Hi, Dr. Martin! I'm still in high school, now entering 9th grade. During the previous academic year, I was set on becoming a neurosurgeon. I don't know how it happened, it just happened. I'm a really curious kid and I really wanted to know more about different organs, especially the brain. I'm still 13 but my passion for this field has been burning up ever since. I'm learning in advance and definitely getting all the exposure I need. There are a few neurosurgeons in the Philippines though, unlike in other countries so I can't really reach out to anyone. I have been watching these kind of videos and really hoping to come across a local neurosurgeon. My parents are very supportive but they keep asking if I will change my mind about this. I know it takes a very long time but I know it will be worth it. I'm very dedicated and I'm open to making mistakes in order to learn more. Your videos serves as my inspiration. Thank You. I hope to come back to this video as a medical student or a resident. ;))

We have all heard the memes and the stories of Neurosurgeon lifestyle and their rigorous lifestyle they go through via their residency. In your experience as an Attending in academics do the stories hold true or is it just too much of a multi variable situation with every circumstance being different ? BTW thanks for your time out of your busy day, The videos have been good especially this one and Brain fluid leak ! All the best & success for you and your family these holidays & beyond !!!

Great Video Dr. Rutkowski. Thank you for your advices. I have a question, how an IMG can get involve in neurosurgery clinic experience or be eligible for research in US. Which is the profile the IMG must have? (Not residency but more specifically for clinical rotation and research rotation in USA). Again, thanks for your videos. Your youtube videos are getting better everyday. These videos are great inspiration for continuing the grind and fighting for reaching that goal someday. Happy Thanksgiving. Greetings from Ecuador.

As a medical student at a school without a neurosurgery department, do you believe that working with private practice neurosurgeons in the area can be as beneficial as working with academic based surgeons? Do LOR from these physicians “hold less value” than academic surgeons?
@martinrutkowskimd37093 жыл бұрын
I think if you have meaningful experience with them (not just shadowing, but actually working alongside them on rounds, the hospital, OR, etc), then their letters may be helpful. But it's tough to beat the support of a neurosurgeon with clout in an academic department. I think that should always be your primary goal.

This is fantastic! What are your thoughts on taking off time for research AFTER medical school, though? Maybe undertaking a PhD? I’m in an undergraduate MD program, so I can’t really participate in graduate-level research. Would it be worth the time to do so after I graduate, but before I apply for a residency?
@martinrutkowskimd37093 жыл бұрын
That wouldn’t be a good year to take time off. I think programs would prefer to see research done earlier, especially because it can take a while to publish.
