the story goes that Star Trek's Gene Roddenberry offered the role of Captain Kirk to Mr. Lord-but he wanted part ownership in the franchise along with a salary--Roddenberry "balked" at that and instead offered the role to William Shatner-Mr. Lord obviously had the foresight to realize that Star Trek was going to be a future huge success and wanted a "bigger piece of the pie" than just a salary

I watched H5O for 10 of its 12 seasons. I loved it not only for being a police show, but also how it showcased both the good and bad in Hawaii. One vital point you missed about Kam Fong: he was a retired police officer who was called upon many times for advice on police procedures at that time. James McArthur was scheduled to appear in the 2010 reboot of the show, but died before he could be there.

One of the top TV shows of all time. This series is as compelling and enjoyable to watch today as 50 years ago. They were careful not to give him too much exposure because he looked better than Sean Connery. The role of Felix was given to American actors logically. My favorite character on Hawaii Five O was a toss up between Jack Lord and Zulu. I at one time, was a resident of Hawaii and remember watching them film 🎥 one of their episodes on Bishop Street in the financial district. They used First Hawaiian Bank driveup area for the cast for lunch area (it was after banking hours, on a Saturday), I'll never forget that day. Most of the scenes are real, but some are created for the sets too.
@bill20663 жыл бұрын
I might've already commented on this, but grew up walking distance from the Five O studios off the slopes of Diamond Head growing up in Honolulu. The First (second location?) warehouse-studio was rented by the series from the Hawaii Army National Guard of all things (State of Hawaii). The Man who Played the Governor went to my Church when I was a kid (Waiokeola Congregational...right across from Kahala Mall). Zulu and Dano both lived next door to us (Coconut Ave) when me and my family/Parents First Moved to Hawaii in the early 70's....right on the Beach (our "Beach House"). Two episodes filmed at our Next Door Neighbors house, and Later, one Episode of Magnum. Tom Selleck Fell Asleep on our Lawn in between his take on this particular episode being shot...Those were the days...Memories...

I love the fictional character of Steve McGarrett, which doesn't automatically mean that I like everything that Jack Lord did as a person. Lord wasn't exactly enthusiastic about Al Harrington as Ben Kokua neither, who was chosen as a replacement by Leonard Freeman. After Freeman's death, the character of Ben Kokua disappeared rather quickly from the show as well. Which also was the result of Jack Lord's interference. That's why I always separate in my personal evaluation what an actor does as a person and what in his role.

Jack Lord made that show go. Some comments say he was demanding and overbearing, but when you demand the best from people you usually get it, and Lord could command respect from his cast members, and they would deliver the type of performance that made the show great. Without Jack Lord, that show likely would not have made it. I never watched the new sequel series, but I doubt it could match the original.
@thomasjung66602 жыл бұрын
I don't think he command respect, he demanded it. I think this show made his career and net worth. What happen to him after this show ended? People of wealth usually have huge egos, but for a so so actor to act this way, the network probably thought this show would fail without him.

So true! Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?

Jack Lord was definitely my favorite, although I'm a little disappointed that he seemed to be a control freak. I would have to say I really did love Dan-O, James McArthur. My father met once & said that he was very nice. After all his mother was the great Helen Hayes.

He was not a control freak. He had a co-producer role, so was involved in a lot of aspects of the show, but that didn't mean he controlled everything.

My favorite Hawaii 5-0 actor is Al Harrington who played Ben. He took Zulu spot. I took a picture with him when I was a kid at a luau (still have the picture). He had just started on Hawaii 5-0 and is the only surviving cast member. Had a guest appearance on the new Hawaii 5-0. He was the first celebrity I met.
