Discover how alcohol impacts your body’s processes and causes hangovers, and find out what causes the most common hangover symptoms.
--
The molecule responsible for hangovers is ethanol, which we colloquially refer to as alcohol. Ethanol is present in all alcoholic beverages, and generally speaking, the more ethanol, the greater the potential for a hangover. So, how exactly does alcohol cause a hangover- and is there any way to prevent one? Judy Grisel explores the surprising ways that alcohol affects the body.

@@perpetualbystander4516 Opium has been around just about as long as alcohol. It's been in use since like 3000BC. The reason why alcohol scrapes by is that it also saved society from death. Back in the olden days, water sources could get polluted causing people to become violently ill from drinking water there. The process of producing alcohol would purify the water just enough that the alcoholic beverage wouldn't make you sick. So in really populated cities it was very common for the people to drink a kind of mash beer with like 1% alcohol by volume which wouldn't be enough to get you drunk, but it would keep you hydrated and maybe even give a little buzz if you drank enough.

Not really, just find a type of alcohol that suits you best! I don't get any hangover from ginger cider for example. My friend can drink multiple bottles of (good but expensive) wheat beer without getting any symptoms. Gin and tonic is also quite popular because many don't get any hangover after. But the best advice I can give - only drink if the drink tastes good. If it starts tasting bad, stop. The organism tells you that something isn't right.

I have Crohn's disease. It's basically an autoimmune disease characterized with inflammation in the gut. Since alcohol can cause inflammation, that's why my doctor says I'm not to have too much alcohol (one drink with food in a blue moon is fine), but it's better overall to not drink at all. (Incidentally, I'm on blood thinners due to one time hospitalization from pulmonary embolism, due to Factor V Leiden mutation, and alcohol can also make your blood even more thinner, thus more liable for internal bleeding if I fall and hit my head.) So if I'm offered an alcoholic beverage in a situation that says one shouldn't refuse, I tell them, "I can't; doctor's orders." Besides, I hate beer and wine, and margaritas are all I can ever appreciate when it comes to flavor.

That's funny, considering I ordered and consumed a bottle of hangover pills called AfterDrink well before this video came out. Also, I've been using hangover pills or drinks for years. The drinks (Morning Recovery) work better, but if you get the right ones, both have noticeable results. AfterDrink helps, but you have to take three large capsules before and after drinking and it only helps a little bit. Morning Recovery tastes bad, but you chug a bottle before passing out and you wake up feeling like you didn't drink at all. It's a damn miracle.

Intoxication doesn't cause a hangover - going to sleep while intoxicated does cause a hangover. I learned this during my drunken college days. After numerous miserable hangovers following nights getting wasted, I discovered one morning I escaped the hangover by staying awake all night until I was sober. Going to sleep while drunk is the critical error. I later discovered I could accelerate the sobering process by drinking lemon coke. I don't know if it is the water or the sugar in the soda that helps, but it has never failed.
@yankeedude252
@yankeedude252 Жыл бұрын
I've tried this as well, but I've found it only sometimes works; occasionally I'll go to sleep sober and wake up with a hangover, and it's the worst. I think the reason it usually works is because we're just sleeping through the hangover part rather than waking up in the middle of it.

I used to not have hangovers in college. But now, oh boy! There's now just a fine line between a chipper morning and puking my guts out. Luckily, I don't get the photophobia, headaches, and other symptoms with it, though. But even the G.I. issues alone sucks. I hate the feeling so now I just drink probably three times a year max on special occasions.

I'm guessing there might be more extra components besides ethanol and methanol. I once drunk 200ml (4%) of cider and got a horrible hangover. At the same time, I can drink 500ml (5%) of ginger cider and I feel perfectly fine already after an hour.

Working in retail alcohol sales, it amazes me how many people convince themselves that it's the residual sugar in certain wines or syrupy liqueurs that gives them a headache. Hmmm. When was the last time you said 'no cake for me, I have to work in the morning and don't want to feel hung over'.

They say gin and vodka are less likely to give you a hangover. "Less likely" being key words. The hands down, absolute worst hangover I've ever in my life had was off vodka, after guzzling a crapload, camping out in the woods with my friends when I was 16. Omg, you talkin about feeling bad. I nearly gave myself alcohol poisoning the night before and blacked out on a cooler for 6 hours. Throwing up unconscious down my shirt and everything. That next day, oh that next day, I will never forget. I was hungover 2 damn days! I've never even heard of such a thing. I'm 42 now and I still can't drink vodka. Uhhg. Gives me a shiver just thinking about it.

100% effective cure for hangovers: Don't drink. Plain and simple.
@NovelNovelist

I've always been immune to hangovers, to the point that I always forget they're something other people experience. I can knock back as much alcohol as I want and wake up fine. I thought this might change as I got older, but happily no. I'm over twenty years into my "drinking career" and still not affected by hangovers. I suspect it's in large part because I don't get dehydrated. I always drink a glass or two of water for each alcoholic beverage I consume, just from preference -- I also drink a glass or two of water for each coffee, tea, or soda I drink. I always enjoy having a meal, or at the very least snacking or having dessert, when I'm drinking too, so perhaps that plays into the glucose thing the video talked about.

In Mexico i've most commonly seen Menudo (spicy beef tripe soup) used as a hangover cure. Hungover or not Menudo is amazing and I always recommend people try it, despite the main ingredient. In the region of Mexico that my family is from Consomé de birria (rich spicy broth that goat meat is cooked in for tacos) is also used as a hangover cure.

I never get hangovers and all I do is practice 2 things. 1. Stay Hydrated. I am not afraid to drink water in between drinks. I generally aim to drink as much water as I have peed. But in practice, its probably only about half that. But it works. 2. I make sure I can sleep in. I limit my drinking based of that. Sometimes I have to work the next day, so I reverse engineer my schedule to make sure I get lots of sleep. The less time I have, the less I will drink that night. Sleeping it off with lots of water will take out the hangover for me. At worse, I feel a little off the next day. I've had the odd hangover in my life for sure. But it might only account for 1% of my drinkings. As for most of the time, I can get up, go to work, and not be hindered in the slightest.

For someone who doesn't suffer from hangovers, or headaches, this is interesting. I've mixed and binged drank, and been fine the next day or a few hours after drinking. In fact, functioned well the next day even after not sleeping the previous night. Vodka is the only alcoholic drink that has made me puke, however. Not a favorite.
