How can I remove my milia? What causes milia? Do certain skincare products cause milia? These are just a few of the common questions we get in our private Facebook group about those little white bumps on the skin called milia. That's why we spoke with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Sheila Farhang to learn all about milia, including tips on how to remove milia and treat it at home.

For years I have been fixing it for my partner, his sister and now our daughter. For some reason it runs in their family. Pin skin with a needle literally just on the top of it and gently rub away with a cotton bud. Sooner the better before it becomes bigger. No scars and skin heals in a day.

I've been wearing contact lenses since I was 14 and i'm 48. A dermatologist once told me it was "protein deposits" from contact lense use...which is pretty much a less elaborate explanation than in this video. However, I found this video particularly informative since it's so common and obviously few people know much about "milia". Thanks! I thought I was developing old age cystic fibres which had me a bit worried....

I think she is correct about the dead skin buildup causing them. I notice on my clients they form in the sweat patterns of the face. On the bridge of the nose if you wear glasses, under the eyes if you have high cheekbones that hold sweat under the eye. If you use retinol and get facial peels regularly you will keep them at bay. But once they form a professional Esthetician should be asked to remove them. They will last for months. Sometimes getting larger.

I'm 61 and never had milia until last summer when I got about 3-4 on each eyelid and about 6-8 on other parts of my face. I had no idea where they came from, but figured out it was because I had started using facial oils for cleaning and moisturizing about 6 months before. After some research, I ended up with some tea tree oil, exfoliating wipes made specifically for the eye area. It took daily use for about 3 months for them to all go away.
@lalala2763

@@lalala2763 I started with Cliradex eye wipes, then later went to Mediviz eye wipes because they were less expensive (got both on Amazon - please read the reviews) The Cliradex are pretty strong, so squeeze out the excess liquid before wiping eyelids. You can cut these wipes in half and get twice as many uses per box. Just be consistent with using them while treating the milia. I haven't gotten any milia back after treating them with the wipes and I also stopped using facial oils. Another benefit of using the medicate eye wipes is it helped make my eyelids smoother and my dark circles seem to have improved.

If you dont mind baby needles (tiny! ) there are things called lancets you can buy at the drugstore in a small box and you can use them to gently break open the milia so that you can express the material inside. I do this anytime i get one and its a little uncomfortable but it doesnt take too long and then its completely gone! If you want tips on how to do it let me know. But its a lot cheaper than going to a dermatologist and you get instant results. (I work in the medical field and with IVs, so needles dont bother me, so I understand if you wouldnt want to do it that way.) 😊

The dairy thing is true. I was plagued with cystic acne from 12 to 27. I went vegan right before I turned 28 and I haven’t had a breakout since. I’m 41 now. I still get occasional hormonal acne but it’s like two or three little short-lived pimples around my chin and it’s not painful the way the constant giant pulsating cystic acne was. If you have painful cystic acne, do consider nixing dairy.

I buy little lancets in a box and use those to open up the milia so that i can get it out. It works really well!! And i just throw the lancet away after 1 use. The needles are so tiny so it doesnt hurt too much. I just have to be very careful as most that I ever get are around my lower lash line. I just try to gently push it in at an angle (almost parallel to my skin) and then when i think I'm in it i gently pull up (or away from it) to basically rip it open. Then i can gently work it out with the lancet or squeeze it out. Its similar to what a dermatologist would do, if not using desiccation. And a lot cheaper.

Very helpful video. I just learned I have milia under my left eye when I went to get a facial from my younger sister who happens to be an esthetician. She's the one who pointed it out. I did notice the bumps too but I thought they were whiteheads. So glad I got advice from my sister and watched this video.

Well, I notice that I ONLY get these after eating greasy, fatty meats and foods, tho. They are also larger and also appear slightly lower. I am 100% dairy free. And I do not wear make up, nor use any oily/thick moisturizers or any harsh cleansers on my face or skin. So I think it has something to do with the inability to digest Fats and/or High Cholesterol or some such.

I've also had a few that it couldn't touch after 3 months although it is probably the best and most affordable treatment for them that I've ever used. Even within the family of milia you can have different locations and reasons for them and some will honestly require a trip to the derm for extraction. I'm 47 and I've been dealing with it since around age 30 after many years stupidly spent in the sun.

I pop them up with the needle of a syringe, the tip is hollow like a spoon, and you must clean up everything first with alcohol. Then I insert the syringe as a spoon around the ball of keratine/millia and I took them out. It's easy because is more sharp than any needle. Then to stop the little blood that remains, with a qtip fill with with spray aluminum deodorant I press on the insert point. And voila. No scars and no millia. I don't trust dermatologists anymore, don't ask me why. That's why I said: Fine, I'll do it myself! My story is not an advice, merely what I do. Don't hate me please 🙏

I hope she answers, but i know there are good eye creams with retinol that are made to be gentle under the eye. Like the one from First Aid Beauty. I've been wanting to try it because the ingredient deck looks great. (Been using this brands brightening niacinamide eye cream in the AM and its SO good!!! Great skincare ingredients plus it has a beautiful glow to it that sort of highlights the area.) But there are others too. But yeah I'm curious about regular retinol because if i get mine too close to my under eye i get peeling.

Wait, my dermatologist said prescription strength retinoids should be used around the ye, and that it is a common misconception that they cannot or should not be used in this area. Especially since the skin gets crepe-y - it really benefits from it. I'm so surprised this term has said otherwise! I wonder what her reasoning is. I use 0.05% tretinoin around me eyes and it's really helped with the hooding.

I get milia under my eyes. I remove it myself by taking a sewing needle which I sterilize by holding it over a lighted candle until the tip is rally hot , I then pierce the white tiny bumps with the cooled needle tip and remove the *filling* , called milia.. Very easy with some pain , but I have RA, so I learned to tolerate pain. I have done this for 50 years and never had a problem. Just hate to go to doctors .

I had to squeeze out the rest to make sure nothing was going to get stuck in there but at least this cyst popped out and was removed. Now I’m gonna have to check to see if it left a scar but even if it did it’s better than having that bump there. It looks like a little chunk of rice and when I smashed it it was like fatty, I thought it might be face creams or dead skin cells. I’m glad it’s out
