While most dogs love and bond with every member of the family, there’s often one person they’re especially drawn to.
In this video, we will talk about how dogs choose their favorite human and how you can become your dog’s favorite person.
Positive associations
Dogs play favorites depending on associations. If a person is the source of good and yummy stuff, dogs form a bond.
The more positive interactions you have with your dog, the more they’ll associate you with positivity.
On the other hand, dogs often react poorly to individuals with whom they have bad associations.
If you want to be the favorite, make a list of your dog’s favorite activities, and do those things more often. Make sure to limit negative interactions, such as harsh discipline or scolding.
Be the source of comfort
Dogs have natural instincts to be alert and on the lookout for danger. It is instinctual for canines to want to create space between them and what they consider to be a threat.
There are particular behaviors and characteristics that can make people less appealing to dogs.
For example, dogs find loud noises or sudden movements to be stressful. Some dogs may even maintain distance from people who behave in ways that are distressing to them. Some kids can be distressing to dogs because they behave erratically. They may tease or push a dog when it is sleeping.
If your dog views you as a source of safety rather than a source of disruption, they will be more likely to be drawn to you.
This is another reason why we should never shout at our dogs because it causes stress and anxiety.
It’s in their blood
Dogs often differ in their temperament and personality based on their breed and ancestry. This means some dog breeds are more likely to bond and attach to a single person
Breeds that tend to bond strongly to one person include Grey hounds, Shiba Inus, Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, Akitas, and Basenjis.
And breeds that seem to love just about everybody equally include Boston Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Boxer, Irish Setter, and Labrador Retriever.
Similar Personalities
Another factor that goes in to how dogs choose their favorite humans is personality.
Just as people tend to choose friends who match their personality and energy levels, dogs often choose their favorite human based on the same criteria.
For example, a high-energy dog will naturally be attracted to an equally-active person. A dog that’s more laid back and prefers quiet over noise will choose a person who values those same things.
If you find yourself more active than your dog, slow your activity levels and relax your energy to match theirs-they’ll appreciate the effort.
Use "Dog-directed" speech
Scientists from the University of York have found that using "dog-speak" improves our bond with dogs. "Dog-directed" speech involves speaking in a high-pitched voice with exaggerated emotion - in a similar way that adults often talk to babies.
It’s how they were raised
Many dogs bond hardest to whoever cares for them during their key socialization period, which occurs between birth and six months.
At this age, puppies’ brains are incredibly receptive to new experiences, and their early social experiences influence them for the rest of their lives.
But remember, this doesn’t mean you’re in trouble if you got your dog later in life.
Dogs don’t pick who they like solely based on these individual characteristics. Your association with a dog plays just as a significant role.
Quality time
A dog’s favorite human is often the person who puts effort into spending quality time with them.
Quality time is all about strengthening your bond. It’s fostering a deeper connection than just two living beings who happen to be in the same house.
Dogs tend to build close ties with people who show them the most attention and love.
Binge watching TV together and other passive activities will have less impact on your relationship than an engaging game of fetch or a challenging training routine.
Their body language matters
Did you know that many dogs don't like to be kissed or hugged? And that they don’t want to be interrupted during dinnertime?
Your canine companion can express a lot through their body language if you know what to look for. By understanding how dogs communicate, you can help prevent stress and make them feel at ease. This will build your loving relationship and increase their trust for you.
To know if you are your dog's favorite human, you'll have to analyze your relationship together as well as how they interact with other people in your household.
When a dog chooses you as a favorite, they will begin to foster a much closer bond. You shouldn't be surprised if they sleep next to you, follow you around, lean against you, or steal your stinky clothes. These are the personal and close behaviors which undoubtedly indicate a dog feels close to you. When they give them to you more than others, it is pretty certain you are their favorite person.

When my dog died, I drove 7 1/2 hours to get my new puppy. I had placed a deposit on him and named him Charley. When I got there, Charley paid no attention to me and walked off to smell the flowers. A little black ball of fluff followed me everywhere, even into the barn. I looked at the breeder and asked if I could have that one. She became my Charley. She is now 17 months old and boy is she my dog. She sleeps with me, lays on my discarded pjs when I’m taking a shower and lays at my feet when I am sitting. Sometimes you pick the dog, and sometimes the dog picks you.

My friends dog had puppies, and when they were ready to find homes, a lady came over and couldn't decide. She spent a little time with each (6) and was having a hard time. She made to leave, and said, "I'm leaving now, who is going with me?" When she turned around, one of the pups had front paws on fence, tail wagging, ready to go! She took him home.

I guess dogs instinctively know who are their owners . Once i drove with someone to pick a dog as a gift for a friend. The puppy wasn't very impressed by us and kinda sad. When the dog met the future owner he suddenly became very happy and licked her face all over like they always knew each other

I knew my dog was mine when I saw her picture on the shelter website. When I called about her they told me no one had even asked for her in the 8 months she had been there. They said people thought she looked mean with her piercing eyes and the fact she’s all black. She was turning one the day after I got her and had spent most of her time afraid in the loud shelter. Our personalities matched each other really well, and she handled my son’s autism very well without getting too upset when he was loud. She spends all her time with me and I love her so much! She has helped me through my depression.

I had a wonderful dog named Solo, I wanted a dog so bad after getting married and I drove over an hour to this shelter and there he was. Not a single bark came from him. He had obviously been not loved and taken care of and I stepped away to put my bag down, so I could hold him and he let out this little whine and that was it. I took him home and he was my dog, we had a very special bond and he had quite the little personality! I miss him terribly.

I loved that dog so much. I have had 2 dogs (onle 1 at time) since i lave tgem too. My first dog on my own, will always be special to me. She was my soul dog.

We went to a shelter to adopt a dog and one of the dogs came right over and sat on my daughters lap and wouldn’t leave us lol. The shelter let us take her home for a trial period to make sure it was a good fit and the dog immediately latched onto my husband. The shelter didn’t know her history or anything but the second that dog met my husband she was his dog. To the point we named her Shadow because she would follow him step for step no matter where he went (and she was all black fur.) She IS his Shadow lol. We recently brought home another rescue and this one seems to be more attached to me. I’m not working now and I’m doing all the feeding and walking and training. My husband laughed and said, “Well that’s definitely your dog now” It’s weird how they kind of relate better to different people.

I've had dogs all my life. I've loved them all. But with a few of my dogs, the bond was immediate and very strong. Can't explain it, but just like with people, sometimes there's a special friend you are immediately drawn to. My current dog was re-homed. I was expecting her to maybe be a bit sad at first, missing the family she spent the first 3 years of her life with. They were a lovely family & she was well treated. Their circumstances changed and they had to give her up. I was the lucky one who got her. When I brought her home, I thought she would probably have a few rough days, missing her family, until she settled in with me and got used to the change. I was very surprised! She never acted upset at the change, loved my fenced yard, and seemed relaxed and happy with me. She is a very sweet 3 yr old who liked me immediately and wanted to be around me all the time. We're a good fit, (I like 'velcro' dogs) and she & I bonded quickly. As soon as I saw her, somehow I knew we'd be a good match. Apparently, she felt the same.

My dog passed away in 2013 and had him as a puppy for 9 years and passed away from cancer of the mouth and had to put him asleep and said would never go through that again but in 2018 my daughters talked me in to rescue a dog, went to a shelter and this dog came up to me and started kissing me so I knew Mickey was coming home with me but unfortunately only lived for 2 years and passed away on the living room floor and I layed with him for 2 hours while he was fighting for his life but knew he was dying. It's been rough but very glad I had both in my life and know on my second rescue and it's been 4 years.

My dog used to sleep with me every night for probably 2 years. Then in October of last year my parents moved halfway across the country with the dog. When I went to visit for a few days for Christmas my dog freaked out for about 20 minutes when I got there. The entire time I was there she pretty much stayed by my side and at night she ran to the guest room to sleep with me. Even after not seeing me for almost three months she wanted to sleep with me every night while I was there.

When we were dog sitters the dogs always gravitated toward me, even though my husband fed them and mostly walked them because at one point I had fractured my hip. One dog who was happy sleeping downstairs refused to do this when I fractured my hip and insisted on sleeping on our bed. If I got up in the night because I was in pain. the dog would get up and follow me into the spare room, sitting on the spare bed with me until I was ready to go back. She was really like a little mother towards me which was so sweet.

I believe dogs pick us. I was with my brother looking for a new dog. We went to a rescue and walked between the 2 rows of dogs in their cages. One after an other came to the front to paw me and scrape the front of the cage literally saying “ take me, take me”, but never to my brother who was walking further away from me, I felt so depressed afterwards, he ended up with a new dog, that didn’t want him, the dog ended up being his wife’s dog, but the dog didn’t work out for them, I took the dog, trained it, because they didn’t, and he was a one person dog, he admired me soooooo much, the best dog ever. He did not like my brother at all.

As soon as she would get out of the car, she would walk right through the door and do a tour of all the rooms and offices by herself in order to happily greet everyone. Till this day the staff of the vet office use her as an anecdote to prove that not all animals hate the vet. All the dogs I’ve had before and after her hate the vet. After having to put down 3 senior dogs in less than 4 months It was so heartbreaking I could not even think about adopting another one After much persuasion from my wife and adult daughter I agreed to go look at a local dog rescue center (NY bully crew) Upon walking into the puppy room. I noticed a little guy in a crate all by himself while other crates had multiple dogs together I asked the girl Why is he all by himself? She said he was the runt and the other dogs were picking on him When I originally walked over to crate he cowered and went back into the corner of the crate As I paid him a little more attention He came up to side if crate and lifted his paw to me I knew right then he was the dog for me The girl who works at the rescue said he had never done that to anyone and usually avoid any human contact He literally picked me He was 8 weeks old at that time and he is now 5 years old and is my partner in crime He practically comes every where with us We have taken him on several vaccinations and is part of the family He is super protective of anyone he knows, and is absolutely in love with my grandchildren and them with him

Around 7 years ago(cant believe its been that long already) when I was 22, my late father asked if I wanted this beautiful 1 year-old female blue weimerainer, and I distinctly remember having been rather depressed at the time, and unhappy with my father and I responded that I wanted her, since we unfortunately had to put down the first dog I ever had that I had got for my 10th birthday(also a weim) shortly before this. The family who had this girl was relocating from Florida to Australia for some reason, and didnt want to subject her to the long scary flight because she was a bit of an anxious pup and a bit ornery(and to this day, she still loves to moan and whine, and growl but she never does so with any ill intention, its just her way of saying "im a princess and youre bothering me"). Next thing I know, my parents are driving 12 hours to meet the family half way to get her, and I had plans to go to a bar in NYC for a friends birthday that night. Fast forward to that night, I get home around 3am to lay eyes on my Eve for the first time who was still in her crate, and crying. I immediately took her out, and put her in my bed and she curled up into a ball being her moany, growly, and ornery self, but not crying any longer and she slept with me comfortably that night. And the rest is basically history from there, Im pretty sure from that very moment she knew I was her person. She has been attached to me ever since and in my bed, sleeping with me every single night. Shes still a bit anxious and ornery, but I think Ive soothed a lot of her anxiety just as shes done the same for mine and shes become the princess shes clearly always thought of herself as living a very comfortable, happy life. Shes the first dog ive had that was truly mine and she absolutely cannot be separated from me, even if im laying down with my gf(in my/her bed) she gets jealous and has to be in the bed as well, and not being in the room at all is absolutely not an option to her. I always loved my 2 weimerainers that I had when I was younger(and love dogs in general) but Eve and I have a very special bond that cant be quantified. Very shortly before my dad passed away, he had completely surprised us with rescuing another female weimerainer pup, this was was extremely skittish, nervous, and clearly VERY underfed(remember being able to see her ribs poking through her skin), it was apparent she desperately needed a loving home and despite my dad knowing that he likely didnt have much longer with us, he graciously saved her despite not telling us a thing about doing so. And I couldnt be happier that he did that 5 years ago, not only is she special because shes a constant reminder of my father but shes the mushiest, most grateful, loyal, loving, adorable, smart dog that one could ask for. It was also largely my job to break down the barriers she had up due to the poor treatment she received from the scum that I rescued her from, she was so nervous that any semi erratic movement, or slightly raising your voice, or loud noise would spook her and shed sometimes urinate on the floor because she would be so anxious. It took a year or two to really, fully break her barriers down and melt away her anxiety but it was nothing that constant love and attention couldnt fix, and to be fair..it was extremely easy to love such a sweet, loving dog despite her past experiences. With some help from her big sister, she also took to me as well and it wasnt long before she was also sleeping in my bed too and taking advantage of all the cuddles and love she could get. Today, shes now a confident, incredibly sweet and loving, incredibly grateful, very smart girl who also happens to be an absolute beast of an athlete and has amazing natural hunting instincts with high drive and the will to please her family...my dad really could not have rescued a better weimerainer before passing away. Shes taught me a lot, and through her my father has instilled certain things in me despite not being with us anymore, for one Ill always strictly rescue any future dog and Ive learned how to be a better leader of my pack(whether it be for my dogs, or my family) in his absence and im sure ill take that experience and apply some of the wisdom towards when I have a child of my own even though he wont be here to give me any direct guidance.

After seeing this, it’s obvious my dog choose me her very first day at home. Both me and my mom share the duties of feeding our family dog Bindi, but I think our poochie loves me when I do it more because every time she eats, regardless of whether I fed her or not, ALWAYS comes to my room, which is right down the hallway (very small house) and “thanks me” for the yummy meal. Plus she’s become a lot more loving the past few years as she got older. She chose me as her snuggle partner, but she’s always been close with me. We used to have this fun past time of watching my Saturday morning show one year, season 5 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I would set an alarm so I could watch it early on the HD channel so I wouldn’t get any spoilers. (My parents allowed me to watch it on the upstairs TV so long as I would be quiet) I’d always take her outside and she’d curl up in my lap on the couch and the minute the intro music started she would always turn her head to see what kind of interesting aliens would be on the screen. Then when I would be doing my college work at my desk, I’d get up and not even realize she was right at my feet. Like I said, it’s obvious my doggie just chose me as her person right from the very first day

My boy is literally my son, he's my best friend, my everything... & Everyone, including my poor husband wonders he's ALWAYS "up my butt" if anyone else calls him he's like meh no thanks but if I call him he comes INSTANTLY! He's extremely spoiled as heck, my husband says "oh ya he's definitely your child" lol because his personality & mine are just perfect together.... If I'm angry or sad, he knows automatically.... They'll be some days he wants to be stubborn & not eat his food because I didn't make him "his favorite one" that day or something so my husband will sit there trying so hard to get him to eat it he'll just go lay back down so I'll get up & I honest to God talk to him like a human 🤷🏻‍♀️ I say to him "Come on bub let's eat your nomnoms I know you're hungry, please eat for me... Pleaseeeeee" & then he gets RIGHT UP & goes to eat😂🤷🏻‍♀️ that's no lie lol hey they can understand us you know LMAO I'm extremely happy to be his favorite person though, because he's my definite world!

My family dog loves me the most, it is beyond obvious. And it always surprises people when they see me stern with him. They question how I can get mad at him. I tell them, I’m not mad at him, but it is important to speak to them in a certain way when they behave badly and a certain way when they behave well. It also doesn’t hurt that I take him for about 30 kilometers of walks a week.😂

The notion that a dog will react to past negative experience has to be true. Our dog came to us later in her life. She loved all of us-except when I walked down a set of stairs! She would play with me, sleep with me, eat from my hand, but, when I, and only I, walked down any set of stairs she tried to kill me-well, not really kill-but she certainly had a bad experience with someone who looked like me on a set of stars. Thankfully, she’s gotten past that and will now readily trust me on a set of stairs!

As a kid I owned a book called "Animals Around Us", which had a section about dogs. On one page it explained that when you're choosing a puppy to adopt you should always pick the one who walks right up to you to say hello, and going by a lot of comments on this video that advice was right on the money!

I acquired a little chihuahua from a homeless guy in a nearby town a half hour from my house. The little Chi had run away from home and was basically wary of people. I gave my word to get her a good home. She wouldn't go with anybody more than a day before being returned to me. I finally realized; She decided I was her mom. I had two spoiled happy dogs already, so I couldn't stay in my apartment. Because of Bailey, I had to give notice at my apartment. I bought a house and had to buy everything for a house. Eight years later, she's my belly bear. Mommy's girl. AND I own a house. Will we listen to the precious little ones and build our world around them? Can't believe how much my life has changed looking back.

When I was 18 I hadn’t ever had a dog of my own, but we had a couple as I was growing up. I always cherished the family dogs and when I moved out, a good friend at the time was also turning 18 and wanted his own dog as he claimed he never got to have one growing up. I went with him, helped him pick one out and we went on our way but I could somehow tell in the back of my mind, that dog he just chose was my soul mate. She was so sweet and picked me from the beginning. My friend had her for almost a year before he had to move back to my house and she came with. Immediately she began sleeping on the floor in my bedroom, wouldn’t listen to him anymore. Only obeyed me and one day came back a pregnant dog after getting out for a whole night. Several months later she chose to have her puppies IN MY BED while I was on vacation. I raised those puppies and claimed her as my dog as she clearly thought of herself as such. Today she is 13 and thriving and I could never thank that friend enough for finding my dog. She means the entire world to me and as she’s entering her final hand full of years, I’m wondering what am I going to do without my best friend? She is here now, always has been, and always will be. She is mg person as I am hers. And I don’t want to imagine life without her. I hope I find a companion that is half of what she has been to me. She is the most wonderful little girl I have ever imagined and it will break my heart to see her gone. I hope it happens to me first. Cheers 🥂

When I was growing up, we always had animals because Mom loved them so. Cats always seemed easier to care for so that’s what I gravitated to. When I married my husband, he had 2 cats and so did I. Perfect. Their ease fit our lifestyle. About 10 years into the marriage, he started in on us getting a dog. But dogs are a lot of work and responsibility, I said. They need a lot more attention. Like having a child! Which we did not have. Over the next few years, he kept saying dog and I kept saying no. About 8 years ago, our lifestyle changed enough that a dog seemed feasible. He picked him out. A 1 year old black Lab mix rescue. Precious boy. Sweet, friendly, happy, and could not love ME more! LOL I feel bad for my husband. The dog does love him, too, but he is obviously MY companion and protector. I only hope one day we’ll have a dog that adores my husband as much. 🙂

Oh, yeah. My brother in law treats each of the 4 dogs the same way. Shouting or using both hands together to make a loud noise at them if they're in trouble or doing something. For about 3 of them, I just firmly tell them no on whatever they're doing wrong and give them a light spanking. Blitz hurt his little tail when he was a baby, so if I were to do the spanking for him, it would hurt him, so all he gets is a firm voice. He's also the oldest, so he knows better. The dog that was supposed to be just a foster, Luna, used to be a stray. None of them have ever brought in a stray, but I have experience with stray cats back when I was a kid because she brought one in and I brought in my older cat Buffy. We don't know her experience as a stray or how long she was a stray for, but Luna only likes my brother in law half the time (that's when he's not yelling or raising his voice even if it's not at her). That's why we always say that she'd be better off with me or his brother when his brother moves out, because I feel like being in a home where no one is yelling at her would be best, but then she'd miss her Kozmo, and being in an apartment, I couldn't take Kozmo in. He's a big dog. Luna's a small dog. I believe that's why she barks so much. I got her barking under control some when I dog sat last, but with the way they treat them all the same as if they're all the same just isn't the right situation for a former stray dog. Blitz doesn't like loud noises, either. He hides behind the couch when my brother in law and sister are having a fight or there's a thunderstorm. Tula is our cuddler and autoimmune and quiet as a mouse unless my brother in law's brother is going in and out or someone's at the door or she decides she's gonna challenge dad when dad yells at her for something. Kozmo is the happy go lucky dog unless he's feeling down like when he's sick (doesn't happen often). Kozmo is supposed to be a ridgeback with a cross of yellow lab. Blitz isn't that affectionate, and he'll tell you when he doesn't wanna be touched. He has this grumble growl he does when he doesn't want to be touched, or when he's having a bad ear day from the weather pressure (he has ears that stand up straight). Tula is the second oldest and she does nothing but want to cuddle with someone or be picked up like a baby or little toddler (she's a pocket pit). Her downfall is eating her siblings' poop which gets her sick because of the chicken in their dog food. She and Blitz are both our couch potatoes. They just lounge there unless Tula and Luna are playing. Kozmo barks at trash person every Wednesday. Lays on the living room floor and howls at the noise of the trash person picking up the trash. Lol. And you make a mess or drop food and he's right on that mission to pick it up for you if Blitz doesn't find the morsel of food first. Kozmo is just one bit funny dog. They all love me I think because they get the most attention and love from me. I can be on the couch with the little dogs while giving Kozmo attention all at the same time. I'm like the cool Aunt that you can't wait to see again. 😂

I wondered whether a dog could actually have 2 favourites til now, when my Brittany/Beagle mix had to be put down she licked me hand, I knew she loved me to bits but I sometimes felt I was a bit harsh with her and even mistreated her at times. I had no excuses even though I went through depression, I still don't think I was a good enough owner for her yet she always cheered me up, followed me everywhere. My girlfriend has a Fox Terrier now and I take him for walks, feed him and therefore he definitely likes me, but it'll never quite be the same bond. Maybe he can feel my ongoing attachment to my Brittany yet I vow to treat him well out of love for both him and my other half.

Is it possible that the dog has a favourite person for different roles? Cause my Mastador (mastiff/Black Lab mix) behaves very differently, and comes to me, my mom and my brother in very different ways, for very different reasons. he loves my Mom's motherly nature towards him. Also, she is an avid hunter, and loves to share some small pieces with him. He loves my brother's playtime with him, and will often steal his bed, and will drag him around whenever he holds the leash. He comes to me when he needs comfort, or reassurance. I know I was the one that was always close by when he was a little puppy. So I think he loves us, in very different ways.

My dog picked me within 3 seconds of meeting me. My brother and I were going to dog sit for 2 weeks while the owners were out of town. My brother mentioned that he had to woo the next door neighbor's dog for 4 months before she would let him pet her before the dog came over to our house. He brought her over, she looked at me for 3 seconds, then came over to me, sat on my feet and leaned into my legs asking me to pet her. Basically, that was 15 months ago. The people next door never asked for her back, and we didn't offer her back. When I move out in late June, early July she is coming with me. My brother told the neighbors I was taking her, ansd they were glad since this dog never got along with their other dog, so they had to keep them separated 100 percent of the time. They love her, but due to this situation, they couldn't give her the life they wanted for her.

I think there must be something wrong with our vet as a person. Our first dog, Molly, hated him from the first time she set eyes on him. He was the ONLY person in her life that she reacted to in any such manor. After she passed, we got two puppies to take her place. Sure enough, they don’t care much for him either (he was the first vet they met). It’s gotta be him!
