It frustrates me how people wants to talk about depression until it gets to the nitty gritty; not showering for days, forgetting to brush your teeth, not combing your hair, having a messy room and no clean clothes bc you don't have the motivation to get them cleaned. They tell you to toughen up and "just quit being sad" but then you're happy or acting happy those same people will criticize you for being happy? Of course not everyone is like this and people are becoming more acceptable but there is still a lot of unnesassary criticism towards strangers and loved ones for being open about their mental illnesses.

@cassied.67313 жыл бұрын
While this is true for mental health issues, it's also true for physical health issues as well, and it's sure common for the two to go hand in hand. I literally don't have the energy to shower most of the time, and even though I have a few things I do to keep my hygiene decent it's really not the same. When my mental health gets worse time between my showers starts getting longer and longer, and I stop doing a lot of the things I do to manage my hygiene in other ways. When people can't manage their hygiene, it's not something that should be joked about or laughed at. There's generally a pretty good reason for why they can't keep up with their hygiene, and a little kindness and understanding can go a very long way.
@sillyberry50503 жыл бұрын
This is the best example of the phenomenon of people romanticizing depression and mental health issues until they realize what depression can actually do to a person. When they realize its not just crying all the time and that it can really fuck up your hygiene, i.e not showering, not brushing your teeth or hair, not cleaning your room, not eating, overeating, not doing any school/house/office work, it's suddenly this horrible disgusting thing because it's not 'normal' or they cant emphasize with it. It's truly disheartening.
@Meee8533 жыл бұрын
just as frustrating as that is, is when people lie and claim you are not showering, brushing teeth, cleaning your home or living a regular life and claiming you are depressed just because you are more introverted. This happened to me and is not only irritating because its a lie, but it takes the attention off of real important people like you going through mental health struggles who need that support.
@KatKit523 жыл бұрын
I'd like to point out that a lot of mental health "advocates" don't really.... like the more unseemly parts of mental health. Like, they'll support someone with depression who's crying, but if they're confronted with someone who's depression makes them not able to shower, they'll react with disgust. Or if someone has a panic attack where they start hyperventilating and curl up in a ball, they'll recognize that as a "real" panic attack, but someone who lashes out angrily will be treated as an irredeemable villain. Even though in all those examples, those are common symptoms of each disorder, only the stereotypical parts are considered valid or worthy of support.

yeah also they only care about one partcular type of depressed people, the ones that are depressed but internally, while not showing anything to others and being silent about their struggles. Don't get me wrong, those type of depressed people are valid, but not every people with mental health struggles is like that. Some are outspoken, some hide it their whole life, some can't shower everyday, some can, some are "relatable", some aren't. Deep down, they are mad at her not because she's "trying to hard to be relatable", but because she's not relatable all the time the way they expect her to be, the shower thing for exemple is not what i'll call "relatable" and they jumped on her for that. I think we should collectively start to understand that mental illness express itself in a lot of different ways and we should respect it wether we understand it or not. also, even if it's not exactly the subject, i'm getting tired of people who says they advocate for mental health, but only care about depression and then make fun of autistic people, call people with adhd "lazy", like they think your struggles don't matter until that become litterally depression. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the criticisms and accusations that "Emma is faking" her mental health struggles are coming from people who glorify celebrities etc./have aspirations to be a popular creator. I think when you're going through a difficult time, it's easy to look at someone who has money, fame, etc. and say "if I had all of that then I would be happy." The realization that no amount of money or success is going to cure your mental health or truly make you happy is a difficult one to come to, which might explain why people look at Emma and say "she has to be faking because she has everything I want, so she should be happy."

But I’ve detailed a few below in case you wanna know and I’d be happy to answer any questions. Thanks your nice comment. I’m actually doing rather good lately. It’s a rollercoaster. I’m going to probably crash down again but that’s okay because it genuinely does always get better after a few days/weeks/ months. So, PMDD is premenstrual dysphoric disorder. It’s an extreme version of PMS. It’s..the worst of the worst. I have never experienced such a dreadful existence since I developed PMDD. Literally the second I would wake up before my eyes even opened, I’d be crushed by the worst most dreadful depression and anxiety. I would be crying in my sleep. I had such dark nightmares. I walked around all day (I’m not being dramatic. All day) crying. I’d be having full conversations about our pool or kombucha, just sobbing. It’s the most dreadful condition that I wish on no one. The first time it happened was the first time I ever considered taking my own life because I feared it would last forever. I find this important to talk about because apparently many women have taken their lives thinking it would last forever. Yes, symptoms get worse and it happens every month but there’s a lot of life in between that week or two of horror and dread, that can be beautiful and worth it. PCOS is polycystic ovarian syndrome. It means I have cysts on my ovaries and it’s probably the root cause for much of my hormonal imbalances and causes a lot of the mental health issues I have. Misophonia is also known as selective sound sensitivity. It’s a form of OCD. It’s basically like I have super sonic hearing and certain noises, for whatever freaky annoying ass reason, trigger a fight or flight response in me, and can cause a rage response. It makes..literally no sense and I can’t help but wonder how on a evolutionary aspect this even came about. How an animal can hear certain non threatening sounds and immediately have a biochemical response resulting in fight or flight. It must’ve been some sort of flaw that developed. It’s a bizarre condition. Let’s say I’m in a restaurant with blaring music and 20 people all talking loudly. One guy across the room lightly scrapes his fork against his knife. Not only can I hear it (and it’s overwhelmingly loud) but it induces rage in me and I panic. I have to make the sound stop or flee. And that rage it causes typically lasts quite a while and I end up having to shake my hands or otherwise stim to get it out. Trichotillomania is also known to stem from OCD and anxiety. It’s the compulsion to pull your hair out. My hair is super short solely because I yanked so much out that it had to be buzzed. I used to pull out my eyelashes and eyebrows. This actually started as a baby and that’s unheard of in the medical community. Doctors and psychiatrists are all super fascinated by the idea of me having this as a baby. There’s tons of pictures of me pulling my hair out as a 12-18 month old and on. As of now all the doctors and psychiatrists involved know of no other individual who has presented with trichotillomania as a baby.

The whole shower "criticism" is such bullshit. People who are struggling with their mental health (whether they have mental illness(s) or are just dealing with a lot of shit in life) can have a really hard time doing simple everyday tasks, and shaming them for not showering does far more harm than good. Saying they're gross or nasty will make it worse. And even if Emma doesn't see you saying those things about her (though she's clearly aware of people saying these things), other people will, people you know. People who may be struggling themselves. So not only are you being unnecessarily judgmental towards a celebrity/influencer, but you're also telling other people, possibly your friends, that you're judgmental of and disgusted by their struggles. This is why people struggling with mental health don't feel comfortable talking about it. Because everyone's an "advocate" for mental health until you start talking about your struggles and how they make you "gross"

I genuinely don't even talk about my showering to people anymore, like when people just ask how many times I shower out of curiosity, I always tell a lie. I can't even be bothered defending my mental health or trying to make people understand that sometimes I just cannot get into the shower for like 2 weeks. None of them could ever guess how hard it is sometimes and yet no one has noticed whenever I haven't showered in a bit. People need to realize that you can clean yourself up in other ways. There is wash cloths you can use for your armpits to get rid of sweat and stuff like deodorant exists too. Washing hair can happen without a full shower too. So people really shouldn't associate not showering for a few days with being dirty as there are many ways to keep at least a little clean..

@@kimle2650 same honestly. Like some people make a huge deal out of it I’ve seen and I wonder why cause it’s not a huge issue. My bf knows I don’t shower for about ~4-5 days at a time usually and he’s chill cause I use wipes for my body and also use deodorant and perfume. No one can tell the difference between if I shower everyday vs if I shower once a week. I’m fact, I’m told I smell good sometimes 😅 so people really need to get a grip. The worst part about the guy with the camera chasing her down is that if she were tell the dude to go away and leave her alone, she'll be criticized to hell and back, with clickbait headlines of how rude she is to her fans. Despite that clip showing at the very beginning her stopping to take pictures with her true fans. The paparazzi culture has always been toxic - look at what it did to Britney Spears - but I think that it's gotten even worse now that any random person can pick up a camera and hang near an influence/KZbinr lives just to get a chance to get the "exclusive" stories about that person's life. It is raw and warm and comforting to see small little daily struggles and the realness of life. She gets sentimental about old times but you can tell she knows it’s not her anymore, and it’s somber and that’s okay. I feel the same way about myself looking back to high school. "Broken" is never a word you should use when concerning mental health. When someone is depressed they beat themselves up enough about it, you "confirming" it for them will just send them into deeper despair. They'll start to truly believe that they can't be saved when that simply isn't true. Everyone grows and changes. Some go through a lot of shit along the way. And they struggle. But that doesn't make them weak or broken. Emotionally fragile? Maybe. But they are stronger than the people who call them "broken" will ever know. Because they've gone through what they have and lived, they're still here. I hope everyone out there keeps fighting. Don't let those assholes tell you what/who you are. You can get help, you can manage, you can be and are strong. Slipping up is not the end of the world. It's all a process. Keep going.

When someone is going through a Panic Attack right in front of them, they usually shut down and suddenly mock the person going through a crisis, sometimes treating them with pity and having „superiority complexes“. I have people told me „I need to calm down“, but they don’t realize that this does nothing when I am going through a crisis. I need space and I told them this often. But then when I tell them i need space, they respond with a passive aggressive „what was the point of me coming anyways“ as if only their time is precious and I am wasting their time. It’s disheartening. I’m glad Emma spoke about this topic
