We have a RES and she is 21 years old. We do see her sleep in the water and out. She has roam of the house and sleeps under the tank stand for hours too.A basking light is aimed at her daily until she walks away from it. For years, we have noticed that she stops eating around November till February. Is it hibernation? She still is awake and walking around. We still throw a few pellets in her water in case she wants to eat even though she did not eat it. Thank you for your videos!

Does your water temperature stay constant? If not, there’s a chance that her metabolism slows down a bunch if the water temperature gets colder, which will cause her to eat less.
@lilylee5924 Жыл бұрын
Yes, the water temperature is constant in the tank with a heater to maintain at 80 degrees when she is in the tank .she is out of the tank most of the day with room temp of 68 degrees . Do you think that is the cause of less eating?

@@lilylee5924I would say so yes

@@lilylee5924 why is she out of the tank most of the day? Is she able to go back in the tank when she wants to or does she have to wait for you to put her in there?

Some acquitic turtles actually take in oxygen in the water from their rear. So they can stay down in the water pretty much indefinitely if they had to.
@turtleholic Жыл бұрын
Yeah I’ve heard they do that. I thought it was mostly when they hibernate/brumate. Do they do it on a regular basis?

There's an abandoned pool nearby my mom's house or a turtle has lived for over a year. It's just filled with rainwater and grass and leaves basically. I think it's a painted turtle and it's survived the winter some. Which is pretty crazy in New England. You're spend an ongoing debate as to whether it's you try to rescue it because it might be stuck in there but other people say it's territorial and it's been surviving this long but it's probably pretty happy. I think it's a painted turtle although I haven't gotten a super close look It could be a redier and slider. If it's the latter that's an invasive species in my state.
@turtleholic4 ай бұрын
Wow that's super interesting! If I give you my email, would you be able to send a video of what the pool looks like? If the water level is too low for the turtle to leave, that might be an issue. Also, if there isn't anything for it to float and bask on, that might be an issue.

I thought something was wrong at first too, but after some research I found it’s totally normal (and cute)

I rently raised my water level to the top of my 40 gal. Tank for my red eared slider. Previously it was about half full and I had various self made basking areas. I wanted to make the water higher to give her more room but have tried various top basking loft. She hates them and refuses to go up there. I have one there now but she won’t go up there. Question is can she stay in the water. I feel like she may be uncomfortable being in the higher water because she is not use to it. I left rocks and such so she can climb on them and easily get air but probably not sleep like that.
@turtleholic11 ай бұрын
It’s a good question. Eventually you’ll want to find a basking platform that she feels comfortable going on, as going weeks without basking can cause a range of health issues. Is the basking platform that you have now easily accessible from the water? Sometimes turtles will avoid the above the tank basking platforms when the ramp is too slippery or too steep.
@SamiDForever8 ай бұрын
My turtle will only use the basking spot that is seen in this video. I have tried the penn-plax above tank basking, and also a clear acryllic one that is not exactly above tank but it has a back and takes the full width of the tank. He hates them all. I believe it's because he feels trapped and can't get down quickly from any side. With the one in the video, he can get off on either end and also off the side. It's the only one he's comfortable with.

What type of filter should I get my turtle tank? I have a 10 gallon tank?
@turtleholic7 күн бұрын
Hi, you could use this one: amzn.to/4gFn2Hx . I do recommend getting a larger tank at some point, as a 10 gallon tank is only suitable for a turtle that is 2 inches long or less.

Hi I got a turtle. I was told it was a yellow slider so I set up here tank with water and rocks. But after a month her colors more looked like a box turtle. I really need some help trying to figure out what she is. She has one single yellow dot in each square on each side and 3 down the middle. Her head is dark brown, dark brown eyes with single yellow dots on each side.

Hi, it sounds like you got a spotted turtle. Can you google that and see if it matches the description of your turtle?

It’s common for turtles to not bask for the first couple days as they get adjusted to their new tank. If yours still isn’t basking, you can watch this video I did on how to get your turtle to bask: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m565f3-meMmZhpY
