This was very helpful to me as I'm trying to understand exactly what 'abiding in Jesus' truly means and how to go about doing it. Thank you very much!

Abiding is remaining in trust. 1 John is all about abiding/remaining. Falling out of union means falling out of life, too. Only those who die IN CHRIST will be raised to life (1 Thess 4). 1 John 2:24 "Let what you heard from the beginning remain in you. IF what you heard from the beginning remains in you (see Heb 3:6 below) , you will also REMAIN IN UNION WITH both the Son and the Father. And this is what he has promised us (who remain): eternal life." Heb 3:6 - But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God's entire house. And we are God's house, IF we keep our courage and remain confident in our HOPE in Christ. Salvation is by grace through faith in the redeeming sacrifice of Jesus. Trusting anything else than this hope can take us out of union with Jesus even if we drift away from it over time. This is why Paul warns repeatedly not to drift from the message first preached.

I think the point of John 15 is not that WE receive all WE need FROM the Vine (it's not about US at all)...but that we GIVE all that we have in the world sacrificing ourselves, knowing that we are USEFUL to the Vine in order to bear much fruit (leading people to Christ, healing the sick, casting out demons, etc.) and thus bring great glory to the Father. We can't heal disease without His power, but when we abide in Him, and His word abides in us, and we keep His commandment, which is TO LOVE, then we can go into the world and heal the sick and so on. "Did I not tell you that if you BELIEVE you will see the glory of God?" We Christians never see the glory of God, the fruit of miraculous healing, because we don't BELIEVE that He will use US to do it. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy of ours that says "I am not worthy to be used by Him, and therefore He won't use me." Well.......BELIEVE.....that He will use us dull knives, rusty hammers, and bent screwdrivers, and then He WILL use us...so long as we believe that He will, and then we *take action* to SHOW our faith by working hard to manifest HIS glory. Actions prove and perfect our faith...and without our stepping out in courage and TRYING to heal the sick, our faith is useless and might as well not even exist. Our abiding in Jesus isn't for our benefit primarily! It is so that we will have the cajones to GO, LAY HANDS on the sick in the Walmart scooter, COMMAND the disease to go out, and bring the witnesses to faith and all glory to the Father! This is what "bearing fruit" means...and by this God is glorified...and whoever tries to do it is pruned by God to succeed more and more! That's the point of John 15!

After reading your response I would say that the mindset of a true disciple and believer in Jesus Christ is to not look at our weaknesses, but look at God's strength which is what Saint Paul has commanded us and encouraged us to do with his example to us. We should pray for a fresh anointing of the Holy Spirit for that power (Dunamis ).If we truly look down the history road of all the patriarchs and saints they all started with a weakness. God chose them because he chooses the weak to produce his mighty works. It sounds like you know enough of scripture to know what I'm talking about some- real heiness things that we probably would fear to fall into you and rightfully so. That's where 1 John 1:9 comes in if properly applied. But going back to the point you were making I would summarize it this way God is not a respector of persons or things. So if we believe that then we would trust him to do some of the things you refer to which involve the gifts of the Spirit but with the heart set of manifesting the fruit of the spirit. It has to be produced with that type of heartset,not just mere works because on that day many will say Lord Lord Lord but not every one that says Lord Lord Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven because they're motives for doing those things were not according to the will of the Father. They did it for their own self glory. Thanks for stimulating that mind heart response to contribute. It clearly served as a iron sharpening iron to spur each other along so we may abide in Christ together! 🙏

I would encourage you, brother, not to make a text say anything other than what it does. We can only bear fruit if we are abiding in Jesus. It IS about receiving from the source SO THAT we will bear much fruit. God bless.

@@selahchunem8447 I learned recently that all the fruit of the Spirit are a result of trust. We don't try to love, try to be peaceful, try to be patient. We love because we trust that he loved us. We are patient because we trust that God has been so patient with us. We are peaceful because we trust that God has made peace with us and since we have died in union with Christ, we have died to our self-interest so there is no reason to ever be offended or prideful or fight for our rights (turn the other cheek, give your coat and shirt, walk the extra mile). Then after "putting on" these attitudes through trust in Jesus, we act and live. It took such pressure off to understand this. Good trees produce good fruit. It's a natural byproduct of being a good tree (from the good things stored up in the heart, good things overflow!) Hope this blesses you!

To abide in christ is to look to him for salvation only. Not abiding are the forms of not trusting in him: SELF-CONFIDENCE, DOUBT,FEAR,PLEASURE,PRAYERLESSNESS etc. Once we are truly in him the father's duty is to prune us. If that branch has generated it own root system it has in fact cut off itself.
@danielbu2611 Жыл бұрын
@Rafael It does read like that. I'm pretty sure he means "to him alone for salvation" though. At least that is what the verse means about abiding, "remaining in trust".

Do you think that we can go from abiding to then deciding not to “abide” either for a period of time or for the rest of our life? If so what are the consequences for not “abiding” in Christ?
@ross3964 жыл бұрын
@jim we wither like dead branches. We’re thrown into the fire. Not to say we’re throwing into Hell... but we’re gonna get roasted. To not Abide, is to allow something else to truly rule our hearts and pursue that thing more than we pursue Christ.

“spiritual disciplines” sounds suspiciously like “spiritual exercises”

You're religious not spiritual. Your statement is filled with do this and I do this and I do that and so on
