If I walk into the house and there are chewed bits of stuff on the floor, I generally don't have to say anything. I get the head bow, sheepish smile, and the slink away. I feign disappointment for a moment, and then all is forgiven. So long as they don't get into something that could hurt them, I try to be as understanding as I can. I can replace a remote control or a pair of shoes, but I can't replace a beautiful soul that simply made a mistake. God love and keep them all.

I recently had a heartbreaking experience when one of my dogs (pitbull mix) attacked and ultimately killed one of my other dogs. Not sure what made the dog snap but the dog he attacked was elderly, non-aggressive and they had lived in the same house for two years in harmony. I had no choice but to take the aggressor to the pound and it broke my heart as I was close with both dogs and lost both in the same day. Even though the dog obviously sensed my anger and disappointment and tried in his way to make amends, he had to go as I couldn't take the risk that he wouldn't harm our third dog, or a human now that blood had been drawn. The Pound put him down as he was now an "aggressive animal". I hope I never have to go through anything like that again. Before the "incident" he was a great dog and that is how I choose to remember him.

I've been volunteering to walk dogs at a local shelter. There's one whom I've been trying to teach to be less reactive to trucks and automobiles. I get the feeling that many dogs end up in shelters simply because people don't know how to teach them effectively, or don't care to.

Dogs can definitely "Say Sorry". Some dogs just know how to experess it more clearly. Other sodgs in subtle ways. Dogs even know how to "thank us" e.g. when i'm cleaning up my Pug after a walk and i'm low enough...near his level , he'll lick my face...to say "...thak you for taking care of me"...considigner cleaning him up a an act of kindess/love. While my other dog saw it differently...didn't like the grooming /cleaning ...maybe because hi first trip to the groomer was traumatic....my current Pug expects it and will tell me if i didn't wipe clean a paw...if i skip it... How much the express ha to do with their individual personalities....but dogs are capable of so many feelings and comple thoughts. Some dogs will shock us a to what they are capable of understanding...somethings learnt on their own e.g. how my dog requires confirmation i got his message by telling him so e.g. that it's my dinner time and that i should start preparing, or nack time, his walk time.....or he will stay on me till i Do give him confirmation... They are so psecial....why "...dog's ARE man's best freind"....why cruelty should be punished to the nth degree 9e.g. abandonment/physical abuse0...

I have 6/dogs. They know when they have done wrong. I think that they truly say they are sorry. One of mine distracts one dog, if there is conflict between two of them. She has a great deal of empathy. I am a therapist. This one sits next to me during meetings. If a client is sad, she will go over to them, and lick their hands. Another one knows exactly when it’s time to end. This doesn’t mean an hour is up. She whines and gets up, ready to walk the client out to the gate. All of them are astute about human behavior, and their own feelings and conflicts.

My German Shepherd Dog has never once raided the trash even when left at home alone, she carried shoes up from the basement twice in her life as a puppy but has never touched one since and is nearly 8 years old. She has never bit anyone except me when playing as a pup. She did use to tear up her beds for about the first two years when locked in her crate at night but doesn't do it anymore. She never gets locked in her crate anymore but if I have to leave more than four hours she will go down to the basement and lay down in her crate even though she isn't limited to where she can go.

I always tried to remember that the mistakes of my dog usually was my mistake. If he had an accident indoors, it was not his fault, but mine for not taking him outside when he needed to / not recognizing his signals that he needed to go outside. It was important to me to try and never get angry at a dog for something that was not his fault. Signal that a behavior is not acceptable by changing the sound of your voice, like when clearly saying no, or sternly saying the dogs name. But not with any anger in the voice. Just a stern no. I wish I had been better at that than I was, but my dog knew he was loved.

I had a dog who had a specific type of growl as her word for "please" - took me quite awhile to figure that out, even though i had her from a pup! Oftentimes it was accompanied by pawing at me, and when I patted her, it all stopped, which was how i eventually figured it out :p Wagging tail is DEFINITELY NOT something you want to misinterpret! I have a story, and I knew what was going on but no-one was listening, and it ended in a bite!

Often what they are reacting to is the caretakers' anger. Dogs live in the present moment. They do not relate to what humans say as much as the emotion (like anger), so they act submissively to the tone of voice or emotion of the caretaker.

@Camphorous
@Camphorous 5 ай бұрын
It means she figured out that you get mad when x happens, but she might not be able to do 2+2 and figure out that she caused x to happen. Example: You are mad when dog rips up a cushion. If you rip up a cushion yourself and scatter the fluff all over the room and then leave. When you come back, the dog will expect you to be mad and start acting "guilty" even though you're the one who made the mess.
@cinemantics231
@cinemantics231 5 ай бұрын
I am not sure how this behavior is in any way different from how humans process and express guilt. If dogs can understand when they've done wrong and make physical gestures to restore a positive relationship, they're pretty much emulating humans. Sure, we don't show our bellies or bring toys, but that's just semantics. The core motivation is the same.

I’ve heard that when you scold a dog for something - even immediately after the deed & in a calm voice - they won’t know what they did wrong. Therefore yr just making the dog feel bad without any teaching effect. But if this is true, why do trainers say to praise the dog right away when they did something good? Following the logic that if the dog doesn’t understand the basis of a scold, how would they understand the basis of the praise?

Dogs get sorry because we teach them what is bad, what is good behavior. So, this is not a natural thing for dogs to be sorry... if they chew a stick in the wild, nobody cares. They would fight like other wild animals, without any guilt or feeling of remorse, except for mourning the losses of family members, mourning is a natural response among many wild pact animals. People can be funny, or wrong when diagnosing these sort of situations, some thinking dogs were born naturally with this ability to be sorry, or express human like emotions. Dogs are not even a naturally occurring animal, and without thousands of years worth of human intervention and breeding of wolves, dogs would never have existed with such human like emotions or behavior. There's no such thing as "natural dog behavior" since it's mostly learned human behavior that dogs learn, identical to human psychology. Cats are a little bit different, cause they mostly bred themselves, are more independent animals, but feline breeding is definitely a thing as well. Cats rarely get sorry, not at all. The whole concept that moral value can be found in nature, is a bunch of crazy talk, it's all learned human behavior except for mourning death, which is instinctual. Moral value is non instinctual, since some people lack any moral values to speak of, it's obviously non instinctual behavior, there's no agreements among wild animals except for mutual survival. Moral code is a agreement made among humans with animals sometimes, that is more detailed than just survival, we have whole lists of non acceptable social behaviors, like excessive barking or chewing of shoes or couches. We taught the animals how to be friends, cats and dogs. No other species on Earth besides a human, can tame a tiger and become friends with it, teach it to become life partners with a dog. It's part of our special uniqueness to train other animals and breed them, teach them civilized behavior. It's almost like the key to evolution lies totally in decision making and civilized behavior, wow. It's not about controlling life, but allowing life to flourish. Why don't people talk more about what triggers evolution, to take place ?. I think we know what it is, for sure, empathy and using our brains, lead to our evolution as a species. When we subvert life or nature, it leads to unnatural or bad circumstances for all life on the planet. The Florida Everglades is a natural disaster right now of human incompetence, the invasive species are a literal nightmare. People in Florida, they do dumb stuff like throw dozens of exotic fish from around the globe into a swimming pool that's abandoned, this sort of crap happens all the time down there, it's sad. Some bird comes, scoops up a fish and drops into a lake, 10 years later and boom we have a sand worm infestation, everyone in Florida gets eaten alive. That is eventually what will happen, if stupidity continues to thrive down there. Why do we confuse evolution with genetic mutations, when one is a defect of nature and one is not defective ?. Anyone who says the human decision making process, is not directly related to our evolution, obviously good decisions lead to our evolution, bad ones lead to something which is a defective mutation of nature. There's definitely a plan for nature before we got here, haha. This whole idea where nothing in the universe matters, just forget it dude, I lost enough friends cause of this goofy ideology of Nihilism. Our decisions matter, everything matters including thoughts and your actions, space time, mathematics, your knowledge level, it all matters. Knowledge works like a pyramid, there's a lot of work at the bottom once you get to the top of the heap, you have a greater view. Trapping and torturing wolves and then breeding them, not a cool decision early hunter gatherers made. Wolves are far genetically superior to dogs, as a result of that decision, it wasn't actually good to mess with the wolves at all. Prolonged human contact changed them, physically mutating them into dogs, how did that happen ?. You would think someone out there would want to know why, I guess not. We love our dogs, but they are genetically mutated wolves and they suffer cause of us anyways, bulldogs are so mutated they can barely breathe and I find it so sad.
