Keep the 300 straight six. As noted elsewhere, it’s bulletproof. I’ve run fleets of 30-40 Econolines with those things, many in excess of 400k miles, and never had an oil pan or valve cover off (except the ‘81s, when they had a piston cracking issue…😖) This is a hill I’m willing to die on. 👍

Hey Robbie don't get rid of that inline 6 they're indestructible and their built exactly for what you're using it for plus you can build them up and they get great fuel economy all you need clean the card and service The engine. On second thought you might think about finding a snow plow for the front of that machine so that when you're up in the deep snow you can push snow away from vehicles and other things.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 great show

Ford built that straight 6 for right at 100 yrs. The 300 was the culmination of 100 yrs of development. It is a real torque monster. A friend had one in pickup 2 wheel drive 3 speed on the tree. We always took it hunting in Washington state and never got stuck. I lost track of how many newer Broncos, Suburbans and whatever the dodges were that we pulled out. Never had a winch but in 1st gear we could have moved Mt Rainier if we had had enough rope. Don’t mess with it. If you want a racer get an LS but if you want a great recovery vehicle stick with that 300 Ford. Plus you’d be surprised how much speed and hop up gear is out there for the 300

Had wiring gremlins constantly coming up on my 1968 Ford Tractor. After a couple years dealing with them again and again and again, I just stopped. My boys and I took a couple days on a nice warm spring weekend and gutted all the wires and then painstakingly rewired the entire Tractor. Of course, machines back then were pretty simple. But naturally, we needed to add work lights, strobes, and replace EVERY bulb on the thing (including the back lights on the instrument cluster) with LEDs. No more electrical issues. Suck it up and do it right.

Do an alternator welder conversion so you can make something driveable or fix the Kat in the event something breaks on it. Check out Merlin's latest video to see how to do an alternator welding and light conversion. How to Turn Your Alternator into an Arc Welder at Merlins Old School Garage. The little 300 Ford might need a turbo update as well.

Finally my expertise! Spent most of my military career on tracked vehicles. The track suspension and drive systems were different layouts, but it's a simple system, especially with the steering and brakes linked in yours. It's called 'laterals' instead of a 'wheel' or 'handlebars'. Pull back on both, all stop. Pull back on left, left track stops, right does not, so you turn left. Pull back on right, right track stops, left does not, so you turn right. Let them go, it's going straight. Make sure you check the track tension, that piston that keeps the track tight so it doesn't throw on rough or uneven terrain. Had that happen on a sandy hill in Iraq. Not a good time. Check your drive wheels and connections between your laterals and the steering box at least every week. Keep everything greased, mark the torqued nuts so you can see if there's any movement between maintenance. I get the feeling this is going to look amazing after about April when the snow's gone and ya'll start getting it all prettied up, sealed good and painted.
@BFVgnr
@BFVgnr Жыл бұрын
I don't know if the steering on your Cat is set up that way, but there's a steering mode called 'pivot steer'. It basically puts one side in forward and the other side in reverse, so the vehicle can turn around in it's own length. On narrow sections, you have to make sure you have as much side clearance as the vehicle length, before pivoting. It's better than donuts. Really.
