If you’re a fan of the Dragon Ball franchise, we have no doubt you know its creator is Akira Toriyama, but it may surprise you to know how many other people were involved in making the series the success it is today. His editor, Kazuhiko Torishima, helped make both “Dragon Ball” and “Dr. Slump” successful, even though he rejected the first few things Toriyama sent him and, when Toriyama couldn’t come up with a name for Goku’s signature move, his wife suggested the now iconic kamehameha. We know everyone loves Goku, but we’ll explain why that is and how our favorite Saiyan almost ended up being quite different than we’re used to seeing him.

I think what secretly was behind his drive is motivation to draw what he wanted and what wasn't marketable...he was very anti establishment ...if you look at dragonboy the one shot he drew for shonnen jump before dragonball goku and chi chi are so generic looking I doubt the series gets even 10 chapters after seeing the cover..its so bland but it looked good so it would of been marketable but akira chose to instead give his characters more flaws in their design in the actual series last minute so they didn't look like cartoons...more distinct looks always matter focusing more on their clothes and personality then their hair doe or faces...

goku's innocence and his habit to never backdown were the things that got me hooked to this series. i just cant see dragon ball without goku. since his childhood his happy go lucky nature was one of the things that didnt changed in the future and because of this nature i always wanted to be like goku.....

@@TK-pi7xf No, The "RoF" arc did and then the "Zamasu Saga" did and the "Trunks saga did" but really the "Goku black arc" started the power scaling, because of rosé being Goku Black's version of SS in the anime but is his version of SSB in the manga and because a SS2 trunks power rivaling to SSB and rosé and how he was able to slice a fused god. But other than that yes the "ToP" did start comparing the "ToP" characters to characters from heroes and other characters from other arcs and sagas ect.

I started loving Dragon Ball by watching Universe Survival Saga where Goku encountered the most impressive antagonist - Jiren the Gray who is not also an evil unlike Frieza or Maajin Buu. Jiren is an amazing guy who showed Goku to break his own limits into a divine state beyond the mortal state which divine beings find it difficult for mortals to achieve including Gods of Destruction. Toyotaro is an excellent artist who made illustrations of anime for Dragon Ball Super, my most favourite series overall.

I have always thought of Toriyama as like Stan Lee for Anime, his inspiration to open our minds on things that are out of this world has left us to set our expectations higher. Dragon Ball has created a culture like Star Wars has, while not a Space Adventure, a misadventure of the rising of a hero who finds his identity. We follow Goku when he was just a child, with ambitions to become a great martial artists and eventually finds the answer of who he is and where he comes from. He meets enemies who then become his greatest friends, he is presented with difficult situations and works to get around them, and what I have always been inspired about from Goku is that he always has his chin up at what seems the impossible. It's something to keep in mind as a good mindset keeps us going in life, and better understands problem solving. I hope Dragon Ball stays with us for as long as it can, as it still shows us a great time by introducing interesting characters and fascinating stories that drives a series together.

"episode of bardock" takes place after vegeta blows up, bardock goes back in time and becomes the super saiyan of legend.

My older 5th grade cousin used to let me read his Dragon Ball comics when I was in 2nd grade. It was right during the middle of the first Frieza Saga, just before Goku first became Super Saiyan. This is when DBZ issues were coming out monthly (or maybe weekly?) so, as kids, we were all so excited to see what happens to Goku and the gang on this whole other planet! A few weeks later, my parents and I moved to the States and I never got to find out what happened. A decade later, as a full grown teenager in the States, I found out that DBZ was on television as a cartoon! I was mind blown. I caught up on the series ASAP lol. It's so cool that this series turned out to be the most popular anime of all-time. Who would've thought?

This was great! Would love to see an episode like this on the Gundam series. Although I haven't watched Gundam near as much as the Dragon Ball series I still think the mech suits look awesome. It's just that the political drive of the show and multiple series makes it very difficult to understand where the multiple story arcs fit into the series as a whole.

Honestly for me, it's not only the most popular anime of all time,but the greatest. That's because despite being simplistic, at times it can get quite emotional. It has taught me the lesson to never give up and that you can always surpass your limits. It has inspired me to work out. And I have watched it since I was a little kid, and it's still around today. It gives me comfort knowing DragonBall will always be around

Dragon ball wasn't the first anime I saw, that honor falls to Trigun and cowboy bebop. But, still my favorite, it helped to expand into different shows and got me interested in reading the mangas and what have you. Great doc, keep it up!
