All kinds of ways to load and deliver wood! Dump trailer is what works for me. In our state a dump truck is considered a commercial vehicle so insurance and loans are way too costly for a side hustle! Dump insert might be your solution. Good stuff Phil👊🏻

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years to all the Wood Hounds!!! We just picked up a 7x14 5th wheel with 4 foot sides pulling with a Ram 3500.. but my favorite way is to call in a 40 yard bin and let them deliver 6 cords at a time..

I use a 1 ton dump truck that works well but it is my only “truck” so when we want to go somewhere with the family and need a truck there is no room. Ideally I would like your setup, a regular truck and a dump trailer(one with a good battery😂). Have a great one Phil👍👍

Nice video Phil! We have a dump trailer but we don't do very many deliveries. I've often thought that a small pickup dump truck would be handy but it would probably sit more than it gets used, at least for me.

If u have a big enough dumptrailer pump box u can run 2 deep cycle marine batteries in parallel to get way more dumps per charge. I always bring a marine battery and jumper cables in my truck bed on deliveries to make dumps fast and easy. I just trickle charge it everyday in the garage where it stays 40-55 all winter. Truck craft makes aluminum dump inserts that are built to last. I've been looking for one for my truck 6.5ft box. But i think getting a smaller dump trailer like 6x10 with high sides would be better for 1,2,or 3 facecord deliveries. Had a 5x10 deckover dump years ago but it rusted apart so fast. Have a 7x14x4ft 2015 load trail but its also falling apart but its made over thousand dumps since we got it 6 yrs ago. Gone thru 6 14 ply tires on it already. Hoping to sell enough wood this winter to get a new 7x14x4ft high side trailer this spring
@AllenFamilyFirewood

I think today I will be buying either a jump pack or extra long set of jumper cables . I hear ya on the tires we just had to do the log trailer . The price of new trailers is crazy or any equipment for that mater . My truck body is aluminum an the dump trailer is galvanized so I’m gona keep with buying stuff that don’t rust out after 6 yrs .

It’s nice to have both. I’ve got a 14X7 dump trailer and just got the dumper dog insert as well. But with accumulating more stuff there is always more problems. Everything I own needs tires or a battery or an oil change or a tank of fuel. Lol. It’s always something. But my dogs are old and haven’t ran off if awhile so I got that going more. Lol.

@ I really like the dump insert so far. I’ve had it for a couple months now and haven’t had any trouble with it. I use it to deliver single ricks and then I also split out of it. Load the roads in it with skid steer and leave tailgate shut. Similar to your hopper feeder.
@bucklanders5946
@bucklanders5946 21 сағат бұрын
First of all, I have watched several firewood videos on KZbin. From what I have seen, you have the best setup, from your bucking pit, gathering it with your rake bucket, dumping it in the hopper, straight to the splitter, then the conveyor, with the final trip to the trailer to be stacked. Like any process, there is always room for improvement. However I understand the finances that goes in to setting up a perfect system. For bucking your logs, it would be nice if you had a mini excavator with a narrow bucket and a thumb to hold your logs rather than using the forks. Then it would be nice if you had some kind of wire wrap system for bundling. Then you could bundle directly from the trailer, and put the bundle on the pallets to be stored away for drying or shoved into a kiln. That would eliminate the palletizing of loose wood, then having to move it at a later date to be bundled. Again you and Karen are doing a fine job. At least I'm impressed.
@AllenFamilyFirewood
@AllenFamilyFirewood 20 сағат бұрын
Thanks . Sure would be nice to have an excavator I know it would speed things up . We are experimenting with bagging green wood this winter as like you said it saves one whole process.

Hey Phil, when I was delivering wood like you do, I built gates in my trailer like you have on the back of your trailer in half cord intervals also had a one cord trailer that I built a double swing gate in the middle of that one to It worked good but like anything something always messes up every once in a while then I started getting real busy and a lot of the places I couldn’t get in with a trailer so I just went to one ton dumps and I just have a half cord mark on the inside of my body so I can deliver half cord, but like you say everything don’t always go as planned also food for thought. I always had a spare battery in the back of my pick up and a set of jumper cables in case something happened to the one in the trailer you two have a great weekend and be safe Lee Hillsgrove Trucking signing off 👍

Dana an I have talked for yrs about having a gate in the middle to split the load . Having a divider would pay for its self in one season . I sell very little wood now. I live in an area where everyone has or sells wood. The bulk of my deliveries are 1/3 cords. I have a 7x14 dump trailer for full cords and hauling logs but it can be a challenge to get into some places. I think a SRW flatbed dump is the best option. Put side boards on for delivery, run without if you want to hauls some logs or anything else.

I looked at the Pierce Arrow Factory bed dump kit site. It seems to be a real company with real people based it Texas. Their kit is about $1700, but they do not list applicability to a Chevy newer than 2017. You can tow, you will have to have the receiver shortened and get a longer ball hitch. If you stick with the factory bed they are easier to back up than the flat beds that are wider than the truck. This would most likely be good for face cords or half cords which you are set up for, and probably full cords. Depending on the bed design you might need to add a 2 inch square tube frame to the bottom of the bed, or depending on whether you just cant squeeze the hydraulic in, a four inch subframe to jack it up enough for the hydraulics. Still cheaper than buying a bed. I would add some tin to the inside of the bed to make it look like the hopper. Not sure if Dana would have the time or the inclination to take this on for you, but Pierce Arrow does have their phone number on their web site.

Merry Christmakka to all and a prosperous and healthy New Year. This past summer my 88 Chevy one ton developed engine issues and after 3 mechanics tried to resolve the issue, I sent it down the road. Delivering with a 7' x 10' with sides for full cords and my 5' x 8' for 1/2 cords. We get a good amount of wood donated by home owners that we will buck up and the 7 x 10 is a low boy and is much easier to load. Like your comment cranking out a load. Apparently Karen didn't edit. Phil, great video. I was watching you dump & it didn’t sound like it was going to make it up high enough & guess what it didn’t. If you want to invest in a dumper probably purchase new unless you know the previous owner of one. There is an old saying, you get what you pay for, that is also true about Harbor Freight. Buy something you want that is good & don’t give your tax dollars to the Government. As Joe @ OWB would say, HAVE A GREAT DAY.👍 Oh, Sorry to hear Blue likes to travel around.🐶 Happy New Year. The biggest issues with dump inserts is they rot out after 5-10 winters . The hydraulics seem to hold up a there a cheep fix if something does go wrong . Batteries always go bad at the worst time. I use dump trailers as well. 5x10 for facecord and 2 facecord deliveries and 6x12 for cord deliveries. I get very few deliveries over a facecord at a time. I don't use the bed on my truck for deliveries. I keep my fuel cans and saw oil at the back with a strap through the handles to bed tiedown points. Most of my customers supplement their heat with wood, use it in burn pits, or for cooking. You may want to invest in a 20 ft set of jumper cables (I need to take my own advice!). My trailers are almost a year old and haven't had battery issues yet. Find an old elcamino for Karen to use for deliveries. Easy to reach the wood from the side. 😁👍

But if I was, a small 1 ton dump truck would be what I’d be looking for. The insert would be a good thing for you. Cause Karen could also deliver the bundle wood in the summer. As she takes the bundles out she could raise the dump to get the bundles to slide to the back. She wouldn’t have to get in the truck to get them out. Same as when you’re stacking wood. Get the wood to come to you. Easy to get out of the dump. Any way, I’m sure you’ll figure something out. Have a great day team. 👍🏻👍🏻👋👋

The power of video, Noel…Phil made this video prior to the snowfall. We had 5 inches on Christmas Eve so it’s white here now. We’re thinking the dump insert might be the best way to go for us, we agree it could be used in multiple ways. Hope you had a great Christmas and looking forward to a great New Year!

We just got him from the pound 2 weeks ago an so far he’s taken me on a few excursions looking for him so now he has a 30 ft rope attached with a stick tied at the end . That should fetch him up if he heads out through the woods again so I’m not spending hrs looking for him . 90% of the time he’s great an stays in the wood yard but if he gets wind of something off he goes .

I am currently looking for another way as well, but some of the driveways I back into are super small, and the truck alone barely fits..

I’ve studied this a lot an them dump inserts sound like the way to go . Plus you can still haul a trailer with the insert in the truck .new ones are out out of our price range so it will probably be a used one if we can swing it come spring . I also think with tall enuf sideboards a half cord is no problem maby even a full cord but I’m not sure .

Phil I heard about this guy in Sebago, Maine. I heard he was pretty good with hydraulics. I wonder if he would be any help turning the F250 into a dump bed truck? If the wifey ever wraps up the LLBean gig, she could stay and split on the Axis while you go deliver. Just a thought. You'll figure it out. You always do, lol.

Isn’t there a way to mount something similar to live deck trailer in the pick up?

I’m not sure maybe a sander with a wide belt would work and just cut the end off so the wood will come out . Now ya got me thinking .

Did I hear you mention anything about leaving Karen in the woodyard producing firewood while you do the deliveries with what you already have?

This is Karen…I can split as long as the tractor bucket is full. If he can deliver really fast than that would work great! lol. I know, I know… 😂

You figure the dog likes deer Phil? Just wondering...did your mom n dad deal in firewood sales too or maybe Karen's? Hope your dog is ok. We used a pickup truck back in the day. My dad and I I mean. You have a great set-up. 😊

We just got the dog from the pound 2 weeks ago so he’s not used sticking around yet . My family had huge greenhouses that took 150 cord of wood each yr to keep heated . So we wasn’t in the wood business but we sure spent a lot of time going in the woods to get that much a get it cut a split . We also keep all of our homes heated with wood an that took another 35 cord of wood .

It is red oak. It drys slower than any other wood, that’s why we split it small. It speeds up the drying process a lot

"Sounds like Karen".... now that's funny! 😂 We use dump trailers, or I'll just load a tote onto the truck, then throw it out of the tote. (If it's a small order and difficult spot to back into) oh yeah.... stupid dog😂

That’s the plan right now . Sounds like the dump inserts are the way to go . The kits to make your truck body tip work great but you can’t haul a trailer behind them .

That would work good but when ya add up the cost of buying a one ton insurance registration gas and all the up keep I think it woukd be cheeper to just spend 4 k on a dump insert . In all reality we only do about 35 half cord deliveries each yr so I can’t go to crazy spending .
