He told me that he used to train with GSP helping him with the boxing side of his game. He said that GSP is, by far, the strongest man he ever knew and he described his strength as something unreal. I totally agree with the idea of training for what you're going to do. I never spend more than 45 min in the gym, anything I need to accomplish can be done in that amount of time. Only exception would be for endurance athletes, obviously they are training to compete over long periods of time.

Great vignette. I’m sure my experience is like most people’s. I dabbled in martial arts years ago, so been watching MMA from the early days. From the second I first saw GSP in the Octagon years ago, it was abundantly clear that we were looking at a rare individual. More than any fighter I’ve ever seen, he made me really pay attention. Despite all his fanfare I still think he is underrated. Georges had a knack of making some great fighters look mediocre (Koshcheck, Nick D, Shields, Conduit - off the top of my head). And even the trolls will have to concede that he fought the toughest guys in the division. So intelligent, athletic, methodical and scientific. Watching him train with his gymnastics and other oddball stuff showed a man on a mission. He would turn his weaknesses (BJJ and wrestling) into strengths through disciplined training to become elite in everything he did. And he’s a hell of a nice guy, to boot. Guy is an F-ing Samurai. Chael, love listening to your thoughts.

Prime welsterweight GSP could beat any welterweight today and probably for the foreseeable future. He was the most well rounded with strengths in the most impotant areas (wrestling and striking from a distance)

@Macx2046 жыл бұрын
Bebolife GSP is still better than Woodley and not to mention GSP and Woodley are pretty much the same age so it’s not like Woodley is some young dominant champion the only reason anyone other GSP has touched the 170 belt is because GSP vacated the title if GSP stuck around and didn’t leave for 4 years he’d still be Champ and honestly he still technically is the true Welterweight champ right now anyways.

GSP goat. Now it makes sense how he manhandled Bisping. Even Chael had trouble with him. I will say this, GSP is a very analytical thinker. Chael, can you tell us who got the better of the exchanges next time you talk about sparring or grappling. If not that's fine, I'm just curious. I guess this was more of a workout, so you felt no need to elaborate, but it would be nice to get an idea just to satiate my curiosity.
@deridivisstar8846 жыл бұрын
Chris Dean , thank you good sir. That makes sense to me. I think it's funny how Chael talks about not wanting to disrespect GSP in his gym all because of some strange honor code. But hey he is a fighter, I'm just an analyst.

I knew he was going to mention his grip strength. It's the same thing everyone points out. They always say he's a lot stronger then they thought he would be and he has a inhumanely strong grip that when he wraps his arms around you it feels like your ribs or back is going to fracture. I've only ever wrestled with 1 person where I felt like that from. He was my teamate, and I hated sprawling with him. Guaranteed to have sore ribs and back the next day.

That was Bruce Lee's philosophy also. He would tell the guys he trained, if they were kick boxers or grappling to not go all out all the time. We did that in high school football, Kenpo, we never went all out. You avoid a lot of injuries that way. I watch these guys on Ultimate fighter and I know you don't have a lot of time to train, but I see many guys get hurt on the show. And yeah, we would work on different strikes, etc. in Kenpo also, until we got it right. It promotes longevity also, as you get older, warm up more, cool down more, don't go all out every day.

1:35... And I come out and theres GSP. and he's got his gi on and his belt tied.....This cracked me up because Chael always sounds like he's taking a dig, especially not being a fan of traditional jiujitsu training. GSP is such a great guy he almost feels bad for trying to say anything negative.

Seriously. The best story teller in MMA world. I don't know anyone better. This gangster keeps my attention till the end of the story, every story.
@tactrix1h4 жыл бұрын
The reason why GSP is so good is because he trained that way, and not just him but if you look at the tippy top of every sport and every caliber throughout everything you'll see that the best always train every aspect of their game until they get every detail right. Why? Because that's what you have to do to see the entire field, to see all the mistakes, to see all the cracks, to learn why everything does what it does. And only then can you get to that level and becomes that good.
