I’m actually surprised Hoarah Loux’s theme is rarely mentioned. Always one of the most hype moments of the game to me
@loopine3 ай бұрын
Yea I like the choirs in that one
@kingdave79963 ай бұрын
It’s surprising to me too considering that it is probably one of the closest to the pure sound and hype most souls games have. It’s definitely better than some of the stuff DS3 pulls, but it’s not like it’s the typically softer music of Elden Ring too. I think the unfortunate truth is that a lot of these players just have an under appreciation for the deeper parts of music. I love being bombarded by epic sounds in most of DS3’s tracks, but if I were to continuously listen to the whole thing I’d probably need to get my hearing checked. It is often better to bring it down at points and this adds to the despair that is in these games. If you look at Darkeater Midir’s theme for example, it’s very well composed, but is just pure epic hype. We don’t get the feeling that this is a beast who has lived for ages through pain and suffering caused by the nature of the Soulsborne genre. That’s why I love Gwyn’s theme and the Soul of Cinder’s theme. We get this slow composition that shows the true despair of the situation. Looking at Hoarah Loux’s theme and more specifically Godfrey’s theme altogether, we get a nice regal tone in the first half that is slower and fit for a king, but then is devolves into the rapid warrior nature of Hoarah Loux while still not just being a bombardment of sound. My favorite piece of music of all time is hands down New World Symphony. It is exciting, horrifying, sad, and calm all within 12 minutes. We get the blasting of brass as if something horrible has happened and then transition to the melody of flutes and strings not two minutes later. Oh and the French Horns the Horns! The best time I have ever seen this song used was in One Piece when Luffy defeats Crocodile, something I hope they repeat in the Live action instead of putting on of the generic Luffy battle songs. New World Symphony is probably one of the best examples of how you can have an intense exciting song that just isn’t music and noise blasting at you to give you a sense of epicness without any proper distinction.

Hot damn, I knew a video you’ve been cooking for the past year would be good, but man, you really killed it with this. Funnily enough, this video made me realize why I enjoyed listening to DS3’s soundtrack so much. I always felt like Elden Ring’s soundtrack didn’t have the same intensity that DS3 did. Turns out I’m just a sick fuck who likes listening to loud music at full blast volume with headphones on. Even if the production value is considerably lower in DS3, the “beat” of some of those songs hit just right that you feel the intensity and anguish of it all. I think this was the point Koop was trying to communicate when he said Elden Ring’s wasn’t iconic. I’m not at all educated in music so I can only describe it in vague, nebulas terms, but DS3 has got such raw emotional power that the poorer production doesn’t bother me. Not all the songs are bops, mind you. I was incredibly surprised and disappointed at Nameless King’s theme, especially. Elden Ring has more distinct tracks, with a lot more flavor and variety, as well as better “production quality” and “mixing.” (Whatever the hell those words mean idk) Which does ultimately make it the better soundtrack. Though I will say, I think most of elden rings ambient tracks are just unnecessary, I find the music in areas like Liurnia, Limgrave, and Altus to be too repetitive and distracting. Especially when there’s just no escaping it’s presence. I much prefer the silence in Dark Souls to the constant overbearing presence of music in elden ring. Wasn’t expecting to come out on the side of dark souls as much as I did, considering I have ten times the amount of hours in elden ring than all Dark Souls games combined. So as it turns out, in your attempt to convince people of elden rings superiority, you made me appreciate Dark Souls more 👍 (still love elden rings soundtrack though)

Godspeed and Swans are great but I'd disagree that Godspeed's discography is full of "bangers" since they returned in 2012. There's a reason why most diehard GY!BE fans these days primarily listen to live bootlegs from 2000-2003 because that was the band at their peak and they'll never return to that level again. I think when Swans and GY!BE returned in the 2010's post-rock fans were so excited about having them back that they in turn extremely overrated their new material. Not to say that they were terrible albums by any measure, but just that they lacked the creativity and ambition that permeated their earlier material (especially in GY!BE's case).

Since you're into Black Metal, you know how texturing and ambient elevates the harmonic work. Their album Dynamo has some strong Shoegaze vibes, with their song En Remolinos being a pure Masterpiece. For me the Bloodborne OST will always be the best, solely because it was actually recorded live on location (that location being a church) as opposed to spliced together in a studio. You can genuinely hear the difference in how natural the voices sound, and I have died on that hill many times fighting DS3/2 fans. Funnily enough, the ER intro/Radagon theme is by far my least favorite in ER, because it specifically sounds like the worst parts of DS3 (lookin at you, Yhorm), only competently mixed. DS3’s intro at least had some more things going on melodically, and some genuine crescendo and decrescendo across it. ER’s just makes me feel screamed at - I skip to character select to get away from it as fast as possible. Finally, because I too am pretentious; my faves: - Ebrietas, Daughter of the Cosmos (fucking GOATED underrated theme, I have the BB ost on vinyl and this shit gives me chills, probably my favorite boss theme in all of Soulsborne to this point) - Oceiros, the Consumed King - Malenia, Blade of Miquella - Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower - The Night Unfurls (also chills) - Rom, the Vacuous Spider (I have used this theme for tabletop gaming ambiance for all flavors of psychic villains from Illithid to Sith, even ) - Twin Princes (I will die on the hill that they’re the best boss in DS3, and I will also die on the hill that they have the second best OST in DS3, and that the only way either could really be improved is by making them longer) - Soul of Cinder (I’m on of the exactly 7 freaks who prefer the first half of the song) - Father Gascoigne - Pontiff Sulyvahn - Champion’s Gravetender - Twin Demons - Darkeater Midir

Great video as usual, I welcome this discussion of music. Elden Ring doesn't have 68 tracks--it's over 100 because each ambient track has combat, night, and night combat variations that the official soundtrack neglects to include, as well as the 3 colosseum tracks, the two nomadic merchant tracks, the Leyndell Flute player, and other more obscure ones. Unfortunately the channel that had the ambient variations uploaded got taken down after the DLC story trailer dropped. Radahn phase 2 is one of my favorite parts of this game's soundtrack so I'm surprised you rated that low, although I don't think you really get to hear that part ingame unfortunately. Also in that segment I think you called Fire Giant a "shardbearer" boss--to be the huge pedant I am, those are specifically the ones which give you a great rune on defeat (Rennala + the six demigods), whereas "Remembrance Boss" is the category that includes bosses like Fire Giant and Maliketh too.

This, right here, makes most gaming videos look shallow in comparison. Going through so much details about production, texturing and a bit of music theory just makes it strongly structured. Too many boss tracks in Souls try to underline adversity rather than say much about the bosses. There's plenty of instances where I feel a boss theme could fit so many other bosses because they hit the same tonality, epic, cold and aggressive. I feel like the Elden Ring DLC story trailer is a great example of what the tone usually is VS what I'd wish to hear more often. You have what I assume to be Messmer's theme, pretty competent but typical boss theme, sounding grand and dramatic followed by what I assume to be Miquella's theme, bearing many of the same hallmark but drastically change the tone to sound far more hopeful than we usually hear, more uplifting.

it s crazy to me people think that ER ost is bad, there s a million black metal albums that do the disharmony gimmick of the souls games better, bar a few legendary tracks, but there s few pieces of music that can evoke feelings(or maybe adrenaline) out of me like morgotts or malikeths theme for example
@fuzzywuzzy8433 ай бұрын
Demon’s Souls is my favorite souls soundtrack because of how over the top the orchestral songs are and how strange and idiosyncratic other tracks are. I will never forget hearing maidan astrea theme for the first time! Though my all time favorite video game soundtrack is Evergrace, a ps2 release day game (one of three fromsoft put out that day). It’s a hypnotic mix of jrpg electronics with Native American music samples that perfectly works in combination to the strange world they created for that game

Gotta know if you heard the minute of the dancing lion boss from the DLC gameplay, because it is very different from the base games IMO.

I think elden rings soundtrack is very iconic, and the DLC has furthered my belief in that. The fact that inside some of the boss themes we can recognise “oh, thats malenias theme” or “oh, thats rennalas theme” is like objective truth to me. The biggest one that caught me off guard was how people heard Radagons theme in Messmers theme lol

I thought this was just about elden ring but actually 1 hours and everything else about your music taste. Very well made video. I also used elden ring soundtrack in my videos as well because they are easily to listen to and not too loud. It feel good putting on some gameplay and random location like tunnel, haligtree, stormveil or eternal city. But I also like sekiro soundtrack a lots. Probably because of bias toward more traditional instrument. Sekiro really hit me

A based In Rainbows/Justice CROSS/ American Football/My Dead Girlfriend enjoyer. Respect. Go check out Number Girl and Supercar--those are my classic j-rock recommendations, if you've somehow missed them. For newer acts, I think Tempalay is making pretty fresh psychadelic stuff. Can't go 5 minutes without mentioning TOE or Tricot (was lucky enough to check out the later live on one of their first international tours.) Oh, also, listen to Total by SebastiAn if you haven't already. Thanks for making this video--I was just reflecting on From Software OSTs recently, and was surprised that Elden Ring really did beat out some of my favorite game OSTs, so I appreciate the added perspective.

I love the Elden Ring OST and you made a great video showcasing that. What's even more incredible is that I find that the DLC went so far and beyond in therm of quality. I felt that they even fix most of the issues that were raised in your video by other creators like the uniqueness and lack of distinction between tracks. My "jaw dropping to the floor" moment was Midra Lord of Frenzied Flame. This track was for me their masterpiece. It starts with those choirs that almost feel distorted and alien, then the cords play this hunting melody reminding us of the merchant and their theme. The energy then swells slowly into madness, overwhelming you to the point of commanding transcendental authority. It matches so well with the visual extravagance of this encounter. He crashes in a fiery explosion going into the second phase, the music doest a perfect switch with some very deep orchestrations and something that sounds like an alarm growing. It gives such a feeling of urgency and panic to that fight. Divine Beast Dancing Lion also is a contender for their best work in that department. I would be very curious to know your thoughts on the DLC music. Peace

I think that the quality of Elden Ring’s soundtrack was done dirty by God of War Ragnarok sucking up all the music awards. I think the idea that the DS3 soundtrack is just generic orchestral slop is _slightly_ unfair but goddamn Elden Ring’s music is so good.

I don’t know how anyone would ever think Elden ring has better music than Bloodborne or dark souls 3 in any way under the sun
@Al-ji4gd3 ай бұрын
It's more varied, it has better production, it uses a live orchestra, the compositions are more interesting. Those are a few reasons.
@wojciechciagaa77233 ай бұрын
@@Al-ji4gdthat applies to Bloodborne and Sekiro as well. I'm noticing a pattern here, Fromsoft games that don't have "Souls" in the name are better than the ones that are.
@Al-ji4gd3 ай бұрын
@@wojciechciagaa7723 I haven't played much Sekiro, so I can't judge it. It seems quite different from the other soundtracks, though, less bombastic, but maybe that's a good thing. Again, I quit Sekiro after a couple of hours and never picked it up again so I'm in no position to say much about it. Kitamura is the main (only?) composer, though, and I'm not a big fans of hers, so I might not even like the music. I agree about Bloodborne, though.
@wojciechciagaa77233 ай бұрын
@@Al-ji4gd yes, Kitamura composed all of it aside from one track by the composer from Tenchu. I didn't like Kitamura's DS3 tracks, but Sekiro OST sounds very distinct. Senpou Temple, Corrupted Monk and Divine Dragon are my favourites, try listening to these if you want Good Sekiro Stuff
