One of the only cartoons that never tried to push having a group of girls unnecessarily attached to the main character(s) to the point of sexual assault was "funny" or "cute", like Chowder. Not that panini sexually assaulted him or anything, but he repeatedly screamed at the top of his lungs that he didn't like her and he's not her boyfriend. Yet everyone around him was like "awww look at the young couple." Despite Chowder being visibly uncomfortable. Like he was shown a future where she went crazy just because she couldn't have his kids. I really wish Gravity Falls got to be longer but Disney's fickle nature with airing new episodes with months-wide gaps between them and dragging their feet on saying whether they'd renew it made the crew have to expedite the conclusion to the story. The last half of season 2 seems insanely rushed in terms of plot and how quickly they wrap up, and I don't fault the creatives for it. I'm certain that Stan losing his memories was originally going to last at least a full episode if given a third season to really expand on the preparation and fight with Bill, but the episode wraps it up in a minute or two to the point where it feels cheap. But at least they got to tell their full story and more is still trickling out in books. Hopefully it'll come back with a movie someday. The team obviously put a lot of thought and care into the show and they wouldn't do it wrong.

Ed, Edd n' Eddy ran for most the first seasons during Summer Vacations, but then had the season that took them back to school, with a hilarious episode where Eddy tried his darnest to simulate summer for longer only for a Fall Rainstorm reveal his scheme, that was also when the show renewed their animation methods, so we got crisp colours, smooth linework and a more diverse palette with characters dressing for colder weather and such. So anyone who is binge-watching the show can easily cut to the movie before their school season starts since said movie is during summer.

However, the Ed Edd n Eddy movie knew its setting its premise and beautifilly pushed it in a way to make it grander without loosing itself. Also id also argue the We Bare Bears movie would fit in the "less out there" category as well as it doesnt do anything so out of pocket that coildnt work inside the show and is mostly anout a personal issue rather than saving the world.

There's no ancient prophecy, no Aztec gods, not even the fate of the town being at stake (ala the simpsons movie) just the threat of the restaurant closing down if they can't make rent, Louise wanting to prove she isn't a baby, and unraveling a murder. It's just a jumbo episode of the show with slightly elevated stakes. An argument could also be made for the south park movie, depending on if you want to call it a slice of life show or not. World ending stakes are par for the course, but for the majority of the movie the central conflict is just saving Terrance and Phillip and the families needing better communication, but it does fit in perfectly as an expansion of the series and stands on its own as a film.

I think the reason he didn't mention that is because while it is kind of a slice of life show, it also features sci-fi elements outside of the movies. Same with South Park, as while its movie carries the same tone as the show, that series has supernatural elements and religious figures as reoccuring characters.

I think the reason the first SpongeBob movie isn't as criticized for it is because the original show was _already_ a wacky surreal show, so the movies being epic and bombastic feels natural.

This film was absolutely written by people who understood what the fans wanted. Aside from the swamp fight and Eddy's brother, it also features characters like Kevin and Sarah, people who fans had been dying to see get their comeuppance, finally humbled. Sarah in particular is really thoroughly humiliated by being given a wet willy by the Kankers and forced to be their pack mule. It's as if the writers were speaking directly to the audience with that one.

What's also interesting and kind of poetic about Big Picture Show is that when it finally aired in america, it was at the tail end of a generation. This was during the time what CN Real was trying to be a thing and when the network was also trying to throw everything it can at once (re-airing Johnny Test after its run on Kids WB, it's failed preschool block Tickle U, giving The Land Before Time a TV series and re-airing Goosebumps and treating it as if it's a new show. To be fair, the latter was the best out of all of them because it introduced me and a new generation of children in the 2000s to a great 90s classic. At the time, I never knew that Goosebumps had a TV show (though I do remember glimpsing a DVD at a video store and dismissing it before it aired on Cartoon Network), and I was fucking obsessed with the show and it made me a Goosebumps fanboy to this very day. I was at the books target age group, but I didn't read them because I was more used to picture books or something like Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark which had pictures and short stories, so I was always disappointed that I had to do more reading despite having awesome covers). But Ed, Edd, N' Eddy's Big Picture Show, the finale of one of Cartoon Network's most popular and classic shows, came out in 2009 and even re-aired during the "Best of '09" marathon on New Year's Eve, and at the end of that marathon we got a teaser for a new little cartoon called Adventure Time. A show which was not only the beginning of the network's renaissance, but TV animation as a whole. It kind of makes me shed a tear at how poetic its airing was and we never knew what was coming next at the time.

Gotta love seeing more people talking about how perfect Big Picture Show is. Honestly I'd say EEnE is one of the few, maybe only, cartoons made that never overstayed its welcome, wasn't cut off way too soon, or had a glaring dip in quality in its entire run. It knew exactly when to end, with a fairly consistent quality throughout, ending with one absolutely satisfying conclusion. Also, in *slight* defense of the Proud Family movie, that show already had its fair share of pretty absurd and out there concepts. Al Roker being a malicious wish-granting deity, Suga Mama's sister being a literal witch, sentient talking credit cards, just to name a few. Granted, megalomaniacal peanut people seeking world domination is a pretty massive leap, but let's not pretend the show didn't get pretty weird too before that movie.

And now you see why the Ed bois movie deserves a textbook definition on how to end a show without leaving on a big cliffhanger like Arnold did until "The Jungle Movie" after years of fan outcry and resolved the cliffhanger "The Journal" left off. It answered and wrapped up almost all of the questions and arcs of the characters, there's strong character development and the neighbourhood kids finally accepted the Eds as their true friends after seeing the source of Eddy's asshole behaviour. And yes, even Ed's baby sister Sarah. It's such a satisfying and worthy conclusion to not only Cartoon Network and Danny Antonucci's masterpiece after a decade, but also the Cartoon Cartoons as well. As for Storiaverse...well...I am trying to look for an upload function, but I have to sign up in order to join the Storiaverse creator network. Oh well...

For me, though, the Ed, Edd n Eddy movie is an example of "series finale" more so than feature film (especially since, unlike many of the other examples here, it didn't go to theaters). But I'm kind of gonna play devil's advocate here and say that "going bigger" is kind of what makes these movies fun? Because they throw the characters in situations they wouldn't normally be. At least in the case of stuff like the Recess movie, it adds to the appeal. Like if you're "not big enough" for want of a better term, the film then can fall into the "well why not just make it into an episode of the show?" category. Especially, again, if it's theatrical.
@wootmasterzorsx8 ай бұрын
Ed, Edd n Eddy always managed to do a lot of things right above what other shows try to do. The characters are loud, most everyone is a jerk, episodes usually end on a downer note… and yet, it somehow all holds up. And the movie is an excellent example, that is a satisfying conclusion for everyone… except Johnny, but hey. The movie sidelined him and did not give him a good ending, but it gets a 98 on the test, so that’s still good. And side note, while I haven’t watched the movie, I’ve read stuff about it and I can safely say, at the very least- We Bare Bears as a show always had some wild moments, so at least it couldn’t fall victim to raising the stakes unbelievably. Not that that movie would be perfect, obviously, with all the issues brought up in this video for slice of life movies. As I understand, it does have the recurring characters get sidelined and probably isn’t a good standalone experience for the show. It has some problems that would net it a high B, low A, from everything I know of it. But hey, they didn’t go crazier than the show would usually go, when it wanted to. Which is more than can be said for a number of these series.

I think what makes the Ed, Edd and eddy standout is the animation. It's incredibility cartoony and over the top that it doesn't need action or the super natural elements to up the sakes. There are moments where the animation is just as good if not better than Ren and Stimpy, which is something I don't say lightly.

"He didn't want to make a Family Guy movie" Well, there was a Family Guy movie, the direct-to-DVD "Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story". The three parts will later air as part of the show itself at the end of the 4th season under the names "Stewie B. Goode", "Bingo Was His Name, Oh!" and "Stu and Stewie's Excellent Adventure". If you're referring to a theatrical Family Guy movie, well I can still see why Seth doesn't want to do a theatrical movie with the Griffins.

Ed, Edd & Eddy just might be one of the greatest cartoon shows ever made and the Big Picture Show perfectly demonstrated it. It's got great cast, great story & writing, great animation, an perfectly blend of comedic, drama, action, adventure & moral, some of the funniest slapstick I've seen in any shows and an tie in storyline that fits the entire show well. I don't think I've seen any cartoons do something like EE&E does and it shows just how much cared and potential the show has. Not even something like Animaniacs, Freakazoids, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Gravity Fall or Ducktales 2017; for as great as those shows are, doesn't even hit me as hard as Ed, Edd & Eddy were. I think EE&E is an perfect cartoon; classic or modern, that any shows should take note on how you do this kind of finale.
@troin39256 ай бұрын
Speaking of movies unnecessarily raising the stakes, if a Smiling Friends movie were to ever be made, my idea for one would be to have the plot having such high stakes be part of the joke. It just starts off like a normal work day for Charlie and Pim but as the movie progresses, the stakes get so ridiculously high that the entire multiverse ends up being at stake, and they both react realistically to everything that's happening. While Pim tries to be invested, Charlie wants nothing to do with it and just wants to leave (it's not even part of a character arc for him either, he just acts like any normal person would in this situation). Maybe later on when Mr. Boss has to save all four of his employees, he just comedically becomes a badass action hero like Neo. And after seeing your Ralph Bakshi video, maybe the way the villain gets defeated is like in Wizards where they get killed in a hilariously quick and easy way that comes out of nowhere. I'm kind of inspired by Beavis and Butthead Do America, except if the main characters weren't idiots detached from reality, but acted like normal, realistic people (like in the actual show).
