👋Hey guys! Here's the notch remover I used in the episode: itecheverything.com/no-tch Stay tuned for another episode this week, and much more to come! 🔔 Update about the right-side menu bar icons: originally I said you can approximately fit 16 icons plus the clock day and time, but it turns out I was using a scaled resolution (which matched my previous Mac). So with the default scale setting, you can fit several more without running out of room! Also, at the default scale setting, my Photoshop menus DO NOT collide with the notch after all! It only happens when I use my familiar setting. (The default resolution makes things too small for me… oh gosh… I sound old??)

If you make the desktop color completely black or a dark color and hide the menu bar in settings it will leave just a black strip all the way across the top that's what I did to play around with it since you can not drag apps above the stupid notch to fill the entire screen. That's the best you can do. I hope this helps anyone. No app needed.

The fact that they bordered off the upper corners so the mouse doesn't just hide out in the invisible space beyond the rounded edges is nice. But you can hide your mouse under the notch, so that's a thing. Still don't like it, would have preferred to just have bezels up there, or just keep the menu bar on screen at all times if the notch has to exist.

The mouse is likely still able to hide in the notch so that non-notched external displays still behave normally. Otherwise on an external display, the mouse would appear to always jump when it is at the top center of the screen. A lot of people tend to use their laptops docked most of the time, so that would affect a sizeable number of users.
@joemck85
@joemck85 2 жыл бұрын
Hiding the mouse in it can be a feature. The default Windows mouse cursors are "active" at the very top left pixel, so if you have a video player or whatever that fails to hide the cursor, you can put it in the bottom right corner and you only lose one pixel, and it's black. On macOS, unless they've changed it since I used it last, the default cursors' "active" spot is just inside the outline, so you can't hide it as well in a corner. But now you can hide it completely in the notch.

I still would've preferred an extra couple mm on the top bezel. And also if they were gonna have one regardless, I still can't comprehend why they made the notch so big for just a webcam. It doesn't matter if it's "for face ID in the future". Its not there now, so it's pointless to be that large.
@JuneNafziger
@JuneNafziger 3 жыл бұрын
It’s not! Having more space allows for a better webcam because it lets them have a bigger aperture size and let more light in, they also can have a higher resolution that way

The „it’s for faceid in the future“ is not completely stupid from a marketing perspective. Imagine the shittalk and memes when the implement a small notch now and make it bigger in a future iteration. People and tech reviewers would lose their collective shits about that crap 🙄 I also don’t really see the problem so many people have with notches in general. It’s still „additional“ screen space on the sides, not „stolen“ in the middle since the real estate below it is already bigger than before and I can‘t deny that I personally find non uniform display borders kinda more interesting anyway 😅 infinitely better than a black spot hole punch anyway.

I think the thing that really gets me as a 3D designer is not the notch, but the fact that it exists AND the display/display housing are not symmetrical on the top and bottom. We have round corners on top, square on the bottom. Also the lower bezel near the hinge is HUGE by comparison. It’s just visually off… I will say the one thing I think they fixed from the iPhone design is at least the round display corners are concentric now. The iPhone outer radius of the screen corners is slightly bigger than the phone body.

I beg to differ... snazzy labs proved in a video the notch interferes with apps, the consistency of how the menubar is treated when apps aren't in full screen mode compared to when they are shows the menubar can be one smaller width wise or 2. the menubar needs to be dark period because that gap is going to annoy people even when they get use to it, it'll still be their regardless if people get use to the small gap.

By the way, I just tested the new MBPs at a store, and I realized that the mouse will *always* jump to the other side of the notch when you click any menubar item, even if the rightmost one is to the left of the notch. Apple is erring on the side of caution, i.e. whenever there’s an interaction with the menubar, boom, you get a jump.

As weird as it sounds, some people have reported that restoring the mouse pointer back to normal black-and-white instead of using custom colors can fix this issue. That doesn't seem to fix it for everybody, so there's still some investigating to do.

Same thing as full-screen apps. The top row of pixels black-out.

Some glitches will happen with certain third-party apps / applets because the developers truly didn't have time to optimize for this new design, but now they do have time! Software updates will come out and things will be fine. : )

If you force click while moving the mouse, the cursor will jump to the other side of the notch, and if the cursor is underneath, it will pop out.

What happens if you assign this compatibility mode to a random app and leave that open in the background (hidden, minimized, etc.) -- can you scale the notch out of existence permanently?
@ComputerClan
@ComputerClan 3 жыл бұрын
Yes : ) At least in macOS 12.0. In the 12.0.1 update, I can't get the feature to work at all-despite the checkbox being on. Weird! Maybe it's a bug.

Hello Clan I actually do like the notch , I just bought the Mac but the issue I've been going full screen the last 3 days and ever windows was going really full screen without having the bar on top. Now the bar is there all the time . I don't like it . I have tried to go on Docs & Menu bar to selection the automatic option at the both but it still there . any ideas ?
@MyDogSteppedOnaBeee
@MyDogSteppedOnaBeee 3 жыл бұрын
If you make the desktop color completely black or a dark color and hide the menu bar in settings it will leave just a black strip all the way across the top that's what I did to play around with it since you can not drag apps above the stupid notch to fill the entire screen. That's the best you can do. I hope this helps anyone. No app needed.

Hey, Ken, I've got a question, what happens with the menubar when you set non-native resolution with something like EasyRes (or just straight up the full native unscaled resolution of the screen)?Apple configured the menubar height for each scaled resolution option, but I doubt they did that for every possible resolution that you can set. I like things very small, so I've been using the non-native unscaled "one step below the full resolution of the screen" on all retina macbooks I owned because even the "more space" scaled option doesn't give me nearly enough space.
@ComputerClan
@ComputerClan 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I have not tested that yet! I can maybe try that soon.
@ComputerClan
@ComputerClan 3 жыл бұрын
Answer! The menu bar still extends a few pixels below the notch (less pixels than default). The text in the menu bar and everything else in the UI gets really small.

My biggest question is for games with ui elements at the top of the screen Like how will game devs be anle to prevent their ui from being blocked My idea at lest is to make a setting to move the ui at the top of the screen down below the notch but maybe there is another way

I'm assuming the same full-screen app behavior will be inherited, but I have not tested games yet. I'll have to see if I can use any of my existing games under Rosetta.

the 'Notch' is an annoying trend that needs to die. i honestly hate it aesthetically and conceptually. I'd rather just have the bezel, the arbitrary intrusion in screen space just triggers me like having something hanging over the top of your screen.

I agree. The notch can still be smaller, slimmer and thinner. The sensors inside aren’t that huge at all. I feel like they did this on purpose so in the future, they can come with a newer Mac and present a smaller notch on stage
