Today I'm going to cover a topic that players have wondered for years. How does Jagex ban bots? It's always been a really confusing subject for people. There's dozens of reports of people claiming to have been banned for no reason, players who run dozens of bot farms and have never been banned, and so on. Now before I get started I just want to say I do not condone botting whatsover It's completely against the rules and will almost certainly get banned. This video is not to encourage botting at all in fact in some ways it may discourage you.

Its easy to bot just people haven't realized that if you don't hook onto the client you do some crafty openCV you can do anything. Biggest problem with most bots is they scan too much and inject and take too much code from the actual game itself or do things way too simply. If you make something simple and realistic to what a human does its impossible to detect. They cannot detect hardware based hacks, cannot detect Artificial intelligence my example would be recording multiple human mouse actions specify openCV to copy those actions to a degree / mimic and change them, then move to the inventory and then tell the computer to take a random action destination to the item in a specified X, Y area, Click in random X Y position or miss reclick, all doing this while not injecting or decompiling code from the game. All systems have flaws and jagex especially has them, the only reason why most people get caught is because the mouse actions are way too smooth they always never follow a different mouse path, always click and never miss or if they do miss they usually repeat the same action on the same interval and finally they never mimic what the human would actually do. If they were to see the actions specified above they would believe its a person, not a bot. You could also give tasks as inputting the english database and give it the ability to deep learn when some one gives a response threw text but all would be very complicated and take a very long time to program. I am personally on the side of players wanting to get XP but in a way thats legitimate but I think it would be cool if players could get afk XP jagex has really never encouraged or added it as a game mechanic, people would have no reason to want to bot anymore.

3 years ago I was banned for botting, honestly don’t even know how to make a bot never even looked into it. But I didn’t play much and I never found out until recently. Submitted an appeal. I was wondering why they thought I was botting that’s how I ended up here but it didn’t really help lol.

Honestly it gave little information about how Jagex bans bots rather than what approaches they take and a little history. I still found the video very interesting though. I didn't know that bots were mostly injection and reflection. I always thought botting was macros just a bunch of recordings of where to click and when to click.

lol yeh well theres a program called mouse recorder or whatever, and you'd click record and do it a couple times and then click play, and it will keep repeating what you did. but like everyone says they have ways to combat it because of its simplicity. also things such as; fishing spots changing, trees going down, defeats the purpose of it. you can't really go indepth with it. but you could use it for things such as buying something in a shop over and over. but then theres the 6 hour log , bots are way more intelligent, they can just login again lol

When i was getting 99 hunter, there was a bot catching chins next to my spot. He was lv 85 when i first saw it. I reported it 10 times per day and asking people passing by to report him. So even if multiple reports from one person doesn't add much in the balance, the bot still received around 10 reports from different people every day. It was still there after 2 weeks when i got my 99 and it got its 99 a few days before i did since it never sleeps. I got 50k chins by getting 99, so the bot also got 50k chins without getting banned even with over 100 reports from different players. I don't know how the report system works, but if that doesn't get an account banned, i don't think reporting someone does anything. And just to be clear, it was a bot. I often stole its hunting spot and it would lose its traps cause it can only put traps on 5 specific tiles. If you "steal" those spots, it just waits there for hours. And when it loses all its traps, another bot logs in and trades with the red chin bot to give it an inventory of new traps. So that means there must have been a network of red chin bots with one bot (or more) giving them new traps so they don't have to bank themselves. The guy running that must have made 1M chins in 2 weeks with 20 accounts. And chances are none of them got banned if the one i reported didn't. They do get banned once they hit 99 in a skill though, cause once you're high in the leaderboards, you draw attention. I saw that account dissapear from highscores at 15m xp. And i rarely saw a bot lv 99. But i saw over 50 of them around 95. They have time to make bank before they get banned. Because of that, when an account is banned, they just train another. So you can see 20 bots hunting birds. They are future red chin bots. It's crazy. A mod could just go there and easily ban over 500 bots every day. But they don't...

If you want to hardcore bot, do it starting on friday evening after about 5pm GMT, then just 24 hour it until monday morning when you will get banned. You won't get banned until Jagex are back at work on Monday morning when they review any accounts that were flagged by their detection systems over the weekend. So even though the account will get banned eventually, you have a whole weekend to grind it for as long as possible and then transfer all cash made to your main. If you do this with like 10 accounts at once, you're in the money every weekend :)

They also have autobans if the account gets flagged a bunch of times tho. No idea what the actual quota is but at a certain point you get an autoban. If you're aiming for max efficiency with the bot it'll get clearly flagged a ton. The video itself talks about the fact that there's a software that doles out bans.

I remember a while after that massive bot nuke day being pulled into some separate area of RS. A mod showed up, asked if I was botting, realized I was just very efficient at hunting (or whatever I was doing) and sent me on my way. As long as the bot-in-question is paying attention and at their keyboard, they should be fine, but I was even alt-tabbed for a couple minutes watching vids. Scared the crap outta me to not be where I expected and to have a mod staring me in the face, but I did nothing wrong haha

You got injection partly wrong and you got reflection completely wrong. With injection you can modify the game in anyay you like, there is no unreachable code. All cluster flutter did was add an extra step. Any half wit can write a control flow deober which will view non-dummy functions, from there you write software that searches for patterns in the bytecode which you then use to identify fields in the game that hold data such as ids, names, or locations. From there there are multiple directions to go, the most common being is generating interfaces that you make the Runescape client implement, then all you are doing is casting Runescape classes to your own so you are able to access what ever you put in there. The beautiful thing about injection is you can bypass every single physical detection method, Jagex checks what classes are load at runtime, you just filter yours out, Jagex checks memory usage, you just make them return a normal value, they check things like your is version, Java version/vendor, you just set those to what ever you like. Reflection DOES NOT CREAT A COPY OF THE GAME for fuck sake I don't know why people think that. All reflection does is allow you to 'statically' view fields and functions currently loaded in the JVM without having direct access to them, its the JVM looking at/within itself, it doesn't need to create a copy to do this. Cluster fluttered added heavy obfuscation to the game, such that thing change on every update, now after every update every bit developer has software that automatically identifies what Jagex is trying to hide.

Regarding 'packet' bots. This wasn't really a common bot and only one that I can think of was ever very good/popular(AutoRune). AutoRune specifically acted like a proxy, having your client connect *through* it and modifying/substituting/generating command packets while reading server packets for info. These were NOT 'easily' fixed. Encryption does not matter in this case. If the client is able to decrypt the packet so is the bot. One way that Jagex mass-identified AutoRune users was by sneaking in a small change. The client was updated to send a special packet every X number of packets sent. If the client didn't send this special packet periodically it was a bot. I'm also pretty sure that previous bots, namely RuneBot, experienced mass bans prior to AutoRune so it wasn't the 'first time' there were mass bans of botters. A note to readers: When the video is talking about these early bots it shows examples in OSRS(e.g. the color bot example). But these bots are all from Classic at this point. Regarding Fatigue: No, it wasn't effective at all. Eventually OCR(Optical Character Recognition) programs could just read the captcha and type it for you. Prior to OCRs a novel little system was used. Botters would open 'Fatigue Operator' which would show them a captcha. They would type in the answer along with dozens/hundreds of other users and whoever got it correct first earned one point. When they would want to bot they would start 'Sleepwalker' which would take an image of their captcha and send it to users who have Fatigue Operator open and would then type their captcha for them. This effected normal users the most I think. When Fatigue was first put in sleeping bags didn't exist and no extra beds were added to the game. This meant that you had to walk from wherever you were skilling to the nearest bed to sleep. For example from the fishing guild to upstairs in the windmill. As far as current/future detection methods. Using machine learning to classify user input as legitimate/fake is likely the future. Valve is experimenting with this.

As a free script writer for one of the biggest open-source rs bots, I always assumed that jagex was only able to use machine learning based pattern recognition on. Therefore I tried to implement basian randomness on all the types of actions I wrote. Many 100+ hours running screens and as far as I remember no reported bans. Very interesting to read the official statements of jagex all those years later

Personally, I tinker with image matching in Jitbit’s Macro Recorder with programmed fail-safes. If/unless statements help to make the macro flow easier with little to no hiccups. Click on image is a nice tool as well as cursor offset and random delays. Bots always work best when you make them yourself.

Actually, it's quite simple, knowing the time it came out it is most likely a data-driven system. Basically, an AI that takes in as inputs player actions and outputs the probability of it being a bot. It is trained on bot examples. Presumably, the inputs Jagex receives is the action done, it's time and maybe camera movements. I got falsely banned. Was training at sand craps, so a lot of afking. I also didn't move the camera a lot and got quite consistent with the agro reset times and always moved to the same spot by clicking on the map. I assume the tasks like fishing, fire making, cooking, smithing etc are even now bottable, but the bots used would probably be color/image recognition bots, so if you left them overnight they would probably be found logged out or hung.

Mod Jacmob created a client that ran the game. It couldn't load any scripts at all. His hiring was a pretty bad decision since he didn't make a bot, he just made a custom client in theory. This while colorbots were still fully operational too. I remember the bot nuke, a lot of chinese guys being angry because their bots were taken down, while players could still bot their ass off. Injection clients are still up too, they'll never quit popping up. If they manage to fix colorbotting. That'd be the end of all bots.

I imagine one method bot detection software uses is delay analysis, such as checking to see if the interval/time between mouseclicks is too precise for human click (e.g. ten clicks in a row all at exactly 500ms apart , or 5000 clicks all between 200-300ms). Sophisticated botting software would have complex delay software to ensure it doesn't outperform a human in either consistency or speed.

Upon relogging i find soul wars went from being packed to now about 10-30 players left (not even enough ppl to play the minigame on its official world) and i waited a bit to see if more people would relog in. Nope lol. Sadly, that was the last day of soul wars i ever played. It completely died shortly after. Then i think they just pulled it completely. Soul wars, pest control, and stealing creations were like the best minigames because you actually earned useful rewards.

A few rumours.. + Jagex can detect if an official client is being used by randomly disconnecting the player, if or when you log back in the client searches for a code inbeded in the official client, if the code is not detected it's assumed you're not using the official client. + Colour bots are easily broken for a variety of reasons however what you might not have noticed is that each time you login the colours of all the surroundings change a few shades, nothing noticeable to they eye though, this easily breaks them. + Many bots are caught by 'false clicks', this is when a you click through an object to click another, for example, if you are woodcutting by a wall, and the is a tree behind it, if you click the tree through the wall and it's not visible, that's a false click. + Training the same skill all the time or for too long is a big indicator. + Jagex flag IP address (apparently MAC addresses too but I find that hard to believe), so if you create a new account with a flagged IP you'll generally get banned within a couple hours. Botting is harder to get away with nowadays, my main was banned after 10 years of botting.

Those 2 would be really bad since a lot of streamers, B0aty and such train skills for hours on end, I bet there are some dedicated regular players who do this aswell. On he topic of false clicks, this is something I do whilst playing runescape because I can't be arsed to rotate the camera.

Hi Mathias :) they're all rumours as no one really knows. Many players train the same skill for hours on end, I believe it's just one of many indicators used to see if a player is botting, I don't think it's likely to get banned for legit players from showing a few indicators.

getting falsely banned is actually common its not rare but its not an every day thing 199/200 times its a bot, but every now and then its a real player and unless they have proof they can't really do much about it Someone already talked about someone named E, i remember watching a video where someone used a tablet to make darts or something and got banned for macroing, and i've seen someone on reddit appeal to a jagex mod cause he was falsely banned and he got lucky enough to get enough upvotes for it to be noticed and taken seriously.

Bots are more active than ever now thanks to Jagex. The amount of new people wanting to bot after bot nuke day was extreme because they just found out about it BECAUSE of Jagex talking about it actively. Anyone can just create a few f2p bots, fish for a few days without getting banned, trade their main account, get all the fish and sell them. So the bots might get banned after a few weeks/months but you will still have the profit on your main account no matter what. My uni programming teacher back in 2011 made a working client + script that fished for 8-9 hours before having to be restarted in less than a month after the bot nuke AND he wasn't even a Runescape player. It was just a bunch of us in class that asked him to do it for fun. So.. launching shit like bot nuke day and stuff which only makes it worse for real players is completely useless.

I had an old account a year and a half ago get banned for "botting/macroing" when I legit didn't/don't even own any botting programs, nor do I know how to bot in the slightest. Sent in an appeal and even messaged a few admins/mods on twitter. They basically told me "nope, we know you were botting", didn't even double check anything, and left my account banned, that did nothing wrong. To this day I'm still salty about it, but I play on a new account now that is way farther than any account I've every made before. I just pray this account never gets a false ban, like my old one did. Lol

really the botwatch false positives would most likely come from people who are able to click the interface literally as fast as the game can register a command. the slight delay a human is SUPPOSE to possess would validify the account, though constant use of the same interval of delay would also be a sign. basically the more perfect you are the more the bot detector hates you.

Some of the information on the period after the removal of the wilderness is incorrect. For example, there were no worlds for almost an entire year, but we did have Bounty Hunter where the drop mechanics were unchanged only that a 3 minute penalty was added before you could leave with loot if you took items from a kill. Additionally, you could transfer gold through bounty hunter by dying for expensive gear or for food such as pumpkins and easter eggs to another player so there was still a market for gold. And finally, PKing was actually more profitable in the pvp world era because of 76k tricking/statue farming.

The anti bot system is pretty bad tbh. it simply checks if an external client is used or not. Or atleast it seems to be.. back when eoc just got released my account had been inactive for months because I didn't like what I heard about the update lol. So I started playing private servers and decided one day that I needed an item ID which wasn't released anywhere at the time, so I loaded up an external client, bought the item on my account, and the next day I was perm banned for a macro major.. despite my account having tops 3 hours login time for months prior to that event. so yeah, Jagex might claim their anti bot system is an amazing shiney tool but I'm not impressed lol. There's a reason why there's only external clients for osrs after all.

I'm curious why botting has always existed and why it can't be stopped as literally it can't be stopped. On that one guy you mentioned i'm going to speculate all he did was give away his buyer base so they could be banned so he got a new pay check. Essentially he would just put code in his bot that would tell him who was using it and then turn them in. I'm curious how bots existed this long but its also clear that they will never go away, but the question is why?As for innocent people being banned believe me it will and probably has happened just look at rainbow6 and that one player he was just that good and the top player at the time didn't want to be beat, so he made up a story that he was using such software and sure enough he was banned only to come back years later and beat the scrub and prove that he was indeed just that dam good.

No one wants to work for anything Getting what you want without earning any of it While others work *hard* for it It's the group who gets but doesn't ear That screws up the whole operation And nearly killed runescape altogether by pushing the creators to the free trade ban in order to save their company. you can only take other people's shit for so long until there's nothing left to take from ones who worked hard for it Or they get so fed up they bout shut down the entire operation trying to stop you. So keep botting You will be to blame when another game screwing update is added to stop lazy people from taking what isn't theirs. If you didn't earn it It isn't yours Leave it alone and stop destroying what others have worked very hard for.

I have a guess, and its not a blind guess, its backed by knowledge on how servers actually work, yeah, servers in general When you need to start a server for any kind of service, you view maximum efficiency with the less resources used So, my guess is that they dont look for mouse positions, just camera angle and zoom and position clicked Also, they 99% dont check it every time, i think they check it 1 time/day So if i bot today, the next day they will 'dry' the list of players who played the day before and perform checks on it, with human supervision They most likely are to check coordinates clicked, npcs talked to, camera angle and zoom, and lastly, time played (no mouse positions)

I hear using a touchpad, Wacom pen, or similar hardware throws up a red flag for a false positive. I read about a Reddit story where an account was banned for activity similar to a bot by using a stylus and 800m or something substantial. This might be the case more often than not. Question: If I mistakenly report a player as a bot, will their account be more closely monitored for botting activity? i,e. Do reported accounts go under investigation or heavier scrutiny with Botwatch?

Tips for people who want to bot.. Make sure that the bot you're using has an anti-ban! Don't use one that doesn't have this feature, because your chances of getting banned is pretty high. A bot with an anti-ban feature will decrease the chance of getting banned tremendously. Also, don't bot through out the whole day. Make sure you bot for a couple of hours, and then play regularly to prevent the account from looking suspicious under Jagex's anti-bot system. The only reason why I would bot was because I just hated the fact that I had to make a new account and start from scratch after the release of Old School RS and EOC. I had several accounts that I did not bot Pre-EOC (Best era of RS). But yeah :/
