Sharpening SPY27 on the Manix 2 with Greater Dog Venev resin bonded stones. I'll do 100, 240, 400 and 800 grit and show how each finish looks as well as the sharpness with no strop. I'll also talk about the stones and how I clean them. These are great travel stones and even just 1 would be enough to take with you for any needs ypu may have. If you have any questions I'll do my best to answer.

I didn't add that the 800 grit finish I show on the S90V at the end of the video was done on the 100% concentration stones not the 25% concentration ones shown in the video. I will do a video with the bench size stones at a later time.

Venev stones made sharpening so much easier. They wear slowly and clean up easily. By far my best investment in sharpening supplies

Yeah, you just need a Lansky eraser or a big polymer eraser to rub the really stuck-on stuff off and they're good to go. No soak either, you just spray them down or cup water over them.

I absolutely love my venev stones, mine are mostly all 100% and I really like the finish I get. I am testing out some of the 25% now

Great video... Very instructive, I have not used the smaller travel size stones very much. The type of stroke you used is very different from that of a traditional bench stone stroke. (see Rough Rooster knife sharpening for example.) I recently sharpened a wood chipper blade by hand on diamond plates. The stroke use was just like what you were doing with the travel stone. I had to go quickly on the large plate to make the sharpening happen in a reasonable time frame. Thank you again.

Love your channel. I have always used eze lap diamond stones. I have 4 of them. They do well but I may have to try some of these. I also added stropping which is like night and day. . I only hand sharpen. I have no stationary sharpening systems. I enjoy the stress relief of sharpening while watching tv and relaxing. I've put in many hours. Thanks for the great videos.

Great vid G, I put a little choil in my Spyderco knives as well, like your s90v. I use my diamond chainsaw file.. I like how you don't go overboard with theory, you just sharpen knives really well without a lot of hoopla.

These stones are great for the money. I have these same ones and the skinny ones too. One of these days I may pop for the 3x8” stones but I have been happy with these and I also prefer to sharpen in hand with these small ones.

I have one of these in the 1x6” size and 400 and 1000 grit. And these definitively feel much finer that common ceramic stones which Is think is down to these Venev stones being too hard (IMO) snd thus glaze over and load up a bit too fast. I also have 400 and 2000 grit diamond stones from Practical Sharpening and they feel different (and also a bit faster), plus they don’t load up on hardened steel. Still - these little stones are great for travel, but as you said, it makes sense to get the coarser grids. What is interesting, I also have onr of their single sided stones (like for Edge Pro) in 150 grit and that plate is just brutally coarse - too coarse for sharpening, more like for repair of damaged blades. At least that is my impression EDIT: only later in the video I realized, that you are not talking about JIS grit. The stone I mentioned earlier is marked with micrometers (50/40 and 20/15) and JIS (400 and 1000)

Love the videos. I’ve been watching spy27 for some time. I’m pretty hooked on K390 and it’s properties but really want something easier to maintain day to day as a user. Spy27 seems like it gets much better edge retention than everyone initially thought (better than s30v?) and strops and sharpens up in that satisfying way that cruwear does. I was curious if this was your impression and if you had any thoughts?

I wondered if you were still around, I haven't seen a video from you on a while. I enjoyed the content you put up. As far as SPY27 goes it strops back in Cruwear or XHP fashion. It comes back very nice on each strop and the first 4 or 5 it feels as sharp as it was off the stones. In day to day use I think it did a little better than S30V as far as ability to maintain a nice apex and it didn't take the same level of micro damage I see in S30V over a month use window. Even though it feels to the touch like the fine edge goes away faster I enjoy it more than S30V for its other qualities. It's easy to sharpen and comes up very nice and crisp.

Hey Outpost 76, I've been using DMT diafolds and on an occasion re-profiling on a KME with diamond hones while waiting for these to get back in stock. I know you have mentioned in other videos using the diafolds, is this how you hold them and do you use water? This positioning works well for me though I use them dry. Not that the diafolds are expensive, just I don't want to blow through them sharpening M4, K390 and rex45.

I rest the end on a surface edge and hold it at about a 25 degree angle and use them that way. Contact me at my email and I'll give you a link to how I use them.

It’s basically a better S30V isn’t it?
@RealLockheedMartin
@RealLockheedMartin 2 жыл бұрын
@@optimuscrime608 It's in the family of S30V(and not necessarily a strict upgrade) but probably the biggest thing is that Spyderco really cares about its public perception. It's in knives with good geometry, and it looks like the heat treat is good. It definitely performs better than their own S30V stuff. Maybe in the future, once knifetubers stop scrutinizing it so much, they'll get sloppy with it just like they do with S30V, but for right now they're making sure SPY27 is putting its best foot forward.
@lindboknifeandtool
@lindboknifeandtool 2 жыл бұрын
@@optimuscrime608 I actually prefer s30v. It takes and holds a more aggressive edge. Spy27 def blunts more readily. Spy27 will support a more keen edge, and sharpens slightly easier than s30v. Spy 27 also has less raw edge retention, but that can be mitigated by going with a steeper bevel. It’s like vg10 and s30v had a baby, or if elmax was finer with less carbide volume.
@lindboknifeandtool

Spy27 took time to fully grow on me. Maybe after I give my mule a regrind, I’ll prefer it to s30v. I normally run my s30v at 0.010 0.015 behind the edge, and at 30 inclusive. I’d imagine I could take spy down to 0.005 with a 30 inclusive without issue. The better grindability will also probably make the regrind easier than s30v. I understand where the cost comes from, but I wish they could make it cheaper. Oh yeah and spy27 almost “hyper responds” on my Spyderco medium rods. It’s like they’re made for each other.

Spy27 in practice is s35VN that is treated harder than your average s35VN , at 62HRC.

I remember how people were clowning on Spyderco for inventing a shitty cousin to S30V and how it lasted right up until people actually got hands on their SPY27 knives.
