I'll never forget the first Sikh man i met in person. of course i had seen men wearing traditional Sikh clothes on TV, but i always though they were muslim. this is a very common mistake where i live because we have almost no Muslims or Sikhs at all. At any rate, i met a SIkh man at a 7/11 where he was working as a cashier. he has to be one of the most pleasant and generous man i've met. i loved talk to him and he never had anything negative to say really about anything. And on one very drunken visit to 7/11 my friends and i asked him something about Islam, assuming he was Muslim. he explained he was Sikh and told us a bit about what that means. He did pronounce it as "seek" though. i had never even heard the word before, and i had to look it up later to learn more about it. If i was born with no religion and i had to pick one now, it would very likely be Sikh

Thanks. When I was younger I always heard seek but now I seem to be hearing sick. But I'm also in a different country now, and even the commercials say Nis-sawn, whereas in the other country they say knee-sawn. I had a co-worker named Suchitra, and English speakers were afraid her pronunciation sounded too much like Soo-sheet-tra (sheet thinking excrement) , so when we weren't calling her doctor, it was changed to Soo-chee.
@JamesLamb Жыл бұрын
I think we mostly called her Dr., but she did want to be less formal among co-workers. We did always use Dr. for the head of the department.

sikh here. it's NOT seek. it's SIKH. "seek" came to be because of non-sikhs' misinformed/incorrect pronunciation - you shouldn't mispronounce it to tailor it to non-sikhs'. teach them how to say it properly therefore they won't automatically think you're "sick."
@ajooni61544 жыл бұрын
I agree and pronounce it as you do
@PRINCEBABYBOY30511 ай бұрын
So it's not seek or sik? How do you pronounce it?
@inspire24x9 ай бұрын
@@PRINCEBABYBOY305 similar to "sick," just with an aspirated H at the end.
@kaurm222 жыл бұрын
The word sikh actually comes Sikkhī which means to learn, which is closer to the pronunciation "sick" not seek. I have never heard the pronunciation seek until i was older from non-sikh people. Yes you can call anything really anything you want but it does not make it what it was supposed to be originally. And yes we all have been made fun of for calling it sick cause idiots exist everywhere.

It’d be fair to say that half of the people saying ‘seek’ say it that way because they have no idea that it’s wrong, my past self included
@mrexpress80022 жыл бұрын
You cannot say it either way. Sikh is pronounced as sick and not seek.
