Thanks for this great video on this topic, as I never came across electric trailer-brakes in Germany. I wonder, whether one can upgrade an unbraked trailer (total mass up to 750kg) with an electric "aftermarket kit" to a 1 ton ( or something like that), ideally with a ( lever)-hand-brake ( or alternatively electric parking brake as long as there is no permanent 12 DC source necassary ( like a bistable relay). I thought I pretty much knew about trailer brakes but I did learn some things I did not know. Good video. What you didn't explain was how to adjust the "delay". I have never heard of that feature. Perhaps you could do another video to explain that. I think the "gain" for the magnet comes from the controller on the tow vehicle but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks again for a good video.
@ghostses9 жыл бұрын
+Scotty Brunton Thanks Scotty! No, I sure didn't explain how to adjust the delay. You are correct, the gain comes from the controller- as does the delay. There are two types of controllers, time delay and proportional. Mine is a time delay unit but want to change over to proportional. I'll try to shoot a clip as I have time and explain things in greater detail. I may even purchase a proportional controller so I can show them side by side to explain the differences of each type. Take care, G.

So, lemme start off by saying I am very familiar with electric brakes in a whole but MAN! I can tell, you've been in the instructing industry for quite some time! I mean that in all the complimentary ways!!! The way you kept it very informative yet not "dumbed down" and THAT, sir, is an art!!! I absolutely believe that this is the absolute best way to produce an instructional, or even a refresher, video! You actually got me for a second when you spoke of the polarity. I immediately thought "because it's dc voltage" but as quickly as it entered my craw, you nailed me with the fact that dc IS used polarity specific to run motors in a definite direction. So, I ask... Since electric motors are basically a set of or a series of N/S poled magnets motivated by dc voltage, then how does this magnet only utilize one pole? I mean its all alone. Am I missing something or does it simply have to do with the fact that the drum is the actual negative for that magnet to fix itself to? That's the one part of electric trailer brakes that's stumped me. I mean, why let go once the power is removed? What is it about applying 12 volts that turns that particular part into a magnet? My apologies for being so wordy😕 Never worldly....✝ss

Thanks Paul. Without getting too off in the weeds, a dc motor uses permanent magnets and they do have N and S poles like you've stated. They do spin in different directions depending on polarity. However, the magnets on the brakes are electromagnets. It's basically a coil of wire wound around a core. When voltage is applied, they become magnetic. Polarity doesn't matter in this case. Solenoids work on the same principle as the brakes. They too do not care about polarity. Hope this helps, and do some digging around. Take care, G.

@@ghostses Very well explained and the relationship you made to a solenoid makes perfect sense! Thank you, Sir!!!

Who knew that something so intentionally simple, could be so convoluted. If I could understand this, you are a brilliant instructor. Thank you. Side note, why would you delay the application of trailer brakes? Wouldn’t that just be more prone to jackknifing? If anything, having the trailer apply just a tick faster than the tractor would be better, if simultaneous isn’t possible.

Glad you found it informative. I could be wrong, but I believe the delay is so you don't yank the tow vehicle before it's brakes start slowing it down. It is kind of balanced with the delay because one is hydraulic and the other electric. They apply at different rates. A proportional brake controller has an accelerometer that senses the vehicle slowing and acts accordingly to apply the brakes. They are superior to the type I have and will get one if mine ever goes out. Hope this helps in some way, Take care, G.

Thanks for the insight. Explaining how it works helps so if I run into problems in the future, I have a better idea of what may be causing it. Thank you!!!

Should the magnet lever be easy to engage? I think mine are seized. This helped a lot, thanks!

There is tension due to the springs, but it shouldn't take a ton of force to move it. You might try using the grease on the pivot points to see if that helps. G.

I was unsure if it mattered which wire on the brakes was positive and which one was negative. This video really cleared it up for me. I have built trailers but never used axles with brakes. Bought a pair of axles to build a tilt car trailer with and needed some clarity. Thank you

That's cool Keith! As you found out, it doesn't matter. You just want to make sure they're wired in parallel and not in series. Good luck with your build. You should video the process and post it. I'm sure it would get tons of traffic. Take care, G.
