This entire chapter is so excellently written. From Dooku's perception of the different characters as he attuned himself ahead of the duel. The way The Chancellor switches between his personas by using his two names Palpatine and Sidious. The triple Fake-out between Dooku trying to convert Anakin, the Jedi switching their combat styles mid-fight and Sidious' Betrayal of Dooku. And finally Dooku's ultimate realization of what lies at the core of the Sith Philosophy: "Treachery is the way of the Sith"

I love how much this duel mirrors the final duel in ROTJ. A Sith Lord and a Jedi duel while Palpatine spectates and an epic space battle is happening in the background. In the movie before this one, the Jedi and the Sith fought, and the Sith won by cutting off the hand of the Jedi, who now has a mechanical hand. Feeling that someone the Jedi loves is in peril, he gives into his anger and attacks uses the youth and energy advantage he has over the older Sith Lord in an aggressive assault that ends with the Sith Lord losing (at least one of) his hands. The Sith Lord is then left at the mercy of the Jedi, as Palpatine instructs the Jedi to kill his defenseless opponent, wanting the Jedi to use this moment to turn toward the dark side and become his new apprentice. The Jedi is left with a choice. In one he chooses to give in to his anger, which leads to hate and suffering. In the other, he chooses to let the Sith Lord redeem himself, which leads to peace. Of course, both duels ultimately end with Anakin killing a Sith Lord.

I also love in the novel how Dooku mocks Anakin for losing his hand. Being disgusted by him for using a robotic hand. But Palpatine is like "then why did you cut it off?" The ROTS novel is insanely good. The amount of tension you feel throughout it is incredible. Having an amazing movie and book about that story is amazing. This entire scene with Dooku vs Anakin is so well paralleled with Luke vs Vader as well. Such a great scene.

I think the same way in terms of his initial reasons in turning away from the Jedi and at that point he had a genuine desire to both help the galaxy at large, and rebuild the Jedi into what he felt they should have been. However like all those that start tapping into the dark-side, he became corrupted and his ideals and plans became corrupted along with this. Towards the end of the clone wars, he had become a monster; he had committed many atrocities, and his plans for the galaxy changed from wanting to genuinely help rebuild it into a more just society for all, into a fascist regime - with intent to place humans at the top of a hierarchy, and both oppress all other alien races, and even commit genocide towards them also. He’s the classic example of a tragic character; one whose fall from grace began with good intentions, but led him to a road of darkness and destruction.

The book also talked about how Dooku had aged over those 3 years from their last fight and how much Anakin and Obi-Wan had advanced in both skill and power. I still love Dooku's character though. He was the only one who had the self control to not let himself fall completely to the dark side. He stayed true to what he believed of the corruption of the jedi to the very end. Which he was correct about shortly thereafter.

Either the book is canon or it isn't. For instance In the novel, Depa Bilaba is named as one of the 'Lost Jedi', like Dooku. Filoni retconned that and made her Kanan's master. So which is canon? Btw, I highly recommend the audiobook of ROTS as Jonathon Davies gives a fantastic performance.
@RetneysHolocron Жыл бұрын
Basically, the six original novelizations are considered "loosely" canonical. They are still present in the official timeline of books because they're adaptations of the films. Anything that doesn't offer a contradiction is considered part of canon. I asked Pablo Hidalgo about it and he said this: x.com/pabl0hidalgo/status/1727808210890096825?s=20

In the book, it’s stated that Dooku is so worried about dealing with Anakin, that he realizes he needs to get Obi-Wan out of the way as quickly as he can. So he just throws him away to knock him out. The book also states that Dooku genuinely did not want to kill Obi-Wan, and thought of him as his grandson. So that’s a couple reasons from the book

At the time of the battle Dooku was 83 years old. The Dark Side had taken a huge toll on his body as well as mental fatigue from the war. Anakin was in his prime. His power with The Force had doubled and he increased the strength of his cybernetic arm. As well as mastered his hybrid fighting style (Djem So/Juyo). Plus his anger 😡 fueled his powers. Makashi had one major weakness and that was to Djem So duelists. The fighting style required a lot of power and Makashi duelists never found a way to combat that extra power. Dooku knew this and never found a solution to his fighting weakness. And dueling 🤺 with Anakin threw him in a panic mode. Every blow Anakin delivered against Dooku aged him at least 10 years. Until finally he threw him off balance and severed both his hands.

Anakin didn’t practice Juyo. Juyo was an incomplete form, that’s why Mace created Vaapad. Pretty sure Jedi had to get special permission to practice Form 7. Anakin was a Form 5 specialist (both variants) and he blended Ataru footwork into his style.

He 100% knew of Anakin's growth. You aee this in somw the times they dight each other in the Clone Wars TV show. Palpatine convinced Dooku that he would intervene, if Anakin got the upper hand. This was a lie, Palpatine knew Anakin would win, and counted on him disposing of the no longer required Dooku. Twas all part of the plan.
@paulstockton7121 Жыл бұрын
There was some denial by Dooku too. In the novel before Revenge of the Sith, Anakin chases Dooku and finds Dooku atop some scaffolding about to escape the building. Anakin in his anger and frustration screams at another missed opportunity to capture Dooku. The scream appears to be a force scream and the scaffolding tumbles down just as Dooku looks down gloating. For a moment Dooku is scared, but convinces himself that the scaffolding was old and rickety and only needed a minimal amount of force to collapse.

In response to Dooku not wanting to kill Kenobi in RotS, what about the fact that Dooku was mid-swing into doing exactly this on Geonosis, only to be interrrupted and saved by Anakin? Dooku seemed perfectly content with ending Kenobi here, former padawan of Qui-Gon or otherwise.

The novel states that Dooku was merely toying with both Obi Wan and Anakin for most of the fight. His goal was never to defeat them both, or he could have easily. That was stated in the novel. The goal was to kill Obi Wan which would make Anakin snap and then Sidious was supposed to step in and bring him over to the dark side. So Dooku was tired and done by the time the fight ended....but again, had the goal been to WIN the fight, he could have beaten them both easily, and quickly.
