Been trying to get an idea of exactly how gas-delayed blowback works to see if it's appropriate for a fictional pistol design in a project I'm working on. I do have a degree in Firearms Technology but there wasn't much in my classes on gas-delayed blowback. Having a visual example helped me see that it does work exactly like I thought it did. This video was a major help. Thanks.

I was at a 2-day CCW shooting class a few years back, and one of my classmates, a doctor and a pretty cool guy, had brought an HK P7M8. It's a great choice for a carry gun but NOT for a shooting class! Thirty minutes into the class I loaned him my spare pistol for the rest of the day because his HK was getting too hot to handle. On day two he brought a USP9 instead. He wanted to use the P7M8 because that's what he carried. He learned the hard way that it's a fine choice for a carry gun, but it's just not an option for a high volume shooting class. It worked out great for me though. For the first time I actually got to spend some time shooting a P7, and I've been wanting one ever since! They're great little guns, except the M10 version. That one kind of sucks. Not all 9mm's can be successfully adapted to .40S&W, and the P7M10 is a good example of a failed attempt.

I have long thought thaqt gas delayed blowback would be optimal for shotguns. This is because of the enormous range of variation in energy and pressure from shell to shell. Gas delay would automatically proportionally increase delaying force with chamber pressure. That solves the biggest challenge for semi auto shotguns. The other big challenges have to do with the wonky shapes (plural) of shells.

Steyr GB is a neat pistol. It's understandable why it lost to the Glock but wouldn't history be interesting if it had won the Austrian pistol competition.
@sejembalm5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Steyr GB was a very interesting and innovative pistol from 1968, having the accurate (but hot and dirty) gas blowback system, high (even for today) 18-round magazine capacity, polygonal rifling, and a reduced number of working parts. Steyr expected the GB to be a shoo-in for the Austrian military contract, as it was well understood that a domestic Austrian design would receive preferential consideration. However, a no-name bayonet supplier named Gaston Glock appeared out of nowhere and won the military trials with his polymer-framed G17. Steyr certainly hadn’t expected that, and they proceeded to enter the GB in the 1983 US military pistol trials - where it lost out to the Beretta M92F despite many good qualities. www.forgottenweapons.com/other-handguns/steyr-gb/

One other drawback you didn't mention is suppression. Although fixed barrel guns are usually easy to suppress because you don't have to worry about a recoil booster, gas delayed guns don't suppress well because the added backpressure can cause cycling issues. Supressors can be made and tuned for specific guns like the VAIME suppressor made for the P7M13SD used by the Argentine Navy, but it was absolutely MASSIVE in order to reduce backpressure via large internal volume and required equally absurdly long barrel threads to support the weight. Needless to say they weren't very popular or successful.

Hey Ian, thx for all your awesome videos, what would define sustained fire? are we talking one mag or more?
@shawnr7715 жыл бұрын
Cyclic rate is the fastest speed the weapon is capable of firing. Usually given for automatic weapons. Weapons tend to overheat very quickly. At some point usually causing some sort of malfunction. Sustained rate is the rate of fire that the weapon can shoot for long periods of time without overheating or malfunctioning. A machinegun might have a Cyclic rate of 750 rounds per minute. Hold the trigger back and let er rip. The sustained rate might be 125 to 200 rounds per minute. This allows the heat to dissipate a little bit. It is one of the reasons Machinegunners are taught to shoot bursts. Still going to be hot. The quasi exception to this rule are water cooled MGs. Some had sustained rates very close to the cyclic rates.

I wonder, Could a sort of integrally suppressed pistol be developed with a baffle stack connected to the slide which works simultaneously to slow the slide as well as contain a bit of the muzzle report? Perhaps the barrel would be ported like the first pistol shown also? And would a baffle stack create more or less force pushing the slide forward keeping the chamber closed? Multiple surfaces each being forced by gasses, hmmmmm?

That is a gas operated delaying system. How about a system that is gas operated unlocking system? E.g. a gasport in the barrel opens behind projectile, allowing gas to trigger the opening of the bolt via some kind of system reminding Brownings potato digger or something. Relatively light bolt remains locked and closed until the bullet reaches a certain point down the barrel end, releases the light bolt which still gets a little, but enough blowback to cycle the gun. Gasses needed to work this system should be minimal, so they can well be vented out without heat issues. As a bonus; With a dud round, there is no possibility to cycle a new round with a bad bore obstruction.

It would be really cool to see someone take a gas blowback system like the first gun that you should with the barrel as the piston and make suppressor gas blowback operating gun to where the gun doesn't have it's gas system without the suppressor but not like oh welrod even though they're really cool so again that has to operate the action and that's damn near completely quiet using only the suppressor that would be really cool for a semi-auto that's the other thing well rides are single shot even though they have a MAG

I wonder what the upper limit for cartridges is for gas delayed blowback? I had thought it would be suitable for a pdw carbine concept especially if the gas vented into a piston above the barrel bringing the barrel more into line with the hand-shoulder axis and where the heat could be more easily dealt with.
@aurorawhorealis5 жыл бұрын
I've never seen/heard of anything successful above 9mm for gas delay, it's really not a good system for powerful cartridges. If you must have a blowback rifle, roller delay is basically the only good option, and even then, why not just use a piston or DI gun? If you're worried about an inline barrel and recoil impulse, blowback of any kind will recoil harder than anything gas operated, it's just a more violent system.
@Matt_The_Hugenot5 жыл бұрын
@@aurorawhorealis The only production gas delayed blowback gun I can think of using something hotter than 9mm parabellum is the .40 S&W version of the P7. The reason for choosing this system above roller delayed or gas operated systems is simply cost and complexity, it falls between simple blowback and more mechanically complex designs gaining some but not all of their advantages.
@aurorawhorealis5 жыл бұрын
@@Matt_The_Hugenot Oh yeah, I forgot they made production runs in .40. So yeah, just judging by what actually has been successful with gas delay, I'm not sure it could handle a rifle round, even 5.56, not comfortably at least. Would probably get way hotter way faster with rifle rounds too, it won't benefit from gas moving and venting like a gas operated gun. I get the "perfect middle ground" idea you have, it sounds compelling. But, in a world where a $700 AR can compete with or beat literally anything else, would a brand new design using that system actually be cheaper to produce?
@Matt_The_Hugenot5 жыл бұрын
@@aurorawhorealis I'm not sure what the limiting factor is, pressure, muzzle energy or velocity. The only typical rifle cartridges I'd consider are subsonic ones, .300 AAC Blackout seems obvious, though that brings risks from someone loading supersonic ammunition. 5.7x2.8 is a logical candidate, it's designed for the pdw role. I'd like to see a design in .30 carbine, it's an underappreciated round. Comparing it to a normal AR is interesting. Someone could build a gas delayed blowback upper in 5.7x2.8 that fits into an AR platform it would have less parts and wouldn't require the buffer spring making it even cheaper.
@aurorawhorealis5 жыл бұрын
@@Matt_The_Hugenot Pressure is above all other factors, though in a blowback having low enough bolt velocity/enough dwell time to not outrun magazines and extract cases instead of rip case heads off is an important and sometimes tricky consideration, too. Okay those cartridges are different, only a little higher pressure than handgun rounds. I think .30 carbine would perfectly fit the role you want, it's basically a rimless version of .32 WSL which was used in straight blowback guns, it would probably be pretty tame with some form of delaying. The p90 is straight blowback, no delaying necessary for 5.7. There actually is a 5.7 AR upper available, it's called the AR-57 and costs about $750, less parts doesn't always mean cheaper when there are a tremendous amount of ARs built every year, making production fairly cheap despite their relative complexity, they also are very efficient to produce with modern manufacturing techniques.
