I ran into Jack Lord at Wards Centre in Waikiki in the late 80’s. He was dressed in all white and wearing a white Panama Hat. He casually spoke to me for several minutes and I kept thinking I know this guy, who is he? Later a remembered seeing a white Lincoln or Cadillac earlier during my visit at Wards Centre and the license plate said “Five O” on it. When I finally connected all the dots I thought “Oh my God, that was Jack Lord… 😳

There will never be another State Police Detective actor like Jack Lord. He was the icon of Hawaii Five0. The Mastermind of solving Crimes and capturing criminals. He was born for that role. It was his vocation and he fulfilled his acting career as Steve McGarrett. He was astonishing in that character role, a natural fit. The rest is Hollywood History and he became an Icon for his tremendous acting abilities, a true professional that found his vocation in life. Priceless accomplishment, genius!

I was an extra on an episode during the final season of Hawaii 5-O and although I was pretty young at the time, like 11 or 12 I distinctly remember the producer having to constantly reminding Jack of his lines. He looked and reacted physically like an old man. I remember being a bit disappointed because I was expecting to see this active, virile guy I'd seen on television as a kid.

I wished that I met Jack Lord when he was alive ! I remember when my family and I had to wait 2 in a half hours aboard a 747 air plane when we along with other passengers had to go to their destination at the Honolulu airport . This was back in the late summer of 1980 . My family and I were going to the Orient for a family trip . During those 2 in a half hours , we could have been shopping at the souvenir store in the airport , and maybe I could have run into Jack Lord and his wife Marie Lord ! Hopefully when I leave this world , I will get the chance to meet Jack Lord and his wife Marie Lord in Heaven . Any way again , thank you for sharing this video with me !

He was my favorite actor on my favorite TV show when I was five. I loved to watch Hawaii Five-0. It is sad that he got alzhiemers disease (a fatal disease which has no cure) that causes progressive dementia and he could not remember his lines and many other important parts, including how to keep it going. Consequently, the most popular TV police series ended when he retired because he was the show that held it all together. Apparently, he died happy in peace and love.

Some actors doing a television series and doing to long just like 10 years or more even 8 years they tend get tired and forgot their lines and going through the motions that why they should do the show 5 years that long enough for a actor doing a weekly series. Jack Lord want to ended the show end of 10th season and CBS went on for another season and Lord plead CBS he want to ended in 11 seasons and CBS want another season. And Jack Lord was definitely tired during season 12. And CBS finally cancelled it. 12 years 284 episodes that is a lot and I imagine that Jack Lord want to do the show 5 years. Like I say doing the show for a long time just like Gunsmoke and was on 20 seasons and James Arness was on the entire run and he was tired and also appears episodes briefly due to his bad legs and they shoot all his scenes in the morning and he then leave. The average seasons of tv shows is 5 years.

It’s understandable, that having been such a dynamic TV presence for 12 years, you’re not anxious to be seen as old or ill. Even during production of the series, where he exercised total control, Jack Lord was known as a private man. Sharon Farrell said that he was showing signs of trouble during the final year. In any case, Lord left behind a positive legacy in Hawaii. In addition to bringing TV production to the state, he and his wife were generous toward many humanitarian causes. He loved his adopted state, and is still spoken of warmly to this day.

I'm a fan of Jack & Hawaii Five-O. From what I've read, Lord was a mixed bag of things. Intense, driven, private, a tough taskmaster, and a difficult gent to work with and disliked by many. He also, according to Five-O producer Perry Lafferty, was responsible for taking charge of the show and keeping it running for years, after the death of the creator-producer of the show early in the series run. Jack & Marie gave a great deal of money to charities. I believe that most people like to ascribe to the people they admire all their virtues, and none of their vices. The truth is we are both.

1985 and I'm stationed at a training command on Ford Island in Hawaii. I'm the FNG so I get tasked to be one of the bodies supplied by my command to support the CINCPAC change of command when Adm. Crowe got relieved by Adm. Hayes and then went on to become Joint Chiefs Chairman. Anyways, my tasking was to stand at a spot on the running track in front of the bleachers and as a guest's limo approached, come to attention and hold my right arm out perpendicular from me to indicate where the limo should stop, then open the passenger door for the guest. Yeah, rough task, I know. Anyways, one of those guests was Mr. Jack Lord himself. I opened the door and out he popped. I thought that was pretty cool.

Early Alzheimer's. i also talked with people who worked on the original series. he was forgetting lines, he'd walk on the set and look lost, not recognizing people he seemed to know the day before, even crew members (like my friend) who had been with the show for a decade seemed to be unfamiliar to him. i can remember when he said "you could tell by the look in his eyes...something was not all right with Jack. Eyes that used to smile at you now seemed distant and unfocused. it was very sad"

Jack Lord was the primary key to Hawaii Five-O's great success. It was one of the most successful TV series in history. He was an excellent actor, executive producer and director of many of the episodes. Lord starred in Hawaii Five-O for its 12 seasons (1968 to 1980) as Detective Steve McGarrett, appointed by the governor to head the State Police criminal investigation department in Honolulu, Hawaii. When series creator Leonard Freeman died in 1974, the show's ownership was shared among Lord, CBS and Freeman's estate, with a contract that made Lord executive producer and gave him complete control over content. He was a hands-on partner who paid attention to minute details, and was known for battles with network executives because he insisted on excellence. Lord suffered from Alzheimer's disease for at least seven years before his death, though some accounts have suggested that he may have had the illness as early as the final season of Hawaii Five-O, in 1979. He died of congestive heart failure at his home in Honolulu, on January 21, 1998, at the age of 77, leaving an estate of $40 million. He was a philanthropist and the entire estate went to Hawaiian charities upon his wife Marie's death at the age of 100 in 2005. He was one of my favorite childhood actors. I loved to watch Hawaii Five-0. Lord was the first actor to play the character Felix Letter in the James Bond film series, introduced in 1962 in the first Bond film, Dr. No. Great actor. Shortly after this episode aired. Jack Lord passed away in January of 1998. Herman Wedemeyer died in 1999. Kam Fong in 2002. I saw the show in syndication during the 1980's and 1990's. I saw Jack in Dr No as James Bond CIA contact, episodes of The FBI, The Fugitive, Ironside before he became Steve McGarrett.

Hawaii-Five-0 (the 1968 version) was the best show ever put together. Jack Lord played a big role in it but not just by his acting, his insistence of hiring locals made the show more realistic. But, I'm not surprised to hear rumors of his ego. Jack Lord was offered the part of Captain Kirk in Star Trek but he demanded ownership of half the show. The producers told him to take a walk. Also, there were other offers Lord had and he made similar demands. His ego must have been gigantic.

having met Gene Roddenberry (part of a college project where we were fortunate to meet this creative genius) i can remember when he talked about the development of star trek and wanting Lord in the Captain's seat. he said he admired Lord's work, but "(he) wasn't THAT good and no one was going to own this show but me/ he must have thought he was Elvis Presley or something" (elvis was known to want ownership of his 'covers' of the songs written by others. he wanted to cover "I will always love you" but Dolly would not give him even partial ownership of her song)

I think one aspect of the show that worked so well, and was new for being highlighted was how the forensics lab would wind up either solving the crime or providing the clinching evidence. Good ol Che Fong and his last minute revelations were gold in a day when tv didn't feature this aspect much.

Interesting that this Video was made in 1997 and he died in 1998. From his wiki page he had Alzheimer's disease the last 8 years in his life and probably more years than that as in his final year of the series, he walked stiffly and was forgetting his lines. There is a story that in the 1980s, James MacArthur visited him at his Beach tent to get him to make a TV Movie based on the series. He left the tent and cried like a baby after he realized that Lord had a serious case of this disease that robs you of your mind through no fault of your own. My dad and Jack knew each other in LA (we lived in Burbank) and I think he might have bought cars from him. Later I visited family in Hawaii and was able to see Jack and his wife Marie. Jack and I became pen pals until he passed away and I never saw a difference in his letters. I was so shocked when he died because he and his wife, a fantastic chef, were very health conscious. My dad stayed in great shape too (he and Jack were the same age) and my dad passed away suddenly a couple of years later. I thought they'd both live to 100! Marie died at 105, so she was definitely doing everything right, but I guess when it is your time to go, you go. Here's to Jack and a fantastic film legacy and to my dad, a man who helped build rockets to the moon - the Greatest Generation.

I'm sure that Marie was trying to protect her husbands privacy as well as his legacy. Jack may not have wanted his personal information out there for the public to know. I choose to remember him as he was, when he was playing Steve McGarrett so brilliantly.

Action television series takes a toll on actors. Big money and limelight, but a lot of hard work. Look at James Garner...his legs were shot by the time he was 50, because of Rockford Files. You can tell a big difference in Telly Savalas in the 80's after Kojak ended as opposed to the 70's. Lee Majors had multiple knee surgeries...surprised he's not worse! So there can be a lot of other wear and tear factors on the body ...not just for Lord, but McArthur too.

There was no mystery. He was very private. He was also suffering from what eventually took him away from us: congestive heart failure. Medication for congestive heart failure is very debilitating. Someone who had been as vigorous as he had been might prefer not to be seen in public.

But if he was suffering from heart failure (and associated dementia) since 1979, he lived very much longer than most people suffering from those conditions.

I heard rumours many many years ago that Jack was a nightmare to work with and was addicted to cocaine. I don't know if any of that was true or not it's just what the word on the street was at that time. What I will say is as a kid growing up I loved watching 5-0 and his catchphrase "book him Danno". I did heard that Jack Lord was very hard to work with and he was so demanding and I see why his co stars left the series. Zulu left in 1972,Al Harrington left in 1972,Kam Fong left in 1978,James MacArthur decided he leaving in 1979 and left the last minute and told the CBS he leaving and Jack Lord didn't was pleased about that and they already had script for season 12 for him and now they had to rewrite the script and had another actor to take the part and they had William Smith to replace MacArthur. I wonder did Jack Lord had some kind of ego or have obsessed with his work and don't want to see his co-workers had little fun and play and just focused on their work on the set.and he must be real strict.

Jack Lord was an absolute perfectionist who stepped into the role on short notice and made it his own. When Leonard Freeman (creator and original EP of the series) prepared the pilot, he cast an actor named Bob Brown as Steve McGarrett. Three days into filming, it was apparent Mr Brown was totally miscast in the role. Freeman made a frantic call to CBS execs in Hollywood, looking for a possible replacement. Jack Lord, then under contract to the network. Only problem? Freeman hated Jack Lord, and the actor felt the same about the producer. With an expensive, on-location pilot hanging in the balance, Freeman flew back to LA at CBS’s urging, to meet with Lord. Somehow they managed to bury the hatchet and Lord was on set in Hawaii just days later. And the rest is TV history. Lord’s perfectionist tendencies became even more pronounced when Freeman died about four years into the series run. Lord became the show’s de facto EP, insisting on the highest level of performance from cast and crew alike. And while Jack Lord could be a real pain in the ass, virtually everyone associated with the show credit Lord with keeping the show together after Freeman’s death and ensuring a long and profitable run
