Useful stuff... I'm going to start scam-baiting. Your previous video on downloading a virtual box was also awesomely practical as well. the more of the scammers time we waste the more it will hurt them and in turn prevent other less informed individuals from becoming victims.

Dude, youo don't even need to be on PRI or VOIP to spoof the CID. I remember setting this up on basic POTS lines with cheap VOIP gateways about ten years ago. Although that was legitimately setting a company name to show for clients, I am still amazed that this overrode the carrier CID. The real question is how to find the true call routing when the CID is spoofed like this.

I think this has to be stopped and made illegal; the phone carriers must improve their systems to make sure that no matter how a caller tries to misrepresent themselves, only the true ID will be shown. The thing is, spoofing of caller IDs is rarely used for legal purposes; mostly scammers do it.
@ivanklochkov34442 жыл бұрын
@@isteal7427 Well, those ones who do it legally, could register their exceptions with their provider in advance. And such fake caller ID exceptions must be reachable to call back and reach the same organization (even though with a different phone number, for example office phone instead of cellular).
@-Ace-of-Spades-2 жыл бұрын
@@ivanklochkov3444 Having worked in telecommunications since the mid nineties I can tell you that the 'genie is out of the bottle' in this regard. Attempting to restrict it's function to 'legitimate' users is a non-starter from a technical point of view. Even defining 'legitimate' users becomes fraught with grey areas. The vast majority of commercial systems actually use some variation of this so legislation would be far from the black and white position it may at first appear. Those that use this for their unlawful gains are certainly in the minority when you look at the total business generated worldwide.

The solution (SHAKEN/STIR) was made available several years ago (as of 2022) and it was the job of the phone companies to implement it. In 2021, T-Mobile implemented it, and other phone companies mostly followed suit. It works for cell phones receiving the calls. A checkmark appears next to or below the number, indicating that the phone company of the caller verifies that the claimed Caller ID is the same as the phone line from which the call is coming. So, you'll see the number on your cell phone, and if it has a checkmark (tick for UK) it indicates that's really where the call is coming from. If your phone doesn't know who that number belongs to, then you'll just see the number, but if the number is unverified, your provider might display below the number "potential scammer." The scammers, as this video above says, are their own phone company, which won't have a relationship with T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, etc. If the bad guys' VoIP service DID start providing ID info to T-Mobile, for example, so that the number WAS "verified," as soon as T-Mo discovered the bad data, they could stop accepting data from the VoIP service. In effect, they're not going to play whack-a-mole, and numbers will only be trusted if they come from another big phone company.

Is it true that when you get a call and answer and there’s silence, it means they’re trying to see if you’re an actual active person, or they’re waiting for you to talk so they can steal your voice or your name?
@robert5 Жыл бұрын
first thing on my recorded message system is that tone that plays when you call a number that is no longer in service. they call it a sit tone. everyone who knows me knows this. telemarketers or people who don't know me think my number is invalid and just hang up. You can find that sit tone if you want it. These days I don't know how well it still works but I have had that setup for over 15 yrs. I still have plenty of telemarketers calling me so I set my ringtone to silence. If I don't already have you in my address book your call wont make my phone ring. So... FU Telemarketers... you cant bother me.

Back in the Day scammers would call the numbers to see who answered and see if they can hack the voicemail password. Than they'd re-record the message. i.e. Yes operator, I accept the charges. Than they'd allow people to make long distance phone calls. In big cities you'd see people lined up around a pay phone. A few thugs were there to collect your money. People are lazy and don't change their passwords or make it real easy.

Hello: Thank you for this video on spoofing> However, I need to ask some questions about spoofing and how we can prevent them from calling. I do know that the first ring on a landline provides the phone with all of the information it needed. I do not know how this works when a spoof call comes in. Could you comment on these issues and why the governments, phone companies, ect. do not seem to want to stop this. I do have a block on my land phone placed there by my phone company. Actually, I think the public needs to know more about this issue and what can be done about it. Thanks.
