I always thought of stoicism as a really dispassionate approach to life and I’ve avoided it because it sounded depressing. But after this video and perhaps the timing of it as well, I see that it is very life changing way of thinking especially for anxious people. We do live in misery or happiness based on how we perceive things rather than how it is.
@btcpyr2 жыл бұрын
lowercase stoicism is the personality trait of not showing or having any emotion (which is unhealthy if applied to all aspects of life). uppercase Stoicism is this philosophy which is a way of life. The founder of Stoicism, Zeno, taught this philosophy from the "Stoa Poikile"(which is greek for "Painted Porch"), which is how Stoicism got its name.

Stoicism, a subject near and dear to my heart. I see that it is very much in fashion these days, and one thing that I do want to add that many seem to gloss over is the emphasis on being a virtuous and good person. The ability to control your reactions, control your perceptions, and therefore be in control of your happiness is great; however, without the focus on being virtuous, we lose the benefits of Stoicism for our society.

I've always been quick to understand material and remembering it for final exams. But that was it. I couldn't remember or apply them when other material was being built upon them. It was like I was always learning from scratch again and I burned out. HARD. I wish his content was available when I was growing up. Never too late though. Thanks Ali for putting out helpful content.

I'm a big fan of the Stoics. Since I discovered them, it has really enriched my life and given me the tools to handle life's ups and downs. That quotation from Viktor Frankl made me wonder if he was a Stoic, too! Lovely to meet Sam Ali. Be nice to hear more from him on some other occasion. I'll definitely subscribe to his channel and check out his content. It was also nice to see you having a good chat with a mate, rather than the deep dives you also do. For me it's also easier to be sure of watching when I only have to find 10-20 minutes, or even 30 minutes, out of my day. The longer deep dives are much harder to absorb and digest all in one go because of their length - even at 1.5 speed! ;-) Thanks again - always worth watching your content!

That second quote hit home. One time I was feeling so frustrated that I couldn’t even think straight, I was hurt and angry and could process the situation. At that awful place I had an epiphany “wait, I’m incharge of my own emotions, so I can just choose to not care as much and calm down” So I did. It was a thought that instantly took the weight of the world off my shoulders- I was fine and in control. I’m glad this is a thing, I thought I was a bit abnormal for bending my emotions to my will.
