I've done that kind of repairs, before, on flat cables... But that usually involves... Yanno... CONNECTING the torn sides before applying the UV glue. And i always offer the customer a lengthy warranty on that kind of specific repair.

The worst part with this one is it is not a heat resistant cable even though it actually looks like one so even doing a solder job on it would just melt most the cable and do more damage. It's one of the fun things I've found with MSI laptops sometimes they use parts that look like good ones but are very much not
@Oryngton17 күн бұрын
@TheBeardedITGuy oh, absolutely. Most of the ones i repair are also not heat resistant. So it's a double-edged sword. Client doesn't want to wait fir the part, so i soend the next hour slapping as much low-melt solder and flux as i humanely could and praying to the Machine God to not burn these things to dust.
@TheBeardedITGuy17 күн бұрын
I used to do more repairs like that but I've gotten to the point where I just tell the customer they'll have to find a different repair shop if they're not willing to wait for the part to arrive. Especially back when I worked for non-profits I was willing to do so many things that nowadays I would never do to a computer
@Oryngton17 күн бұрын
@TheBeardedITGuy well, me being relatively new to providing the repair services (outside of work, that is, where i have done the exact same thing for about 12y, now), i literally cannot afford to say no to people, yet. 🤣

That's UV glue you put over jump wires to insulate and keep them together
@TheBeardedITGuy18 күн бұрын
Yes but the main problem is there's no jumpers on this cable and you should not use jumpers on this type of cable and you should also not use UV glue or resin on this type of cable
@Blu3ManiC18 күн бұрын
@@TheBeardedITGuyit’s just a pcb at the end of the day, bodge wires would be fine considering that part of the cable isn’t even the location that needs to bend and it was just carelessly ripped in the first place.

@@bro589 yeah man, IPC definitely recommend you cover traces with kapton tape for high quality long-term use. Thanks for the enlightening comment. Reworking wires and traces is with kapton tape. You know your stuff!

Lol they have solder mask but didn't bother to solder. I had a refurb palmrest and the supplier had cut the end off rhe backlight flex. I was able to scrape away the mask and taped the plastic end to it from the old to get it to seat and it worked!

I’m actually glad they didn’t try soldering this cable because it’s one that doesn’t handle heat well even though it should be out of the same material as kapon tape!
@adamdboyd16 күн бұрын
Thats a genuine flat cable repair, they might not have been able to get the part if they resorted to that repair.
@TheBeardedITGuy16 күн бұрын
The cable is one that has never been out of stock from most suppliers (possible that they only looked on Amazon) and they never informed the customer who owns the laptop. Considering the "repair" failed and was causing issues with the hard drive it is not a legitimate repair.
@joeysupra31118 күн бұрын
thats solder mask, they probably tried to solder it
@TheBeardedITGuy17 күн бұрын
There was no solder involved luckily because that specific type of cable would be more damaged by the heat from trying to solder it

they soldered it and then used uv resin to over it and they never used enough

@@TheBeardedITGuy yeah but all I need is the copper in the cable. Kapton tape becomes the cable

At that point any movement that the laptop has risks those wires moving and crossing leads causing more damage. Also scraping the layer off to get to the leads would risk just scraping the leads off it's not as durable as a circuit board
@bro58917 күн бұрын
@ that’s why you use coated copper jumpers. Usually green or red. And did I mention the tape to keep them in place? It’s not a solution to sell to a customer but a solution to get the machine running. You know, unlike the previous repair.

How is there worse? They pretty clearly broke the connector and didn’t tell the customer but instead of replacing the five dollar part they glued it back together so it would fail after it left their shop and they wouldn’t have to deal with it.

If the technician it actually known what he was doing. He might have been able to successfully bridge the damaged part of the cable and then coat that in the UV repair surface material. That at least with a disclaimer to the customer that we cannot acquire the part necessary but we can at least give you temporary access to your device if you take very good care of it it might last for a short period of time but you definitely need to find somebody who can acquire the necessary part for you or look at replacing your machine. A technician who fails to make that clear to their customer isn't worth their salt as a technician. And at the very least of the technician isn't the one allowed to speak with the customers and it goes through somebody at the desk whose job is to speak with the customers then it's on their shoulders to have informed the customer correctly. But yes there is no way to repair those cables by simply gluing them together this is an involved repair that takes a small amount of skill and a little bit of knowledge.
@TheBeardedITGuy18 күн бұрын
The only way you could bridge the connections on this type of cable would be to embed the wires in the resin because you can't solder onto the cable without damaging it more and having rigid cables on there would mean it wouldn't be able to flex in the way it needs to. No there is not a way to properly fix this even temporarily and this is also a part that costs less than $5 and has never been unavailable to my knowledge. This was not a proper repair in any way and was not told to the customer at all. Even if it was told to the customer you should never do a repair like this even if it is temporary there is no proper way to splice those traces back together.
