By now, you’re more than likely all too familiar with what it feels like to get shocked by an electric fence. But what is really happening to deliver the shock?
In this video from Zareba®, North America’s largest producer of electric fencing supplies, we'll show you the flow of electric current on the fence to see how the process works.
DELIVERY OF ELECTRICITY
Starting at the fence charger, electric current is fed into your system by either an AC power outlet or battery on your DC or solar charger. This current is then built up through a series of transformers inside your fence charger which takes that electricity and converts it into a higher voltage charge.
This higher voltage charge is what is released to your fence lines from your charger’s fence terminal post and wire connection.
-Electric Fence Charger Options from Zareba®: www.zarebasystems.com/store/el...
TWO TERMINALS ON THE CHARGER
Fence chargers are designed with two external terminals to intentionally create separation in the electric circuit. Electricity enters the fence circuit on the “hot” fence terminal, and completes the circuit when it’s collected by the ground rods and sent up to the ground terminal from your connecting ground wire.
This ground terminal on your charger is just as important in delivering an effective shock to your animal as having a strong output voltage on your fence charger. A fence’s shocking power is only as strong as its grounding system is able to receive. A smaller grounding setup will receive less electric current, and emit less shock on the line.
 Grounding System Options from Zareba®: www.zarebasystems.com/store/el...
COMPLETING THE CIRCUIT
The main objective a charge has coming out of a fence charger on the fence line terminal is to find the shortest connecting path to that ground terminal to complete the circuit. The objective, then, of an electric fence system is to only allow one successful point of circuit completion for that current, and that successful point of completion happens when an object touches the “hot” wire and the earth at the same time.
This could be your animal, a branch shorting out the wire, or you may have been the lucky one to complete this circuit once or twice. This is also why birds don’t get shocked on fence lines … they don’t have a contact point with both earth and the wire.
-Electric Fence Tester Options from Zareba®: www.zarebasystems.com/store/el...
WHY INSULATORS ARE USED
To keep this electric current cleanly running, fence systems utilize insulators to attach wires to posts - insulated wire to make underground connections - And weeds and grass kept off the line, all to keep the electric current from running to the ground.
So, that instantaneous shock felt by the animal touching a fence line is the result of the electric current being passed through its body to the earth. And depending on your soil conditions, (higher moisture levels being more conductive and number of ground rods), the earth can carry this circuit over hundreds of feet to be received by your grounding rods and sent up to your ground terminal.
-Electric Fence Insulator Options from Zareba®: www.zarebasystems.com/store/el...
SUCCESSFUL ANIMAL CONTAINMENT WITH ELECTRIC FENCING
The basic principle of electric currents is what electric fencing utilizes to provide the psychological barrier for animal containment. The charge has successfully completed its trip out of the fence terminal, down the wire, through your body, down to the earth, received by the grounding rods, and back up into the ground terminal.
Electric fencing is one of the safest forms of fencing for both you and your animals. Look for a 3rd party approved safety label from UL or CSA on your charger to ensure all safety evaluations have been completed. The shock from an electric fence charger is extremely low amperage for 3/10,000 of a second, once a second, so it’s an immediate, unpleasant psychological deterrent.

I farmed in younger days. One solution for problem animals is to have a ground wire between hot wires. Also heavy wire under tension transfers the shock better than the usual light wire used on hobby farms. A proper fence will stop polar bears.

I got one of your fence chargers from Tractor Supply under the American FarmWorks brand. Anyhow, I have a bear coming into our apiary trashing beehives. I read all the instructions before I purchased the device and noticed you had to set this solar charger in the sun for 3 days to charge it up. I can't gamble on the 3 days, so I called your help desk. The gal said I could trickle charge the device for the initial usage to expedite the charging and to get the device into action before the bear wrecks the entire place, however, she could not tell me how to actually charge the device. My question is, do I need to take the housing off to expose the battery and hook the trickle charger directly to the terminals on the battery, or can I just hook it up to the positive and negative on the device itself? Some decent instructions with this method of charging would be much appreciated by all of your customers that need to get the device into action asap! Thank you!

I doubt there is a series of transformers in the "fence charger". More than likely, there is a high frequency switching power supply that drives one smaller transformer at a higher efficiency and a cockroft Walton multiplier on the output.

My guess was something to make 12 volts (say), then an ignition coil to make the thousands of volts, and some kind of gadget to make it pulse, some kind of blinker module. I never have opened one up. If you're making thousands of units to sell, I guess you could design and build a special transformer to do whatever you want. ?? This doesn't account for battery operation. Ah.. maybe the flasher thing... HM. When it closes it powers the ignition coil very briefly, and also say heats up something, makes the switch open. So you'd get just one pulse every so often. Here in The FUTURE you could make some electronic thing and do whatever you want I guess, a timer and an inverter, let out five pulses every six seconds except for Sundays and Christmas?
@WACKO1123
@WACKO1123 6 жыл бұрын
You answered your own question. An automotive coil boosts 12 v DC to 25K v pulse by the distributor. So no need to use more than one transformer. One transformer from input voltage multiplied up to 2K volts for the fence. The pulse is developed by a simple timer circuit to pulse the output.

Some aren't. Sometimes people will run ground connected wires in between the hot wires to deliver a much stronger shock if an animals touches those two wires at once. Some also just don't make all the wires hot to give the impression of protection without spreading too much electricity through too many wires and weakening the shock.

how can a human get shock when he wearing a rubber shoe most of the time
@sanjeen2503
@sanjeen2503 6 жыл бұрын
The design might be different, for example there will be both phase and neutral lines running parallel, and touching both constitutes a shock. Either this, or that there is only single phase line with high voltage as shown in the video, and touching ONLY that without touching ground still gives a shock since the human body has stray capacitance that allows current to flow.
@radon360
@radon360 6 жыл бұрын
A typical fence runs pulses of several thousand volts. You need a lot of insulation to keep that from not arcing across small gaps and even out the side of your shoe to the ground. It's very low current and very short pulses, thus it creates pain but not electrocution.
@SilverScaleMA
@SilverScaleMA 6 жыл бұрын
Depends on the charger, often if the fence is designed to use the braided wire or tape fencing than the connection takes place all in the line itself. It is not as strong of a shock as the solid wire electric fences though. I shocked myself plenty of times on the wire I had running around the top of my fence to keep the neighbors dog away from my goats. I always had thick soled boots on but it never mattered, unless I managed to time my touching the fence in between pulses I always got a bit of a shock.
@rrc6965
@rrc6965 3 жыл бұрын
Well you will get shocked but you will be able to pull your hand away from the wire (if you were to get shocked because touched the wire) but if you have no shoes on and standing on the ground with your bare feet you won't be able to pull your hand away from the wire unless it's weak electricity, someone brave enough to pull you away or there is some safety kill switch ( like house electricity for example)

@Ryan-qn1wr
@Ryan-qn1wr 5 ай бұрын
This video didn't explain it, but I heard that electric fences output charge in very short pulses, rather than DC or AC at 60hz. I guess it would be ac due to the transformers, but Im not sure it makes much of a difference if you do AC in short pulses, or DC just switched on and off for a short duration. It's one of the main reasons why electric fences don't kill you when you touch them. Most people think it's low amps, but I don't think there are going to be low amps the way some fences are designed(ones with ground wires in between hot wires).

If bird's don't get shocked by standing on the electric wire, explane to me how last week, I saw a bunch of bird's set off a HUGE power surge electrical EXPLOSION on a neighborhood power pole - that had lightning bolts illuminate the entire upper half of the pole, with LOUD electrocution buzzing sounds? Just like the videos showing a powerful electrical short. During this electric light show, the many bird's flew off during this electrical event, but the electric wires didn't explosively separate from the pole connections. This happed during the daylight hour's.

Why do you thinks the birds did it? Maybe a bird got into a bad position and shorted something, although I think the rain would have done that first.
@rickprusak9326
@rickprusak9326 11 ай бұрын
@josephpostma1787 It didn't rain that day. I was parked waiting for a traffic signal to change to green. I just happened to look over to my left, looking at a bird sitting on the wire, when all electrical hell broke loose. The bird vaporized leaving a huge electric lighting bolt in it's place. Just a few feathers floating in the air where the bird used to be. The LOUD boom 💥 scared the s**t out of me. I was ready to floor the car 🚗 to get out of there in case some electrical wires were going to come down on my vehicle. What a light show afterwards.

If they touched a hot wire and a neutral wire then current will flow. If there was a transformer on the pole, the birds likely made contact with its outputs. You have to have a potential difference.

Electric fencing works using the ground to complete the circuit. The power poles from the utility have both the hot and neutral wires in them. Meaning that touching the wires together completes the circuit. Or touching both wires with your body or bird body completes the circuit. Does that make sense? Someone correct me if I am wrong.
