What's interesting is how the driver fits into the equation. Just because fuel injection and ECUs are better doesn't mean they will always win a race. Chassis tuning, driver ability and weather all play a role in the over all tuning picture as well as individual knowledge of conditions and the race track itself. It's fascinating to see how one single part of a race car can become an entire industry where companies like Haltech spend millions of dollars to push the envelop and further what's possible. Pretty cool. Great video that is easy to understand without being watered down.

It’s great when manufacturers take the time to relate to the wide consumer market. This shows a wealth of commitment matched only by a passion to achieve the best possible end user experience. Thanks again Scott and thank you kindly to Haltech for their dedication!

Scott, thanks for the video...it really condensed the concept of how an ECU vs. a carb works. My only question is: if I'm not obsessed with performance (and not an electrical engineer), and I just want to keep my bike running steadily and reliably, where is a good place to start learning how to interpret engine trouble codes and how to diagnose electrical problems instead of having to go to the dealer every time I get a bad code? Having said that, am I better off sticking with my carbs and throttle cables :D ? Thanks and cheers!!

yep, I think what I'm learning is that any tuning I tried to do would end up with the engine running worse or not at all. I think, ( but I'm not sure) that you MUST do the tuning with the car on a dyno. So, either buy a dyno(kidding) or get access to one. But, then of course it'll be the techs and not you that does the tuning I expect.

Please forgive my ignorant question, but @ 4:58 and there abouts, you draw red wires going INTO the 'out' side of the ECU. I would have expected that the 'out' side would show wires pointing OUTward, figuring that the signals have been corrected, and the 'revised' signalling is then being sent OUT (to the various sensors I guess) to make the necessary adjustments for efficiency. If that's not how it works, well then I guess I sure missed something. I really enjoyed your presentation.

Does the ecu control the AFR, so a tuner can only input a certain AFR while tuning, instead of fine tuning fuel injector timing for a certain manifold pressure and throttle position? For example you just input an AFR of 14.7 at rpm below 3k, and a little rich mixture for higher RPM range, just an example. Thank you so much in advance!

Isn't a cam sensor or something equivalent required? So that the ECU can know which stroke each cylinder is in?
@haltech7 жыл бұрын
Yes, we’ve simplified things greatly in this video and an engine position sensor is what we refer to as the ‘RPM’ input in this video.
@glenn9k7 жыл бұрын
Ah, I see. Are your ECUs capable of controlling an engine without a position sensor? I work a lot with Saab's, and their Trionic ECU determines the engine position by measuring an ionization current in the combustion chamber/spark plug gap. If I were to install a haltech ECU on such an engine, would I have to change the coils and install a position sensor, or could I use the advanced Saab Digital Ignition cassette/coil pack?
@haltech7 жыл бұрын
All Haltech ECU’s require some form of engine position input to determine correct injector and ignition timing. The proprietary Saab system would most definitely not be supported.

@romancarp64277 жыл бұрын
thanks for the video
@incolink7 жыл бұрын
way to general...with your question if I am correct to assume r34 gtr you can tune and optimize modest bolt ons with an ecu hack like nistune or a piggyback like power fc ...if you want to go a bit more hardcore like doubling the power output a haltech plug in is worth consudering this will give you a few good upgrade functions like luanch control flex fuel.rain mode now control anti lag...
@Moriquendiii7 жыл бұрын
That depends entirely on what car you have, but you are going to need a chip or modify the original ECU at the least. If it is a nissan you should check out Nistune, and you can probably find something similar for other car makes. If you want full control of your ECU you should get a proper standalone tho, thats why i bought my Elite 1500.

@abbeyomisol5 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for this video. It is very informative. However, one question though. Is the ECU mainly focuses on the FI process and is it standard for all bikes? I am planning to customize the dashboard of my motorcycle (Yamaha NVX 155). I wish to create a custom-made display screen, which I will replace the existing digital dashboard display. I wish to make the new display screen more intelligent and has many more added function such as GPS-direction app. Is doing this does not require alteration or change in the ECU? My goal is to make my dashboard (digital display) a bit smart and does not only dispaly, RPM, Speed, Time, Trip and Odometer as what the original display does. Can you please shed me light on this, I don't wanna mess with the ECU, is it possible to make this project with the said restriction?

So it's just another tuning method? Like boost tuning and load tuning?
@incolink7 жыл бұрын
it becomes the main load axis it creates a number from inlet manifold pressure and exhaust manifold pressure ( i think) it looks to express the pressure differential across the head of the engine and that helps determine the mass of air that the engine is using .. and therefore the fuel it requires.
