So a 1x9 is only a nine speed? Surprised to see bikes with so few speeds nowadays. Also, I am kind of surprised that if the front derailleur is no more, something like the old school chain guards wasn't added to try and keep the chain on. I'm thinking of the single speed bike I had in my childhood and half century old Schwinns that my mom and dad still have (3 speed and 5 speed)

I think the old school chain guards were intended to keep things from falling into the chain and pants and legs from getting greasy.
