On this week's episode of #NCFCounterCulture our panel discuss our new publication: "The Long March: How the Left Won the Culture War and What To Do About It." [ our publication may be downloaded free of charge from our website: newcultureforum.org.uk -- Hard copies may be purchased by making a £10 donation also via the website (further details please email: contact@newcultureforum.org.uk) ]
How does culture shape political power? Many Conservatives now fear that victory at the ballot box is not enough. Despite Boris Johnson’s triumph in the 2019 election, they sense that a larger cultural battle has been lost. Some accuse the left of mounting a secret, slow-motion takeover, inspired by the ideas of the Italian communist Antonio Gramsci - the ‘long march through the institutions’.
The New Culture Forum's new book by Marc Sidwell uncovers the truth: a tangled history in which active subversion runs alongside unintended consequences and missed opportunities. Armed with a clearer understanding of the left’s long march, it also reveals new possibilities for fighting back.

* Melanie Philips
* Marc Sidwell

I work in the cultural sector, in education. For the first time in my long life I voted Tory at the last election. What I have witnessed in the last three weeks has left me frightened and despondent. Why? Because I witnessed the utter spinelessness of the response by the Conservative political establishment. Dominic Raab, who I used to have some respect for, now supports an avowedly Marxist organisation! The old line 'folded like a cheap suit' sprang to mind. Foolishly, with their worst results since 1935, I thought that the left had lost the last election. We now have a Corbyn-esque government. I work in the public sector; soon I have to give a presentation at a public forum to answer questions raised by BLM activists as to why we shouldn't pull down statues and rename streets. One error and I am for a very hard time (at best) - working in fear? yep... but I will stand up, though I do wonder why I should. The Tories do not have ten years, they have four, at best. Suggestions - stop reacting get ahead of this. Grow a spine. Don't tinker around the edges; it is far too late. Bold actions to regain the agenda, getting rid of one civil servant at a time won't do it. So, defund the BBC. Axe Tony Blair's Supreme Court. Get rid of Clause 127. Abolish all hate speech laws. The Arts Council - cut it's budget by 50%. Universities - yes, target the Humanities - financial disincentives to do those subjects. They will scream and shot and stamp their feet. Ignore them and in four years time the Tories might have my vote again.

I remember college in the late 80's students were encouraged to take Social Science Courses with promises of financial help from the European Social Fund. We were told that we would still get help even if our future courses were only very loosely related (so encourage to lie to get grants). This was at a time of continuing high unemployment and financial difficulties. There was pushback to many of the ideas being pushed on us as their claims were not backed with any evidence. I think this is were it started. People who disagreed dropped out and those who blindly agreed moved forward.

Melanie Phillips is on fire in this video. She will never appear on Question Time after this. I think the Long March has two threads. The one not mentioned started in Sweden with eugenics and environmentalism. Hitler had contact with them and he was an environmentalist and wanted to get rid of fossil fuel and use hydrogen but he could not get it to work. This came together with the Frankfurt School. MP’s view at the end about not being able to have a discussion are a critical point. I don’t like the division into left and right because nothing is clear cut; it implies one side is right and one is wrong and they will never come together through rational debate. Debates with the intention of finding a resolution to our problems are no longer possible. Parliament is the place for this to happen and all we have is a screaming mob.

I left teaching, because you are required to indoctrinate not educate. Students are then taught to regurgitate for exams /tests. I've taught the so called disaffected teenagers, the harder to teach. I've found the majority of these to have the kind of intelligence missing in the majority of students. They are the individuals. They don't respond to being indoctrinated and having to regurgitate. They need challenging and inspiring. Instead they are thrown on the scrap heap, because the indoctrinated teachers don't know how to reach them and large classes and the curriculum don't give good teachers the time to.

We had news reporters talking about the molten mettle and building 3, the very next day every channel denies the existence of both these things and starts questioning guests with a complete lack of tolerance on both these matters demonizing those who mention them as extremists and instead collectively start aggressively concentrating on completely irrelevant points. Don't think I have ever just agreed with anything stated by the media, to just take everything they say as the truth would completely destroy reality as I know it. I think that someone/body needs to make videos, for all ages, of truthful ( so alternatives) education - which parents can buy as an extension to school teaching and or in order to homeschool in groups. Those making the videos should be authorities in their subjects ie David Starkey - equalling an alternative curriculum.

There's no point people saying "Conservatism is the new counter-culture", if the movement produces no culture. The Gramsci-ites convinced people to turn their back on their religion, nation and history, in exchange for rock n' roll, cool movies, and casual sex. We need to show them that a) that was a bad deal, and b) we can offer them the cultural stuff too. To do this quickly, you'd need to set up a billion-dollar media empire that propagandises the virtues of social conservatism and Judeo-Christian values, perhaps fronted by attractive conservative women and heroic conservative men. Failing that, we can support art and culture (at the same time that SJWs are problematising it), while promoting the virtues of our worldview. And satirising our enemies.

The history departments are indoctrinating their students into postmodernist ways of thinking that are almost entirely anti-western. You can challenge the narrative, but you have to be very subtle, otherwise you’ll be singled out, ridiculed, labelled a ‘racist’ or at least have it implied that your ideas are some how bigoted, called aside and warned that your comments are contravening the safe space of other students, receive bad marks in your essays etc.. Academia is in a sorry state.

I laugh when I am actually at work, I work in a cinema, so most of the staff fall into the part- time ' student ' category, and all they complain about is fascist Tories, and austerity and Tory cuts,no money for the NHS , etc.etc.. They always seem to find enough money to wear premium label clothing , shoes and trainers, and buy expensive fast food, like, twice a day!!! I am 62next week, and from 1979 until 1985 , was a Tory party member,!! When John Major showed himself to be pro- European and believed in Big Government , I did not renew my membership!! At the last election a local party worker came to canvass my area, and had found my name in the pre- technology records that I may be a Conservative supporter! So it had taken the Tories 30 + years to re- establish contact! Most of the men whom I helped on a local Tory Committee, linked to Ayr Conservatives have since died! I was a keen 21years old back in the day!! Most of the other party members had already retired! So I just vote now, and as people keep saying to me, Why would anyone vote Tory if you are a working - class low income person!! The older I become, it gets more difficult to explain to people that I believe in free enterprise, private ownership, and free speech , and the ability to live ones' life without state interference, that only being necessary if one is doing something illegal!!! Anyhow ,I watch most of your videos, and have started watching 'Reasoned' with Darren Grimes!😎

Thanks again Peter for another sterling discussion. I totally agree with all your guests and i'm a contemporary of Melanie. I have only in recent years become clearer in identifying what i'd only sensed about the decline of values over the past 30-40 years, even in Australia. But i did sense that decline and disparagement when i was in the UK for a year in 1975. I worked as a trained nurse-'nursing sister'/RN (shows the decline in those terms even) in London and then as a barmaid in an hotel/salmon fishing retreat in Perthshire and i recall coming to believe how the decline of the aristocratic elements were despairing not for ego tripping but for 'values' and 'culture'. Can we stop calling those darn 'elites' elites - for they are nothing of the sort. All the quiet of which Melanie and the 2 good men, Marc and Rafe, spoke re the political leaders has been something i have been puzzled by. I understand something of psychology and fear and how the captives can come to 'love' their guards, but really with so much brilliance in 'our shared past', which in quantum terms, is ever-present, we must demand that those 'in power' in the Conservative realms speak out with some Bulldog Eloquence! That 'Red Wall' will really topple if not! BEST OF LUCK, HEALTH AND SUCCESS.

Start by telling the truth about Marx. See Theodore Dalrymple, Our Culture, What’s Left Of It: In Marx “we enter a world of infinite bile - of rancor, hatred contempt - rather than of sorrow or compassion.” - Theodore Dalrymple, Our Culture, What’s Left Of It. “As you read the Manifesto, a ghostly procession of catastrophes seems to rise up from it, as from the witches’ brew in Macbeth.” “The Manifesto makes no mention of individual life. For (Marx) there are no individuals, or true humans, at all.” “It is no wonder, then, that Marx speaks only in categories: bourgeois, the proletarian. Why study a man, when you know Men?” “He was notoriously scathing about all would be practical reformers. Only he knew the secret of turning the nightmare into a dream. There is no need for other parties, let alone individuals with their own personal quirks.” “Where Turgenev (in Mumu) hopes to lead us to behave humanely, Marx aims to incite us to violence.” “The Communists openly declare that their ends can be attained only by forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions.” - Dalrymple, Our Culture, What’s Left Of It Intellectuals give Marx a pass in criticizing Communism. They never bring up the damning phrase against it that is generally accepted, “the ends justify the means.” It’s as if they are too sophisticated/intelligent/knowing for what resonates with the “contemptuous” masses.

I am an American and also an Anglophile. I've crossed the Pond x3 to visit Scotland and England. It truly breaks my heart to see this fantastic civilization that gave so much to the world being pushed aside by complete IDIOTS. Just as here in America, the so-called education system does nothing but indoctrinate. I feel fortunate I am old enough to have been spared much of that garbage. High school was a joke, 4 wasted years. My real education came later when I read history myself. Only recently did I become acquainted with Scruton and Starkey. Their analyses are brilliant! They cut through the crap and examined facts just as our American intellectual Thomas Sowell does. If the UK and the US, which I think have the strongest wills, do not maintain Western values, the future of the world is indeed bleak. Individual freedoms will be snuffed out. I do enjoy forums like this on the internet. Cheers from a black American conservative

Socratic questioning is the answer. Most people have been taught to regurgitate. Question them about their ideas. This will reveal their lack of foundation and understanding. Don't counter attack. You don't even have to say what you think. Continually phrase things as questions telling them you want to learn. Make them think about what they are saying and why. Make them use the space between their ears. They will soon realise how little they know. That's when it's your turn to teach them.

Denise, that would work if they would sit still and actively debate. Instead any question is dismissed as they don't like the answer. Either way I will continue to counter indoctrination. I have a friend I have been working on for 4 years (Brexit) our friendship has changed, my respect for her lessened slightly, but I maintained our friendship. She is just starting to show shoots of new growth. I have been very slowly snd gently dosing her with red pills and it is begining to work. Slow, steady march.

@@deniseberesford584 I applaud your patience. I am UK based but my sister is entrenched in US academia, living and breathing the safe space indoctrination for several years. I was too slow to reach her and now she is firmly entrenched in her way of thinking. Incredibly emotional, moving the goalposts and commits basic logical fallacies in her argumentation. Coupled with a sense of moral and intellectual superiority (she's has a humanities PhD from Harvard) its a closed loop, she won't even entertain a test of her most basic axioms without dismissing it or cutting off communication. I wouldn't have believed modern censorship could work in the age of the Internet, but it turns out if you train your brain not to look for any counterargument (or dismiss is as hate speech) then you will only ever re inforce your worldview. Im truly at a loss even how to begin the road to conciliation. All I can say to those who see signs of it, don't wait until its right in front of you. Open up channels of communication, hey we might learn a thing or two ourselves from the far left, but certainly don't allow this polarisation policy to continue unabated. Its vile and insidious, encourages an attitude of obfuscation and division (while rather unironically preaching transparency and tolerance).

Melanie is absolutely correct the Long March has been active for decades, I saw it and was totally shocked as teacher from industry when I started teaching in Derby and Nottingham. So is Marc Sidwell that the Long March has been succesful and is here 'now'. Having served in the RAF and learnt about the great amount of money, time and effort spent in 'defending' against the communist threat but then see our education system effectively promote communism. I simply could not come to terms to see books like 1984, Brave New World and Animal Farm not being on the English curriculum let alone not being in the library. I was also disciplined by the headmaster for having some copies which I bought my self so that my Year 10 Pastoral Group could take away and read. At that time I wrote to many senior MPs even Kenneth Baker the Minister for Education about the blatant left wing indoctrination I was witnessing in DerbyShire and Nottinghamshire schools and got no reply what so ever. Even the National Curriculum where I was the IT/Technology Coordinator 'could not believe' the left wing ideas, materials, books and ways of teaching which might as well had come right out of the Chinese Red Brigrade manifesto. This country and it's people were sold done the river by traitorous politicians who threw away every thing this country fought for in WW2 and so many died for. In the end the disgust I felt being part of this Long March, I left a job I loved and was good at. Now 40 years later I see around me the madness of our Adultchilds in their total lack of understanding 'factual' history, a wish to destroy this country and it's people - total and absolute MADNESS !!

It started in the 1970's I used to adore history as a young pupil. I read everything about History from The Greeks, Ancient Rome, King Alfred, to Hereward The Wake, to King John and The Magna Carta.Then, I enter Comprehensive school. Suddenly my interest in history dies, as I have to study 'The Chinese Long March', The Troubles In Northern Ireland, The Suffragettes, The History Of Slavery. Subjects that I (as an eager 11 year old), couldn't remotely relate to, found boring, and certainly subjects that destroyed any sense of history and patriotism within me from then on. Now I realise it was all planned. I was being programmed. It didn't influence me greatly, because I started reading and self educating myself. The point is, Cultural Marxism works; and it saps the morale, and destroys every moral virtue we have as human beings. It is a deadly cancer and takes decades to cure, and you have start on future generations to come, because the souls of the ones now are already lost.

Sadly there’s a salient reason why most, legacy-conscious ‘conservative’ politicians seem so disinclined to tackle the rampant ideological-left skew in the civil service and national institutions: fear of becoming a pariah and thus crucially all but _unemployable_ post-political career. Indeed, one only need look across to Nigel Farage who would otherwise be an asset to most corporate boardrooms - especially given his private sector pedigree. But Farage is now a heretical figure and few companies would dare appoint him to some cushy board position for fear of the inevitable Leftist backlash. The vast majority of the modern Right then are just too scared of being cast into the wilderness post-political career, branded forever as ‘controversial’ (at the very least) should they deign to rock the proverbial boat. That’s why most have expediently devolved into decidedly small ‘c’ conservatives, and both Britain and democracy has undoubtedly suffered for it.

Once again so refreshing to tune into these discussions which are not available elsewhere. But still important to acknowledge that much of the old ways simply had to go. There is a tide running which will no longer tolerate leaving affairs to a patrician few. No Tory is going to put himself in a Canute position ordering this tide to recede. But do these forces, radical as they now seem, really lead towardsMarxism or Anarchy.? My view remains that in the future no party will be electable unless it occupies what we now call the centre right.

It's crazy how far academics have gone, and I'm talking about a hard science discipline. Everyone buys into all the mainstream new cult ideas, without question, if you question any of their cherished ideas you are faced with rage and anger.
