Im in second year of art academy and just spent 3 days to find a book in any library, i even crossed over multiple cities. Even the academy had none. Nobody had no clue about what magic realism exactly was and neither did i. Just came from a video that had 40k views from a girl explaining magic realism but she obviously had no idea what she was talking about. Wikipedia and google are terribly confused in this theme and a lot of stuff is just missing. --- To get to the point: I wanted to thank you because i think i'll pass my exam because of this video!

My name is Parker Gibbons too. I think we're on the same wavelength and you hit the nail on the head with your analysis. I believe that films and stories often have a similar purpose of showing how an emotion or character has manifested through acts of people or especially through acts of One/God/Universe/Source. The specifics highlighted by directors go deeply into detail with every frame of their film in order to illustrate their overall centripetal idea that there is One. Since realizing this, I find myself analyzing every frame of good films in order to understand exactly how filmmakers attempt to illustrate The Voice. Keep up the good work!

I'm not sure whether one can attach magical realism to some movies that you mentioned. For example, in Black Swan, I think, the director portrays the lead's inner condition rather than just painting a layer of magical realism on the story. I believe that one cannot apply magical realism to every story that has some unusual things in it.

It is quite simple. Realism was born in antitheses to romanticism. While the latter depicted the story and settings in Idealized (or as we say today romanticized) way, realism depicted characters and their situations how they would actually be. Hence the notion of objectivity. In romanticism a woman main character could be an Ideal in a pedestal, virginal. In realism, it could be a meretriz or a poor, everyday woman. The magic represents the surreal nature some times reality has. There is so much absurdity going on that there is a sense that anything could happen. It pushes threads situations in which perception of reality are blurred, like child's imagination, dreaming, hallucinations. Or it is simply used as a metaphor to emphasize a real situation. TL;DR magical realism is about using fantasy to emphasize the reality we live in, not to escape it. Like some drugs do, where you don't completely hallucinate, but when it heightens what we experience, giving another point of view.

Going by these different definitions, does that mean a show like Regular Show or Adventure Time can be considered magical realism? Both take place in our world and reality, but there exists an almost-impossible magical element to both.

In my opinion, magical realism isn't so much a genre as it is a style. A science fiction film could be "magically real" as could be a western.

Effacement of the painting process could be easily transferred to effacement of filming process. I guess breaking down the fourth wall or showing the filming equipment doesn't help the immersion into the magical world.

But, your problem in defining magical realism as a genre is precisely the question itself. the question presupposes that genre is a real thing like a box set of geometric shaped holes and all you have to do is put the film in the right hole. No. genres are fluid. further, there is a difference between genre defined by plot, story, textual structures, rhetorics and rhetorical-representational techniques. Just because a film uses a magical realist technique, does make the genre of magical realism. Adding barbacue chicken to a pizza does not convert the pizza to a barbacue sandwich.: There was a fairly discrete genre of magical realism in Latin American Literature. Then the techniques of MR were used in other genres, plots, storylines, to fit other aesthetic and creative purposes, stretching and mixing genres and techniques, rhetorics and styles, to make very hybrid new artforms that will never again fit a geometric square definition of a genre.

'readily acceptable alternative to the harsh realities of life' - in that art may be a happier place to exist than the real world, at all times usually. Often the representation is less acceptable than the dogma and conditions of the world that born it. 'That was magically realist' ' wasn't it just?' so much so nobody wants to look at it. Which then happily for me removes the noun 'escapism'.

I have no idea about magic realism in films etc. but as far as I can tell, magic realism in literature may have two important characteristics, showing the fantastical in ordinary realistic settings as normal in order to, according to Marquez, fight against the constricted, lifeless rigidity of the mind created by scientific determinism or something like that; and using the fantastical to show political, ideological, economic etc. realities in a clearer way than typical realism can, like to emphasize the important themes and stuff, for example, a two hundred year old despot still ruling strong shows how terrorizing tyranny is and how difficult it is to overthrow it. Just my personal opinion.

Anime does Magic Realism very well. Makes since that some recent movies that work in this genre are inspired by them like Black Swan was.

Satoshi kon is my favourite filmmaker and Perfect Blue, as well as his other films Millennium Actress and Paprika are masterpieces. I think animation is particularly good at this genre because we immediately have a disconnect and suspension of belief as it's all a drawing, and also as it's animated reality can be went in ways that would be impossible in regular film
