week ago I came back from a trip to Korea, where I came to see a lot and also meet a lot of people. I also lived in Japan for one year and it has become a second home for me during that time. I have both friends in Korea and Japan that I love dearly and I hope I never have to take a side which country I like more. I was literally trembling because this is such a sensitive topic. Growing up as a German I learned about the second Worldwar in every class in every single year of my school years and for many years I hated myself for being German. There is no excuse for the things that Germany and also Japan have done in the last century. As you said the victims remember history very vividly. So as the children of this country the least that we can do is remember what we would rather like to forget. And that is also what I want to encourage Japanese people to do. Learn about the history of our peoples. That is a sign of respect to those countries still remembering their victims. And it will make real conversations possible. I studied history until I wanted to throw up. I pray that there will be no more wars because in a war there are no victors, there are only losers. I hope that you know that I never went easy on myself. Please forgive us. Please let go of the prejudices that you have against us. I won't forget the past so that you can let go of the burden. Please let us not define our future by the past of those who lived before us. Please let us define our future by the love we share today.

“The sins of the father are to be laid upon the children.” ― William Shakespeare Don't listen to big Willie here tho, If you want to hate yourself, i'm sure you can come up with much better reasons than being born in a country with some bad history and a vegan/genocidal dictator. Take a step back and think about what the Germans did, and put it in perspective. First of all, a huge number of people have been doing insanely evil things pretty much everywhere nearly all the time so you are not nearly as unique in evilness as you'd think from what people think. Stalin for example was a much more efficient mass murderer than Hitler but do you see russians hating themselves for it? No. How about Cambodians? The Rwandans? That genocide happened just a couple of decades ago and they probably don't even make a big fuss about it anymore. Why should the Germans be hating themselves after 80 years after the facts? What about the Turkish? They killed off all the Armenians just 100 years ago and almost no one who is Turkish cares about it. Put it in perspective. Just look at our species for example. We most likely have obliterated all other human species that have ever existed. Forget racial genocide, thats childsplay, compared to what we have already done as a species. Denisova hominin, Homo floresiensis, Homo naledi, Homo erectus and the Neanderthals and that's just from our genus. All DEAD and EXTINCT species of our own family tree, the nearest thing we have genetically on this planet to us and we slaughtered them all without mercy. Also around 50% OF ALL large mammals were wiped out by us about ten thousand years ago when we invaded the Americas through Siberia. They had freaking camels there. And not to mention what we are doing right now. We are likely the main culprit to the sixth extinction event of our planet and also ironically the only thing that can prevent it. See, If you look at humans from this perspective, we are all the same and already guilty of the worst crimes possible. But at the same time we are not, even if our ancestors and older generations are.

BH USA, japan, korea have joint military drill frequently in the name of north korea. However, north korea is too weak to be excuses. It aims at china. At least USA aims at china. For example, when USA invaded iraq, Britain, Austrilia, Polland and canada also followed the USA. These countries use this kind of method to show they are best allies of USA, and seek the protection of USA That means one day if china have conflicts with USA. Japan and korea may also be their potential allies or military bases. If USA have military bases in your country, you have no diploma and place to speak against them. Thank you, Hiroko and Asian Boss, for covering this story. I could see that one of the gentlemen being interviewed did not seem too comfortable. I can imagine how many people said no to Hiroko for an interview. Where I was educated, the history books covered the Japanese occupation of many Asian countries which included what happened in Korea with comfort women. Years ago, when I told that such history was not taught to the young generation in Japan, I was somewhat surprised but then again also not shocked because many countries practice revisionist history or they simply don’t talk about it in detail. I think an apology was helpful to acknowledge what happened but I think money won’t cover it. I’m guessing that the perpetrators either went to jail for war crimes and if they didn’t, they probably already passed away. It’s likely that no direct punishment can be achieved. I think it boils down to acknowledgment and sincerity. That can be demonstrated by including the victims’ accounts in history lessons. It should not be swept under the rug. Young people should be able to remember these lessons. Future generations need to be told what exactly happened so it doesn’t happen again. I would also say that the same thing should happen within Korea if they also did similar things in Vietnam. We should not be afraid of the past because it will teach us the sins of our forefathers and we can learn from them to become a better generation. PS: Thanks for sharing the stats, Steve. I think that paints a clearer context of what we are watching. 🙏👍

Yes, many countries practice revisionism. I'm forever grateful to Germany for owning up to its past and apologizing at each opportunity, so it seems they are past that era now. But Japan put off apologizing, did too little too late, and now there are news reports that part of the Japanese government is bringing back the war crimes trials for a "review" (like they want to change the past now, pardon their war criminals?) In light of government denials of wrongdoing, as well as leaving dirty details out of its textbooks, this smells suspiciously like trying to sweep the past under the rug, hoping people will forget.

The more they do that, the more they ensure people remember and continue to hate Japan and bring up the past. Who now brings up in any kind of serious way that the Germany of today is anything like Nazi Germany? That's because Germany was humble and continue to make serious international and domestic efforts to acknowledge what happened and take steps to prevent it happening again. Unfortunately, the Japanese people are too proud. Sometimes that is a good thing, but MOST of the time it is better to be humble.

Pro File simply you can't accuse someone who used paid prostitution service of having raped prostitutes. That's the problem. We should be based on the provable facts if we really want to learn something from the history. You don't understand why we hesitate to apologize. For example, 200,000 women were raped and killed? Where is the evidence? Where are their bodies? Who were they? Why should we accept such a lie and apologize? How could it helpful in pursuing the world peace. I don't think Korean people really want to learn from the history. What a pity. Their propaganda and ignorance are preventing us from looking at the history as it is to see where the real problems and errors were. Our errors and their errors.

I like how open and honest they are, but feel the need to point out a very interesting point, despite the history between the two countries, the past is being brought up to a generation who doesn’t necessarily experience that history in a way that stifle their advancement, so the need for reparations can be debated due to the fact of the level of progress made by Korea possibly overshadowing the damage. Meanwhile in America, there are groups who have a equally disturbing background (if not more) while to this day suffer in the most direct ways for the very same reasons of those yesterday. Which makes matters worse is the fact that independence has never been practiced as much as it’s been spoken of, so these groups not only have not healed from their past, but as a greater consequence, suffers in addiction from the new issues on top of the old.

I am a Japanese Korean. Regardless, I find it hard to label myself as Japanese. I was primarily raised in Korean culture by my mom, who was fully Korean. My parents were divorced so I rarely saw my dad. Considering myself a Korean, I never had a bad experience with Japanese people. I think one of the greatest issues that stem from today's world is that we use others' opinions to cloud our judgments too easily. I want to add that this is a common and inevitable mistake. Thus, I believe understanding history from both sides is crucial to forming an unbiased and objective opinion on this issue. Personally, I think it's important not to discredit what Koreans have been through. However, we shouldn't be locked in a "jail" called history. Ultimately, history repeats itself. For that reason, instead of using this colonization to justify the innate hatred both countries have toward each other. Both should use history as a tool to help innovate and create a better future where there will be amples of mutual gains and successes. This would not only provide benefits socially but also economically. Japan has been one of Korea's greatest trading partners for a multitude of history; therefore it would only be a gain for other economic aspects if both countries started accepting each other. I still find it necessary to argue that this doesn't mean we should forget history. As the man in the video said, history is something we have to live with. Being able to grow from history is the hardest part. Nevertheless, I believe it's possible for both countries to grow from this. I doubt this growth will happen any time soon; both countries still have a rocky relationship with each other, but I hope it happens in the future. A complimentary issue I want to touch on is the matter of "comfort woman." In Korea, I was taught that Japan was the ONLY country that used women for their personal satisfaction and entertainment. I think this example shows that both countries have labeled and manipulated history in a way to patronize their country while shining a negative light on one another. Therefore, I am incapable of classifying Japan as the only country that hasn't educated its citizens about the true history of Japanese colonization objectively and factually. I am certain that both countries would obviously hide or degrade the severity of the issues they have committed in the past. Being totally objective about this issue, this is my opinion as a Korean. Although many might argue that I'm only raising this point because I am Japanese. I want to reinstate that I have never grown up under Japanese culture/influence so I consider myself a Korean. Btw: there might be factual errors in historical information. Please correct me and understand I am not fully educated about this issue :)

There is no comfort women issue. A story made by the anti-Japanese Korean government. If there was a woman who was really brought to the brothell without permission at that time, it's the responsibility of the Korean owner. The Japanese army prohibited prostitution of girls and women who did not agree. If you hate, hate your ancestors. Comfort women are a story that the poor Korean people proposed to the Japanese army. The conscripted labor problem and the Takeshima problem are all fabricated by the South Korean government. All the problems that South Korea is complaining of are terrible are just interpreting and fabricating what Japan has supported. As there is a saying in Korea, "If you repeat a lie 100 times, it will be true." It was thanks to the rule of Japan that we were able to survive without being destroyed by China and Russia before and during the war. If Japan does not spend hundreds of billions of dollars to restore Korea after the war, there will be no Korea now. And even after that, Korean companies have been established with the support of Japanese companies. Hyundai, Samsung, etc., Korea also imitates quite a few various cultures from Japan. It's Korea that is in trouble because the relationship is cut off. There is nothing that Japan has benefited from South Korea. Koreans are complaining to the Japanese government, but Koreans should be grateful to the incompetent Japanese government from the Japanese point of view. If we eliminate all Koreans living in Japan lurking in the Japanese government and the Japanese government becomes decent, they will break off diplomatic relations with South Korea.

That’s why Japanese government have payed additional money and now we hear “money can’t wash all the past sins away”. Also, Japan can't do what Korea is doing to the US because Japan is the reason why US entered WWII. They bombed Pearl Harbor when US was neutral in the war. And during the war, many many US were killed, tortured, experimented on.

3:30 "There has to be some good stuff about Korea, but they never put it on air." I love how he thinks because from the way he said it (or the English translation at least) it sounds like he doesn't _know_ anything good about Korea, but can think intelligently and knows that obviously there must be good things about Korea and how the media shows only negative stuff is obviously fishy. That's how we all need to be. It's very time-consuming to inform yourself about literally every country and every city in the world and even if you did who knows how skewed your information and your mental image of the place and people would still be. But we all have a brain for a reason and can judge what others try to feed us by many factors. He judged what Japanese media portray by the fact that they only show negative things about Korea. He seems to be a healthily wary and alert person. That's great.

First of all, I really like the new format of giving 'stats' at the end of the interviews. That's actually very interesting and keeps things in perspective. I also have to say this is a topic I sadly haven't put much thought into and one I am eager to hear more about in part two. I know it's easy for me as an outsider to shake my head over how little about history the younger generation has been taught over in Japan, but then I stop and think about how little I've been taught about America's history in schools. To the victor goes the history books, if you will. More than anything, it makes me feel impressed that those who didn't know enough to comment on something didn't try to BS their way through and admitted to their ignorance. Everyone around me these days seems more inclined to make things up or fall back on vague and ambiguous statements to fake their way through a topic they don't know much about rather than humbly admit they don't know. It actually increases my respect that so many of them were honest, even if I wish they had be taught more on the topic in class.

Whenever Japan need to come over near by DOKDO area, they have to report to Korean military, other wise it will be taken as a invasion in terms of geography. Dokdo is part of KADIZ and it is being protected by Korean army as well. These kinds of interview cannot reveal what they really think about it as Japanese are quite fake telling their emotions. Though I partially agree with the old guy wearing red glasses. We did horrible things during the Vietnamese war, so does we deserve to apologize to Veitnamese victims. One thing is for sure. Japan is still not admitting about their fault, and trying to hide it as mentioning about fault that Korean did, but they need to apologize about what they have done, and they need to stop beautifying their horrible history.

Thistlejoe Lullaby The Japanese people are the ones who illegally took Dokdo. They went through the procedure in 1905 when Korea as a country was in turmoil and was occupied by the Japanese military. They refused to give it back after being drawn out and Koreans had to take matters into their own hands by claiming it in 1952. The Korean evidence dating back to Shilla period all show Dokdo as Korean land. See documents regarding Korea's 1900 incorporation of Dokdo Island. See Japan's own claims that Dokdo is indeed Korean property (Saito Hosen's "report on oki district). Or the 17th century Japanese map which shows that Dokdo is part of a separate islate from Japanese islates. Despite all this the Japanese government called it a "terra nullius" and seized it. So no. Dokdo is Korean property. Japan, please stop before everyone starts hating you for your greed.

…they keep talking about “the war” but also forget to mention the countless times they stole Korean artisans/craftsmen and cultural treasures from like 14th-15th century as well. The issues Koreans have with Japanese aren’t solely from colonization, though a lot has to do with that as well, but the fact that there’s over 500+ years of a lack of acknowledgment of their wrongdoings and a lack of crediting what is and isn’t theirs.

Just thought I should comment on what the man said about Vietnam war.. Rape happened in every war and it will happen again if war breaks out again in the future. Even American soldiers raped Korean woman when they came to the aid of South Korea. But from my knowledge, what makes what Japan did different is that rape was organized by the government and military on a different scale compared to individual crime committed by soldiers of other countries during the wars. But rape is rape and its a unforgivable crime... As a Korean, and a man, I’d like to apologize and say that I am very sorry to all the victims of Vietnam, and every women who experienced such a pain in their lives. I hope we can all learn from the history, and please remember that we all came from a woman. ❤️.

for me as Japanese, I terribly agree with that opinion that we should learn more history of what we did to Korea. However , I think giving selective education to their citizens is what every countries are doing since they all more focus on teaching their history of how and by whom their citizens were damaged, hurt, invated. In Japanese education, mainly we study the history of WWII with United States. I remembered that I was so shocked when my Korean teacher told us one of the horrible history between Japan and Korea in the class. We shouldn't bring the negative emotion against each other in current society( cuz I do not think that I want American people to be sorry for us about US army killed a lot of our Japanese ancestors) , but we should learn the truth more for our better relationship.
@bleuemoone8710
@bleuemoone8710 3 жыл бұрын
As an American, we are taught about the bad things our country has done as well as the good. Such as Native American genocide, Japanese internment camps, racial segregation etc. The fact is that the scale of Japanese atrocities in WW2 is really unprecedented like the Nazis. I agree that most people alive today shouldn't feel like they are guilty or responsible, because they are not. But at least at a governmental level there needs to be more apologies. And it is concerning when an event not that long ago (about a lifetime) is whitewashed or forgotten. Germany has done a much better job teaching the Holocaust to their citizens to ensure it is never repeated again. The US killed a lot of Japanese, but it was the Japanese who attacked us first. The US firebombing major cities and killing tons of civilians is essentially a war crime and is in no way excusable. Japan threatened every other country in the Pacific region, and soldiers did horrible things to the citizens and enslaved many. Considering the US basically built Japan up from ruins and helped it to modernize, the least Japan could do is make public apologies or acknowledge their own history, and I think a great first step would be properly educating about its past. I think that by doing so countries can better address human rights issues like in China.

I think it's quite interesting how japan in general is dealing with it's past with what they have done during the secound world war. In germany we learn everything about what exactly happened during the war and how it did come to this cruel crimes against humanity to prevent this from ever happening again in our country.

That is one of the reasons why Germany is a leading country in the EU. It's so fuatrating to see Japan doing just the opposite.

Because German caused the world war two times and defeated. Also, US involved in many times about this Nazi and SS issues. Japan did not have Hitler figure yet (maybe Shinzo Abe could?) and US covering up Japanese back ass. It's totally different situation here.

It’s why the Germans are admired and you’ll rarely find a Jew who thinks Germans today are the same as nazi Germany. Japan on the other hand...I suspect it’s because the US nuked them and have been feeling sorry for them for decades so they turn a blind eye to the Japanese.

The problem is, that your history is full of over-devilish myths created by Allies to cover their own war crimes (particularly stalin's, but us nuclear bombing of civilians, British/us bombing of civilians are not much better). This is very sad. History must never be rewritten, but war's victors can do anything they want and never get punished for their crimes.
