I'm all in favor of including animations. The woman talks too fast and it's hard to picture the saponification process (and the forming of the ester bond) or what interfacial tension is by just listening.
@sublime_tv5 жыл бұрын
My ears are getting tension just by listening. People need to understand that when others don't know what you're talking about that it's best to talk slower. Not retardedly slow, but still. Also, animations help greatly.

I super appreciate this refresher of what i learned in cosmetology school 35 years ago. Happy and surprised i remembered it as well as i do. I'll be sharing this in my soaping group if allowed. Fantastic! I would love it if you could do one on the difference between soap as you've explained here and detergents in soaps. I make detergent free soap and I'd like to be able to better explain why they are not good for skin. I know, but i don't KNOW KNOW! I wanna KNOW KNOW! You know?!?🤔

@1:19. During saponification, the fatty acids that separate from TGs do not fuse with hydroxide ions. The fatty acids are removed as carboxylate anions. A negatively charged anion, will not fuse with a negatively charged hydroxide ion. I think what you meant to say was that fatty acids fuze with Na+ or K+ ions. (Depending on the base used)

Wouldn't the soap naturally bond to a bacteria's cellular membrane, and disrupt it, since soap is lipophilic on one end, and the cellular membrane is made of lipids?

The Food and Drug Administration has finally come out on the AB vs hand soap issue and has strongly recommended plain hand soap in all public places (excepting hospitals, unfortunately. The abandonment of AB soap there is probably more critical than most places).

This makes sense for physically dirty hands. But, does soap clean bacteria off your hands after wiping your butt? I’m genuinely curious. Do they slip off, too? And do you undo all the good you did by drying your hands with a used towel?

@SayNoToDemocide18 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend using antibacterial anything unless absolutely necessary or kills 100$ of bacteria. You can lookup on how there is always going to be a small amount of bacteria surviving, which would require more powerful substances to use and soon, the current substances available would become obsolete as stronger and stronger bacteria strains appear.

I've literally argued against someone defending the biblical passages that says that you shouldn't wash your hands (Matthew 15:1-20, Mark 7:1-28, Luke 11:37-44) , two of which particularly state that nothing you eat can make you sick... and the guy legitimately argued that that soap they used wasn't antibacterial, so it was pointless to use it...

To be honest I am disappointed you didn't cover modern surfactant based cleansers. Most bars of soap you buy in the store are actually cleansers not true soap. True soap is bad for the skin compared to modern cleansers bc it compromises the acid mantle of the skin. This is what the cosmetic chemists at The Beauty Brains have to say- "Surfactants (which typically have a pH in the range of 5-7) do not upset the skin’s acid mantle as much soap which has a pH in the range of 9-10. If the mantle is washed away or neutralized by alkaline agents then the skin is more easily damaged or infected. That’s because, without the mantle, the skin cells start to separate and allow more moisture loss which in turn causes tiny cracks in the skin where bacteria can enter. Once the mantle is depleted and the pH of skin gets above 6.5 you’re much more prone to damage and infection." thebeautybrains.com/2014/05/12/is-soap-bad-for-skin/

Tip: Ajax vs dawn Dawn: more powerful cleaner Ajax: cheaper Conclusion: if you want to have a dish soap with more power choose dawn dish soap it has a higher degreasing and cleaning power ajax is still good because it also has good cleaning powers but not as good as dawn's the reason you may want ajax is because it's cheaper so less money spending so this gives you a reason to choose which one you want

Warm water? Why? Does it make any difference if you wash your hands with cold versus warm water?
@Lerkero10 жыл бұрын
Heat makes molecules more active and thus more likely to interact with other molecules. It's easier to wash away dirt with warm water than cold (and it is also why steam cleaning is so effective).
@linited10 жыл бұрын
Warm water is more effective against microorganisms as it tends to denature their proteins. Or rather hot moist heat is more effective. It's a form of sterilisation.
@nixdorfbrazil10 жыл бұрын
Lerkero Ok. I understand that HOT water can make it easier to wash your dishes and clothes. And long term exposure to heat (60 minutes), will sterilize dishes and utensils. But, to wash your hands... you don't want to scald your hands so you are going to likely being washing them with something like 98 F. If you put too much heat, you may burn yourself and you will end up washing out your natural oils of your hands drying them up. You won't be killing any germs, or neither improving the cleanness. I understand that in cold weather, is more comfortable to wash your hands with warm water, and maybe it could help a little bit to take out some of the dirt, but in practical terms it won't make any real difference. Because you have to open the tap, wait for the water to mix, and by the time that it reaches the temperature you're likely to be done.
@nixdorfbrazil10 жыл бұрын
linited To sterilize something you need temperatures over 120 F, that will likely scald your hands. And in the time that most people do their round of soap and water (1 minute), the exposure to warm temperatures won't even make any difference.
@Lerkero10 жыл бұрын
Nix Dorf I don't think the intention is SCALDING hot water. And yes, it is not always practical to wait for water from the faucet to become warm. The point is that warm water would be better for washing than cool water if you have the option to choose.

Sorry, but to a layman like me that's a presentation that rather sucks. First, I don't know where the idea comes from (I also encountered this in vocabulary files for Chinese and Arabic sold on the Apple store) that any learning stuff should be mixed with some - rather uninspiring - background music? Hey, are you really serious? The audience struggles to understand the concept and you pull a rather silly trick to have it lose its focus. Second, some illustrations that help to understand the basic ingredients of soap and how it works would be nice.
