I'm no fast reader and that's okay, I enjoy it all the same and that's what counts. Plus I mainly read in English and that's not my main language, so that slows the process even further. On audio books, I once did both. Listened to "Will save the galaxy for food" while reading along on my e-reader. That was a pretty fun experience!

I like listening to audiobooks on walks etc, an idea would be to pick one of your favourite books to start with and simply train your focus. For me it is a great way to practice listening comprehension and pronunciation as well.

16:20 Nailed it! That’s exactly what I do - wash dishes and listen to audio. I am a audio learner. When I hear someone’s voice I remember it 10xs more than if I read it. I love audiobooks and I’m so thankful or audible! I think I learned the skill from listening to AM radio and podcasts. Teaches your brain to focus and think at the same time.

I remember in my teenage years when I thought I had to read fast just because I thought I NEEDED to finish a book fast and that ended up being one of my biggest mistakes. My comprehension was not good and I ended up being burned out. I stopped reading for more than 5 years. Things now have changed, and I learned to read for pleasure and at my own pace. So bottomline is, don't pay attention to your reading speed, just keep reading consistently and enjoy it

I used to read a lot when I was little then stopped reading in middle school, started back my junior year and couldn’t even retain my attention on a book. Took me like months to finish a book, then I dived headlong into reading, gained my speed and longevity. Reading for 3-5 hours a day now. Glad I got back into reading.

Great video Mike, thank you so much for the shout out. I don't know if I read faster. I just put in the time. Also audiobook is great to mix in with reading a physical book. When you have to do mow the lawn, doing dishes, taking the bus I can audio without being interrupted. But I prefer reading myself as I'm faster than audiobooks.

I read every free minute on every possible format: physical, digital or audio. Sometimes audiobooks work better then a physical book or vice versa. And life is stressful enough so anyone should enjoy his hobbies in his own pace.

Just a random comment: I grew up about a 5 minute walk from Stephen King's house in Bangor, Maine. You don't see him out and about much but he's very respected within the community for his philanthropy, including building a baseball stadium to host youth games.

For a long time, I could only listen to audiobooks because my anxiety condition made it nearly impossible to sit and focus on a book. Now I enjoy both. I think readers get a different experience from listening or reading. For my favorite books, I own both book and audiobook. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on audiobooks. Funnily enough, like ravenbellebooks, I'm doing chapter-by-chapter videos on The Wheel of Time too. Mostly because I'm a slower reader and it'd be boring waiting for my reviews on them. It also frees me up to read smaller books during the month so I can at least get some reviews out there. I come to your channel and I feel understood. 😂 I have so much trouble with audiobooks. To get accustomed to it, I'm trying to train my focus and untrain my auto-sound block. So far, eh. Mike's Book Reviews I’m at 96 books “read” this year as of today 66 audio and 30 physical books/ebooks. I almost always read epic fantasy as physical books (wheel of time especially has been all physical books) for the same reason you mentioned and then anything else if fair game if the audiobook is available from my library for free. I also love rereads as audiobooks (finishing up a reread of all 13 of A Series of Unfortunate Events as all audiobooks but read them as physical books first time around for example) or almost anything read by the author (especially autobiographies) is an extra special experience as an audiobook imo.

I was the same then I started listening to books that I've actually READ before (like the Dresden Files). Since I like rereading series when a new book comes out, especially when there's been a long period between books, listening to the books I already know is pretty easy. You don't really get lost since you know the story already

I highly recommend my personal favorite coming-of-age story and what I think is King's most underrated work is hearts in Atlantis specifically Low men in yellow coats. The stand is my favorite novel of all time. I actually love and recommend every style from King not whoever but... the thriller the fantasy the coming of age etc. I was one of the people that started with the dark Tower and then halfway through started devouring all the other books.

When people I know started a book club, a lot of them were amazed at how fast I would read. The joke is that I don't read fast. Based on sites like howlongtoread, the average is 250 words a minute, and I hit 220 on average. It's all about how much time you want to commit to reading in the first place. Back in those days, I read for 3 hours a day. 3 hours a day at 220 words a minute makes for a LOT of books. Time spent reading is more important than reading speed.

Agree. Especially if a book has shorter chapters, I squeeze in reading time often, making it seem I read fast, when in fact I just dedicate more time to it. I think I probably only read at a slightly above average, to average speed.

And it depends on how literate the writing style is. You can't read Dickens like you read Stephen King for example (i'm not establishing a comparison, both are great at what they do). At least that's what i'm experiencing

Really great point. When I transitioned to free time reading instead of using that time for tv/movies and just reading before bed my reading volume skyrocketed just as a function of time input, especially time that was higher quality brain power input when I wasn’t about to fall asleep... lol

I read for about 3 hours a day and it took me about 1 week and a half to two weeks to read anything between 250 to 300 page books. To me that's really slow considering some people read books that length at half a week... Though to be fair, i do have reading ADD so i often have to go back and re read a page or i re read a paragraph i liked multiple times.

"listening ADD" - What a great term! I thought it was just me. It's so hard for me to focus on fiction audiobooks. And yet I listen to podcasts, sermons, lectures, etc. and have no problem concentrating. Maybe it's only a fiction thing? I've done a little better when it's a book I've already read. The mind is a muscle and you have to exercise it. The more you read the better you become at it and it helps if you truly love doing it. Some people like reding but they also like doing other things, like playng videogames and so never become a efficient at it as bookworms like yourself. Singleminded focus goes a long way.

I work at a job that lets me have earphones in pretty much all day, eventually I got into Audiobooks and through that I've 'read' about 90 books over the past 2 years or so whereas I've only read maybe 5 books with mah eyeballs in the same time I get too distracted by video games and youtube While most of the time it's just another way of consuming the media that's more convenient to me I do think that on the occasion that you get a really great narrator it can definitely add to the experience

I was never able to retain audiobooks either until recently. I found that if you read the first 100 or so pages of the book to start you can build the characters and the world up in your mind without distraction. Once you have established the foundation of the story then switching between reading and listening becomes a lot easier. I tend to only do this for larger fantasy books and it has been very enjoyable especially if the narrator is good.

I've suffered my entire life from ADHD and AS. I'm very grateful & thankful that I am able to Completely Absorb audiobooks and surround myself inside the story. It never gets boring and I retain everything! I've never been able to completely read a book even when I was in school, it messes with my eyes and plus my dyslexia didn't help. Audiobooks gave me a second chance at enjoying these really amazing incredible stories. I'm just really happy to be able to be apart of it and experience these stories. Audiobooks really gave a breath of fresh air into my life. A lot of people hate on audiobooks but its just another way of consuming a story. I also purchased a 32gb Kindle Paperwhite because of your video you made. Thanks for making this video and keep doing you! Have a wonderful day :)

I tried some audiobooks for fantasy and it was harder to follow for sure and easy to miss things. I find it easier with biographies or autobiographies (especially when read by the author) and have enjoyed those as audiobooks. For reading a lot, I think there is a lot of downtime to find extra reading time. I like to watch sports, often just on my couch. During commercials I'll read, and by the end of a game, my bookmark is a good chunk further. When exercising, I often choose a sit down bike machine at the gym and then I can read while exercising.

I tried audiobooks for years but couldn’t get into them. I kept trying because I’d enjoyed the Doctor Who and Dahl ones I listened to as a kid in school. I tried everything, ones that were more like radio plays, slowed the speed down, listened in the shower, made sure my focus was fully on the audiobook with no distractions. Every trick someone suggested didn’t work for me. My mind always drifted after not even a couple of minutes. I never listened to audiobooks if I was cooking or cleaning or put them faster like some people did because if I couldn’t listen to them with no distractions how the hell was I supposed to pay attention while doing something else? I don’t know what made me try it but one day I was drawing and put one on. By the time I’d finished the drawing I was up to 2x speed, half way through the book and most importantly could tell you everything that happened in it. Turns out I can only listen to audiobooks if they’re 2x speed and I’m doing something relatively taxing with my hands. Probably should have worked this out sooner since I’m one of those people who can’t study in complete silence. So yeah I can only listen to audiobooks if I’m being distracted from listening to them at the same time. Who knew?

The Star Wars audiobooks are fun because they are like listening to a movie. They have sound effects and music. Marc Thompson is so good at performing the character voices. I find I enjoy books more if I read them though and retain more of it. I love the Stephen King hardcovers. Don’t they look great just as mere objects? I recommend his book “On Writing” where he tells the story of how he became a writer and his writing process.

I had the same issue with audiobooks until I got a Freda reader and increased the speed. My friend said it sounded like a foreign language to her. I explained that I read very fast and on normal speed I get bored and my mind wanders, and I don't retain what I heard. At the increased speed it's closer to my own reading speed.

My secret to reading fast and for long periods of time is to 1)start reading aloud, this gets your brain engaged 2) speak as quickly as possible and don’t care about fully pronouncing the worlds or saying every word 3) eventually you get to a point where you are mumbling the worlds at rapid fire 4) then you will naturally stop mumbling and you will transition to reading in your head at the fast pace of ur mumblig 5) you are engrossed into the book from this transition from speaking to internal reading allowing you to get lost in the book and loss track of time. So this is what I do. I had a eye convergence insufficiency as a kid which lead to me not being able to read well. I couldn’t focus on the worlds on the page. I was really bad but eventually I got eye therapy, which fixed my problem. I read the lunar chronicles in middle school book unit in English and it was really hard to read but it was so much fun. I wanted to read better so I came up with this method over a year of trying different things. I use it all the time now and it is how I manage to read 1 to 2 books a week.

I listen to audiobooks at work because I paint planes and I don’t need much focus to do it. During my breaks I read on my kindle Oasis. I have two books going at any given time. One audiobook and one regular book. I love audiobooks while working and it counts as reading in my opinion. As long as you’re following the story, what difference does it make? Btw, everyone at work is country boy as shit so they always look at me like I’m crazy when They find out how much time I spend reading. Lmao.

I was always an avid reader, I only listen now. I had a stroke 3 years ago and one of the things that suffered was my ability to read. I find it very difficult to get from one end of a paragraph to the other, I keep either skipping sentences or words and end up re-reading the same thing multiple times as if I'm stuck in a loop, it's extremely frustrating. I listen with my eyes closed and fall right into almost any story. There are a handful of narators that are bad, although most are quite listenable. So I have come to think of listening to a story as reading, even if it really isn't.
