Can't believe 1963 was ONLY 10 years from this performance when the British Invasion was in full force. Special thanks to Gerry and the Pacemakers for performing live in Oakland, CA (at the Oakland Auditorium) during the 1960's. I believe they were the only "invasion" band to do so

Very rare to see Gerry and the Pacemakers playing these songs live. How Do You Do It when played live here is already 10 years old. I think this band folded in the mid 60's so this 1973 performance is ultra weird.

This is one of TWO appearances Gerry made on the Midnight Special. The other should be coming up soon

This is an interesting video because you don’t run across many videos of Gerry and the Pacemakers or Gerry Marsden singing after the 60s ended. Even seeing him with longer hair is fairly rare. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him with hair this long. The only thing that felt a bit odd about this was that they weren’t singing new songs in this 1973 performance, they were still singing old songs…which looked a bit silly. It pretty much said, “This is all we’ve got!“ It would be like seeing The Beatles in 1973 and they come out and sing, “I Want to Hold Your Hand”. Umm…no, that doesn’t work. Oh well, even so…I still loved this! 😊

Some artists are able to continue their career as a "legacy act". Basically what Elvis did throughout the 70's. If you still got an audience looking for nostalgia, more power to you.

We saw Gerry in Skegness Butlins not long before he died. He was great, and had the whole room singing along. Class is permanent, and it didn't matter the size of the venue. He always came across as a nice man, and a top performer.

I saw him about ten years ago in Niagara Falls, Ontario and his voice was still great. His back up band then had been from Badfinger (what was left of it). Met him afterwards and he was genuine and friendly. Told him I was in the original Cavern in the 60's and got a big hug! I believe this song was rejected by The Beatles and he took it to #1.

How Do You Do It was their 1st UK No. 1. I Like It was their 2nd UK No.1. You’ll Never Walk Alone became their 3rd UK No.1. The first band to have their first 3 records go to No.1. in the U.K. Frankie Goes To Hollywood were the next one’s to do it. George Martin made The Beatles record a version of How Do You Do It but they loathed the song. They refused to have it put out as a single and it remained unreleased until The Anthology albums.

Does anybody know if the backing band is the original pacemakers but they look a little too young to be the original hit makers and there was a chubby guy in the band that doesn’t seem to be there

None look original. His brother used to play drums and he's not there. Les Maguire played keys and that doesn't look like him. Les Chadwick bass doesn't look like him either.

I don't know why Marsden continued to perform this unbearable fluff long after the heyday of the British Invasion. Both songs sucked then, and they hadn't aged well by the time this performance took place. The group actually had a couple of really good tunes in their arsenal.. the moody "Ferry Cross The Mersey" and the upbeat "It's Gonna Be All Right", the only Pacemakers hits that come close to standing the test of time. ("Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" ain't bad either.) This would've been a much more enjoyable set if Gerry had dug out those gems instead of these lame clunkers. Another downer: Not a single original Pacemaker aside from Marsden himself is in this band. His brother Freddie was the founding drummer, and a quite skilled one at that. All told, this video does nothing except give the British Invasion a bad name, which it doesn't deserve. I guess you had to be there to appreciate the magic of that era.. and I was there, thank God.

I’m so glad the British Invasion is over and we can get back to some real vocalists and quality tunes, instead on these nursery rhymes
